Cleaning Elite Screen HELP!!!!!

Thread Starter
my daughter (shes 2) got milk on my 111fd elite screen when she dropped her cup. i tried cleaning it off with the cloth the tv came with but left really bad streaks.

I then wen to BB and they suggested the monster cleaner.

Used that and now have streaks / residue coating all over the screen and looks terrible.

What can I do? I've never had a TV this hard to clean.

First of all...resist physical violence against the Best Buy employees. (can you send me a PM telling me which Best Buy this was...I'd like to call them about this)

The anti-glar/anti-reflective coating is on the outside of the glass. Monster Screen Cleaner can damage it. Distilled water should be used with the cloth provided if it doesn't work dry. I'll allow someone else to confirm this, but I fear the worst...

I dont think you can fix that! Go back to that best buy and have a talk with them. Only soft cloth and distilled water (if necessary) to be used!
Ouch, man. Yeah, try some distilled water (in SMALL doses), and then dry it gently with the cloth.

And speaking of the cloth, where is a good place to restock? Will the standard microfiber cloths at the chain stores work fine? My Elite was filthly and the factory cloth is pretty nasty looking now. I want to pick up a few fresh extras.

Thanks!

can the anti glared be re applied? I think i may have smeared it which explains the thick film like substance that streaked all over the screen.

Get yourself a good homeowners policy.....turn the TV around.......wait for your daughter to finish the job with a full glass of milk all inside it......Damn.

Man I feel for you.

I hate to have to tell you, but I dont think it can be.

Your best bet if you want to try and do something yourself short term. Is to try the micro fiber with just a hint of distilled water on it...in a small spot, try it and see what that looks like. The BB people really screwed you here. The alcohol in that screen clean crap smeared the filter.
Just stop and speak with Best Buy first before you do anything that could cause further damage. I agree with these suggestions, but not until you have spoken with the manager at that location.
The milk likely didn't do anything...but the Monster probably did...

Yuk.

before i get too ahead of myself,

is there a way to tell if I actually damaged the screen?

would i know if the filter was removed?

out of some advice on the monster board I was told you have to buff the streaks out. I've done this by putting a little more elbow grease into it and it does appear smooth again.

I'm just wondering if i did remove the coating or does the monster screen cleaner really just needed to be buffed out.

Anyone with a Kuro needs this http://www.photodon.com/c/MF.html the Orange Microfiber cloth is way better than the one that's included with the TV. I have a two year old and had fingerprints all over my screen with a little Distilled water it works great.

I'm not saying the Monster Cleaner is a good thing to use but I am saying that there is NO ALCOHOL in it.
If something is in the Monster Cleaner that's bad for Elite screen, it's not Alcohol that's the culprit.

I happen to work at a certain electronics retailer that sells both Kuros and Monster screen cleaner...

I can tell you two things with absolute certainty:

1) That cleaner is of no use on a Pioneer plasma
2) That cleaner is fantastic at cleaning LCD screens

(so, once you get your streaky screen issues resolved, you might as well hang on to the cleaner for cleaning any LCDs you may have around the house...)

Test it on a blank CD before using it on the plasma. Also, don't apply too much force while using it.

If you actually removed it, I doubt it would have come out looking smooth ever again.
Since it looks ok now, odds are it's fine.

I wouldn't doubt hundreds of people who do not read AVS have used Monster cleaner at least once, probably some who do and just won't admit they made this mistake.

I can almost guarantee you that the Monstor cleaner did not harm your AR coating in any way. Just use a microfiber and distilled water from now on and you'll be fine.
this is a tad off subject but i work at lenscrafters and i use alcohol and the lc brand eyeglass cleaner on a daily basis on our ar coated lenses and never once has it left permanent streaks

now im not recommending using that stuff on your tv because im not even sure there is any similarities in the tv coating and the lens coating, just giving a little info
post #19 of 31
The best cleaner for any screen is distilled water and a microfiber towel, as mentioned before in the thread. Those lcd cleaning kits are a waste of money. Aside from that, the coating on the pioneers makes them harder to clean. You probably got the streaking because you cleaned the screen when it was still warm or in use. The screen needs to be off and cool before you clean it.

I agree completely. BB employees are about as well qualified as the employees at your local McDonald's. When I bought my KURO (not at BB) they gave me free can of Monster Screen Cleaner. I never used it. Maybe someday I will find some other application for it! The Pioneer sets have a very special anti-glare coating that must be treated with great care, and you should only use the supplied cloth.

Just check the Pioneer (5020/6020/150/151) threads...it's a known fact that this cleaner will damage the film on the outside of the screen.
yes ouch.. interesting that they recommended that cleaner..

You can get the oem cloth from Pioneer, but it's $22 with shipping..

+1

I use that cleaner on all of my LCD screens and it works beautifully. It's never come near my Kuro though. Microfiber and distilled water only.

You got ahead of yourself when you did all the wrong things to your screen before coming here to seek out info.

The coating is very fragile and easy to damage. Never ever use elbow grease on a Pioneer screen - the special coating does not like too much pressure.

Here's a few threads that go into detail about cleaning the screen, and maybe a solution to get your screen clean the right way:

I use the Monster Screen Clean all the time on my Panasonic Plasma and it works great. I don't need to use a lot, just a light mist all over and it cleans right up easily. No streaks, no damage. Pioneer on the other hand seems to be different, but it says SAFE for ALL Plasma's and LCD's right on the bottle. If you say it damaged your screen, I say call MONSTER up and have THEM do something about it!!!
If you'll PM me I'll give you my address. You can send me your Elite for cleaning. Takes about a month.

on your panny you are applying it to the glass surface.

The Pioneer plasmas have a bonded color filter on the outside of the glass surface and extra care needs to be taken when trying to clean it.

and monster needs to relabel their product.

What other stereotypes do you have brewing inside you?

Its rather unusual to have a color filter coating outside of the glass surface - this would obviously needs extra care to clean - does the pioneer manual specify anywhere on the recommended cleaning? A quick scan didnt really specify anything.

(they did provide a micro fiber cloth with set but its so tiny - we live in building where dust gets into home a lot; for our previous CRT TV's glass surface - cleaning was easy just wipe it with clorox wipes)

yes unusual but hey it gets the best pic......

just take a flashlight and inspect it closely or very lightly touch it (clean finger and to the side if you must, lol) and you will see/feel it's the bonded color filter and not a glass surface.

best if it is just dust to lightly brush away any dust you see with a clean microfiber cloth or clean duster that does not use any kind of treatment on it. If you do have an area of the screen that really needs cleaning I would only do as others mentioned, using distilled water and a good quality microfiber cloth like from photdon.com and applied lightly and may need a little rubbing out to even out the area.
