Reference
Onkyo: CS-5VL SACD Player
Cary: Concept CPA-1 Preamp
Cary: Concept CAA-1 ICE 200ASC Amp
Newform Research: R630 (Ver 1) ribbon array + Scanspeak hybrid floorstanders (custom painted Suzuki Metallic White)
Stereo Interconnects: Belden 9116S + Canare RCA
Balanced Interconnects: Canare L-2T2S + Neutrik XLR
Speaker Cables: Cat-6 4 Braided Wires + Cardas bananas
Power Regenerator: PS Audio P300 (the original)

Note: At the total cost of $4700 all equipments bought brand new, I think it'd be extremely hard to find a more transparent system at any price. The old Newforms perform even better than the brand new Usher Be-718's so those got downgraded to the HT system. All of the interconnects are custom made to the shortest length possible. Everything is kept to the minimum and unnecessary aesthetic costs are ignored. Granted the P300 and the R630's are about 10 years old and they were hella cheap back then. But the fact that they perform better than newer stuff is amazing. The Onkyo's CS4398 seems to be the best match for the transparency and the openness that the ribbons excel for but that's just my taste, others I assume would prefer the more analogue Burr Brown. Someone said that the Onkyo A9755 sounds better than the ICE stuff but I found the Cary preamp to be superior. The next upgrades will be replacing the old Newforms with their newer oval ribbon stuff and demoting the Cary's with a class d fanboy's dream the NAD M2.

Living Room Home Theater
LG: 47LG53FR LCD 47" LCD, on stand
Sony: DV-C700ES SACD/DVD Changer + 6.1 Pro-Master Class D Receiver
Panasonic: SA-XR57S 7.1 Class D Receiver (the cult classic), dual amp mode on
Philips: DVP5996K DVD Player + SACD Transport
Usher: Be-718, Fronts
Onkyo: SKC-L500, Slim Center
Onkyo: L-107 Powered Slim Subwoofer
HDMI: standard cable with 2 ferrites on each end, DVD to receiver, 1m
Digital Coax: Daiyo, DVD to receiver, 1m
Video Cable: Monster Cable - M Video composite set HDTV to receiver, 0.75m
Video Cable: Monster Cable - M Video2 RCA Video, HDTV to receiver, 1m
Stereo Interconnects: Profigold Stereo RCA cable, HDTV to receiver, 1m
Mono Interconnect: Daiyo Mono RCA cable, receiver to subwoofer, 3m
Speaker Cables: Analysis Plus - Oval 9 14 gauge Speaker cables (white jacket) to fronts, 2.5m
Speaker Cables: Monster Cable - XPH White 10 gauge Speaker cables (white jacket) to CC+SS, 6m
Monster Power: HT850, Surge protector + noise filter
Stabilizer: Kenmaster Voltage convertor for 110V equipments

Note: Clean and minimalist, not by design but by requirement due to the room being the echo hell that it is. That's not surprising given the large glass door panels at the sides and the empty room. I tried upgrading the receiver and the speakers to no avail. It just happens that the all purpose Sony Class D receiver sounds best due to emphasis on treble. It's just the room that needs treatment but HT isn't much of a priority. The DVD player is capable of outputting DSD through HDMI but the old receiver doesn't have HDMI. It already has a SACD changer built-in though I'm fairly certain it converts to analog first. The changer in the Sony is useful as backup as some DVD's won't play well on the Philips. I had the Newform Research R630 as fronts but its characters are better suited for my bedroom and the wife agrees so they're swapped with the Ushers. Same with the Analysis Plus cable, just because it has a white jacket. Btw, the house itself already has a huge voltage regulator installed so I wonder if the surge protector does anything at all even for filtering noise. The most interesting thing about this setup is I have to use a HDMI cable with 2 ferrites for the 1080p to work. It's not a faulty cable so it must be a really noisy environment.

Home PC
Sound Blaster: X-Fi Xtreme Audio, 44.1/16 out to receiver
DVD Player: LG DVD+CD Player, ripper, burner
LCD Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 943bwx 19" minimalist LCD with DVI
Onkyo: A-5VL VL Class D Integrated Amp with digital coax input
PSB: Alpha B1 Bookshelf Fronts, custom painted Metallic Merlot
Earphones: Audio Technica - C602, 1.5m
Speaker Stands: Lovan, Full metal 75cm
Digital Coax: Canare LV-61S + Nakamichi RCA, 1m
Speaker Cables: Monster Cable XPH White 16 gauge + Straight Wire bananas, 0.5m
UPS: standard 500W

Note: I wanted a PC system that can accept digital out from the soundcard but slim enough to be on the desk while maintaning high SQ. The Onkyo Class D is just perfect for the task. Certainly not for critical listening but pairing it with the efficient PSB's makes some really accurate sounding FLAC playback and the kid's games. When I used the inefficient Usher S-520's it was a different story. The output sample is kept at 44.1 since it has the fullest sound but the bit rate which doesn't make any difference IMO is upped to 24 bit. The choice of the thin white speaker cables is for aesthetic purpose only. Though I'm tempted to use my DIY Cat-6 wires... naah.

Kid's Bedroom
NAD: C545BEE CD Player
Sound Blaster: X-Fi Xtreme Audio, 44.1/16 out to receiver
Onkyo: A9755 VL Class D Integrated Amp
Usher: S-520 Bookshelf Fronts, piano white
Interconnects: custom Avantgarde double shield Analysis Plus oval style + Nakamichi connectors, 0.75m
Speaker Cables: Monster Cable - XPHP Clear Jacket 12 gauge, 0.5m

Note: This system has now become a full blown audiophile worthy setup since I've added the NAD player. The NAD would've been the perfect sounding player if it weren't for the lack of top end sparkle and real edge. This is particularly noticeable on sax where it detracts from the realism of the real thing. Very analogue and clean sounding though. Anyway, can't complain much about a $335 player. I usually kept the grill off on the Ushers for the better look but who knows what a little kid would do to the drivers and the bass port. The 12 gauge speaker cable is overkill and at that length I don't think it makes any difference but it certainly looks cool. Anyway I get true audiophile sound for $1400.

Office Room 1
Sound Blaster: X-Fi Xtreme Audio, 44.1/16 out to receiver
DVD Player: Samsung DVD+CD Player, ripper, burner
LCD Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 943bwx 19" minimalist LCD with DVI
Onkyo: TX-L55 6.1 slim Receiver, non-VL Class D amp, direct mode on
JMLab: Chorus 806V, Bookshelf Fronts
Speaker Stands: Usher-like wood, standard speaker stands
Digital Coax: custom Canare Space Chllenger + Nakamichi bananas, PC to receiver, 6m
Speaker Cables: custom Cat-5 4 Wires + Nakamichi bananas (12 gauge Speaker cables), 1.2m
Stabilizer: Okachi - voltage convertor for 110V equipments

Note: I wanted to add the Onkyo A9755 integrated to the Panny but it looks too bulky in the room. It is an office afterall and the Focals are already impressive enough both in style and size. I mainly use this to play the radio or FLAC from the PC as background music but when required this setup doesn't sound embarassing. Could've been perfect with the A9755 though. Sample rate is set the same as the home PC, 44.1/16bit. The setting at 24 bit seems to lose quite a bit of body.

Office Room 2
Onkyo: CS-715 CD Mini System, VL Class D amp, direct mode on
Onkyo: SKF-L500, Slim Fronts
Stabilizer: digital type 1000W

Note: This is also another system assembled from left over stuff. Still looks highly impressive in an office and the sound is definitely superior to more expensive mini systems.

Notice all the amps in the setups are Class D down to the mini system? I'm basically a fanatic of Class D stuff. The only linear amps I own are the Mark Levinson tuned LG FB163 mini system in my other office room and the Marantz SR4002 receiver that's collecting dust. My kitchen mini system is an old Philips Class D as well. Also, you're probably wondering what the hell am I doing with all the Monster stuff. Well they're mostly there for aesthetics for the "uninformed" and to make use of leftover stuff that I've got since the 90's. I still have a box full of funky cables in storage. Nowadays I just custom made all my cables. Cheaper better prettier.

I haven't posted some pics yet due to time constraints. Will update...

LG 47". There's no point spending any more until the 50" ones become a lot cheaper which I'm hoping would be sometime this year.

Looks really nice and simple. Great loungy look.

Hi Veda,

I've gotta say, your setup looks unbelievably clean and sweet with nicely matched gear. I have heard only good things about the Newforms everyone who owns them loves them. Quick question - how is the treble, did you notice any treble distortion whatsoever with them?

Excellent job! (And great photography skills!!!)

Looking forward for your reference listening setup - if I remember correctly that will include an integrated amp?

Thanks for posting those pics, I really love the simplicity and modern look of your house!!

Regards,
Dan

ddgtr, thanks! The Newforms are still probably the best speakers I've ever owned. My wife even thinks it's better than the 806V and Be-718. She was also the one who personally oversaw and painted the speakers at her auto workshop. So I'm contemplating of moving them to my reference setup, thus the delay in taking the pics. Plus that setup is also in my bedroom so I'm still thinking about the best clearest shot without revealing too much *LOL*.

As for the treble of the R630, yes I've read about the distortion since back in the 90's. But as far as critical listening the only flaw I could find is the slightly noticeable "gap" where the tweeter crosses with the slower woofer. Otherwise, it's among the very best I've ever heard when it comes to soundstage and detail. Thus my reason for personally hauling them air cargo halfway around the world. Anyway I'm definitely going to get a new Newform in the future.

My reference setup now consist of Cary Concept ICE 200ASC based separates instead of the cheap but incredible Onkyo A-9755. As for the house itself, believe it or not it's only been 3 years since it was completed but I'm already looking for a new land for a new smaller house. The reason: too much echo, there's no room for critical listening! Ack!

A mood lamp I got at the mall. It was intended to be a night light for under the stairs and we chose blue to fit the mood. It turns out to be a perfect match with the aqua frosted glass panel. It reminds me of a club.

At a specialized furniture store that imports all their items from Italy. I thought since it was at 50% discount and I get to choose the leather and stitching colors, it sounded like a good deal. Took 3 months to arrive since it's custom but even at 50% that single rack is more than my Usher Be-718. Thinking back I should've gotten a chinese made one since they've copied european designs, so I can spend the $ more audio.

Couldn't disagree more. That room is perfect in every aspect. I cannot imagine better furniture choices.

Super system, and very organized/clean...

Hello Veda!

You have a very sweet setup. Clean and efficient. Your room is so nice that it's time to put your system front and center!

Maybe I missed it in your equipment listing, a fine listing indeed, but I do not see a high def device, such as a Blu ray player. Do you plan to add one in the future?

Regardless, You have a very nice arrangement and your living space is in a word, "Cool!"

Regards.

ldgibson76, indeed I have a list of future component upgrades that will be done within a year or so. On top of the list is the blueray and the Arcam CD player. The LCD in the living room will also be moved to my bedroom and I will get a 53"+ for replacement. Right now I'm focused on trying to make use of the left over components. I'm even thinking of putting the Usher S520 and the Onkyo A9755 in my 5 year old kid's bedroom. I know it's overkill

Very nice.......I love the style as I myself love a clean modern look. I'm loving the Be-718's myself.....the office acoustics, not so much.

For someone who has a mediocre setup, and a closet for an apartment, you sure are judgemental?

You remind of the woman in a show that my fiance' LOVES "Housewives of Orange County", except without the money.

I'm saving for some commissioned paintings. But they cost quite a bit and we're in a global crisis so the walls will have to do bare for now.

Very nice house... not sure if i missed it but i dont see pics of your ushers and other audio equipment you mentioned. I hate those Onkyo speakers.

Just curious, which part of asia are you from?
i must say that is a beautiful looking room
post #29 of 47
Cool looking house! I have to say, given our seeming differences of opinion on speakers, I wasn't expecting such a good-looking set-up!

I was under the impression that you owned Focals given your propensity to praise them, but guess not. Not a criticism, but how does your Newform Research fronts match with your Onkyo center and surrounds? Any reason why you're not going all Newform Research or Onkyo? Seems like NR doesn't make a center, but their philosophy seems to be the wide horizontal dispersion of their ribbon designs negates the need for one.

I wasn't even aware that Onkyo made hi-fi speakers. The design reminds me of 90's B&O, but I guess that's a common speaker design now. Goes well with your room and LCD screen.

I also have large glass window doors next to my set-up. An easy fix is to add some nice, thick curtains. They make a HUGE difference in my room when they are drawn. I have similar hard stone floors in my living room, and just ordered a custom thick, furry rug to place between my front speakers and our leather ottoman in front our sofa that also serves as a "coffee table". It should arrive in another week so very interested to see how it affects that sound. I see you also have a rug in front of your couch, but you do have a lot of reflective floors around and behind it, which is probably not helping with the "echo".

I see you are also in Asia, which country do you live in?

P.S. I noticed you have the Steelcase Leap with headrest chair in your study? Very nice! I was looking at that as well for my study, but ended up getting the Herman Miller Embody.
