Pioneer To End TV Production

Thread Starter
I just saw this story on the Dow Jones newswire and almost did a spit take while eating lunch. This is horrible news. I planned on getting a Kuro this summer and now I may have to push the date forward.

02/06 12:12P (DJ) DJ Pioneer To End TV Production, Spin Off DVD
Development-Nikkei
Story 6368 (6752.TO, 6753.TO, 6773.TO, PC, SHCAY, JP3359600008...)
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Pioneer Corp. (6773.TO) will pull the plug on its
loss-ridden television business and shift its DVD player operations to a new
venture with Sharp Corp. (6753.TO) in a sweeping overhaul, The Nikkei reported
in its Thursday morning edition.
The company had been planning to end in-house production of plasma panels by
the end of March and outfit its TVs with Panasonic Corp. (6752.TO) panels
instead. Faced with worsening profit margins, however, it has decided to end
TV development and production altogether.
Pioneer will idle its lone domestic TV factory in Shizuoka Prefecture
sometime this year. Factories in the U.S. and Europe are already slated for
closure.
Sales of Pioneer TVs will continue for the time being. The company has not
yet decided what to do when inventories run out.
Meanwhile, Pioneer will spin off its DVD player operations, which are
equally steeped in losses, to a new company to be set up with Sharp as early
as this spring.
The company plans to eliminate several thousand of its roughly 40,000
groupwide jobs in the year ending March 2010. Pioneer is likely to post a
consolidated net loss of more than Y100 billion for the year ending this
March, wider than the Y78 billion loss it forecast earlier.

My quest for the Perfect Tv just got set back by years with this news.

Maybe Pioneer will sell its ECC tech to panny and it will go forward.

I would say you are correct, get it while you can...

My wife had actually heard on the National news yesterday that Pioneer was going to lay off 15,000 employees..
So I guess it all makes sense now..

Ouch

this is very bad news

I do not think, IT IS END OF WORLD! Cmon Pioneer say Ola to LCD world, bye bye PLASMA! Pioneer know their niche!
Well, it is sad news but quite frankly no surprise. The writing was on the wall. As I and a couple others mentioned, losses over the last 4/5 years along with the current worldwide economic crisis left them no choice.
And as I mentioned, it makes more sense for them to continue in other profitable business groups.

This is not the end for plasma. Samsung, Panasonic, and LG will continue development in that area so plasma fans need not despair.

ECC is still expensive. However, Panasonic could create a higher than current tire display bracket and bring them to market. If the world economy is still in the toilet, you can forget about it happening next year.

The fact is that the days of paying $5000+ for a television set are behind us. The novelty of flat panel receivers and HDTV has worn off and now consumers want televisions that are priced like, well, televisions.

Personally, I am tired of the elitism (pun intended) associated with the Pioneer brand on this message board and am not entirely sad to see Pioneer go. And good riddance to the highly reflective piano black bezels brought to us by Pioneer!

Dang. I was hoping to purchase a Pioneer for my next HD set in a year or so. You could kind of see the writing on the wall with the moves Pioneer made last year combined with the global economic crash, but still. As mentioned above, hopefully Panasonic will keep their tech alive and moving forward.

Edit: I see most of my thoughts have been mentioned above. Oh well.

Don't worry, goverment will start a coupon bailout program for TV industry: let say $1000 for a new green TV (not really green, but probably green color)

That's not what I've been told. Are you speaking to Pioneer NA or japan?
Yes, I heard this weeks ago from my friend who has been selling TVs for decades. He said Pioneer was closing it's plasma division this year and that Kuro would spin off as it's own brand. Since Panasonic has been supplying the panels for Pioneer for some time now, it appears that they will continue to be the top plasma manufacturer for the foreseeable future. Just not sure if that "Kuro only" company is for real or not. We'll all know in a short time.
