Official Halo Wars Discussion: Demo Drops Tomorrow (2/5/2009) - Page 4

I played the as the convenant during the tutorial (demo)
But playing a skirmish (demo) I loved the UNSC. Between rushing, building no looking like a squashed elephant and the ability to store up mac rounds to help your troops as they invade the base is awesome.
I've got my copy of LCE pre-ordered on amazon.ca, hopefully they will ship today

I got mine for 54.11 at costco. The Concord store has 15 more copies. It was not on display, but when I asked, they found one for me. Yeah!!!! Anyone for campaign co op? None of my friends seem to be getting the game.

This is a very fun game. As long as you play with people who want to play. I wish there was an option like in command & conquer where you can make it where people have to wait sometime before people can attack. Its so dumb when I am building up my base and some ****** sends over little nothings and destroys everything before I can even finish my power place.. But besides that I played some good games and do like it.

How is play against the AI?

I assume you mean the skirimish mode?
I've only played the demo skirmish mode which I dominated in on my second play.

I consider myself a bit of a veteran (experinced) of RTS's both real time and turn based, console and pc.

And I find this the most fun out of the box and most easy to manage things.

I find in campieng if I play a tight game that I'll win eveuntally, but there have been stints of time where I didn't know if I'd win or not.
I'm just finished act 2 and I think I'm on level 9 and thoroughly enjoy it.

It one of the fastest paced RTS's I've played in the ability to get things done.
But I don't mean the game play is fast paced. What I mean is it easy to jump back to the base "order/build" more troops jump back to the battle zone, jump back to base, deploy troops to the front.

I find missions so far are generaly 30m-1h10
I like to take my time so I can get a k/d ratio and get extra points, throught I then don't gain as many points for speed.

One thing that I would like to add for begginners: Save frequently (and on separate game saves if possible). The main 'problem' with RTS games is that one can spend an hour or longer on a mission, just to end up loosing at the end. This can be quite frustrating and especially true on the harder difficulties. Many missions are time based (i.e. get an objective done before the timer runs down), and the risk of not building the correct army, the risk of turtling (as the AI will have more powerful units), improper base management will make a significant difference in the end game. As a result, especially when you accomplish a task successfully, gamesave, that way if you make a mistake in tactics, rather than re-starting froms scratch, just load the save point that you want. It will save a lot of frustration and grief (I remember this from CC games, as the game can get pretty hard on the gold difficulties).

I think you only get one save slot in this game.

Yeah I think it's one save per pofile, I tried to figure out last night how to have multiple saves.

I also want to add the difficutly JUMPS up.

I went from going through missions enjoying them doing well to getting slautered last night and failing my first mission (it was a count down timer)

Granted, I've only finished the first act and started to move onto the second, but the "gimmicks" are a staple of RTS games. Sometimes you have stages where you have to work with the initial load of trips you are given and can't build an army, or you have certain tasks that must be completed. Is Halo Wars your first RTS game, console or PC based? It's just a Halo Wars thing.

The only "gimmick" I ever really hated in these games is the countdown levels. I suppose I'm just too damn slow-paced for these levels, but I never have fun with them.

lol, i put my mythic map pack code up for $40 and it sold in less than an hour.

so my collectors edition cost me $27, and i'll wait a week or two and throw down $10 on the mythic pack.

The gimicky levels too me

were rescueing troops you can't control, fighting a scareb head
and running around on top of a ship 2x.

and gimicky to is when you not only beat, but do great on a level with only two types of attack units, or even one. Which I've done a lot.
On barracks
X supply Pads
Maybe one reactor.

I just want build a base and go to war for 30 minutes
I've got 3 levels left and feel like I've only really fought one good "big battle" and it was against the flood of all people.

I played skirmish game last night on AUTO AI I went to do a small battle at there base to rattle them and stop them from attacking me and I won the whole game.

I'm moving this game from a buy to rent, I'm going to try and unload my copy.

Up the difficulty of the skirmish mode to Legandary or play skirmish again. It will automatically scale up the next time you play. The more you play and succeed the better the A.I. will get. It starts off a lower pace so it does not scare off people new to the RTS genre.
I wasn't all that crazy about the campaign. But I really enjoy the skirmish mode with the auto-scaling difficulty. I don't yet have a good feel for how the AI thinks (and thus how to take advantage of it). It seems to use significantly different strategies from game to game. Sometimes I get rushed with quick hoards of cheap units. The last game I played I rushed the AI with warthogs (cheap vehicles), and found he had built a half dozen Gremlins (special anti-vehicle vehicles) and one Vulture (an uber-unit). Yes, good players will note that there is no way a Vulture should be built by the time a rush arrives, but keep in mind I kind of suck).

I had one AI player who had built TWO vultures and quickly sent out a rush. This was also one of the times my AI teammate decided he didn't want to offer any protection like sometimes happened.

Yesterday I had the A.I. do a rush on me early with a couple of brutes and a hero. After I had survived that my A.I. buddy and I wiped out the other A.I. base. While we were doing that the other A.I. had snuck an army back to our bases and killed one the A.I.'s bases and set up shop right next to me without me noticing. When I finally did notice it and kill it they again came back and setup shop again while I was trying to get them. Clearly this was my fault, but it was fun nonetheless.

I can't remember which map it was off the top of my head, but it was the 2x2 map with the sentinel "store" in the center. That map is FULL of base opportunities, so after my AI teammate was eliminated, every time I cleared a base, I had to build another to prevent one of the two adversary AIs from building. I think I had 7 or 8 bases at one time. Quite a chore to track where my factories were. Most bases ended up just being supply pads. But that was one of the more fun skirmish missions I had. I was quite close to building a second scarab.

Anybody got a good defense against a warthog rush in the first 3 min if playing as the UNSC? I've had it happen on live so much it drives me crazy. Even on 3v3 when it happens it's frustrating as heck!:

That scarab head was laughing as I replayed the mission over and over again. Big army or small, it didn't make a difference. Perhaps I watch the blinking lights too much.

Anyway, while waiting for the charge from the mothership to finish I noticed that the scarab head had glitched or stuck in one spot. There is a sniper tower just north of the base that I took over and stocked with marines. for some reason, the scarab kept shooting at it without inflicting any damage or moving away in any direction. SCORE for me!

Maybe it was just trying to give me a break.

For most RTS games, the real fun is in multiplayer. Most people enjoy the campaign mainly for the cutscenes, as the stories tend to be pretty good (and I personnaly liked the story of Halo Wars). However the strategy per campaign level essentially is the same, apart from minor differences for difficulty. Even with the king of RTS games (Startcraft), the campaign ended up being boring, as it was level after level of the same thing, and at the end, I ended up using cheats to speed up finishing the campaign (there were 60 chapters when you included the brood war expansion) ibn order to get he whole story. Same thing can be said about Halo Wars (15 chapters 'only') in that the campaign becomes repetitious but then there is enough challenge in them to re-play (getting skulls, black boxes, gold medals, and legendary difficulty). The 2 player co-op is actually a really neat feature, as most RTS campaigns do not have multiplayer for the campaign.

You have to play multiplayer, and 3v3 is pretty fun especially if you play with people of similar skill. It becomes frustrating initially, especially when playing against RTS 'pro's', but practicing against heroic and legendary AI in skirmish first will definately help.

I like this game a lot but when people rush in 2 seconds its sooooooo annoying and pointless. Command and conquer is better in all ways. Seige mode would have topped this game off. Its ok...
