YES, another Monster Cable post...this time, with a twist :)

OK, here it goes. I'm not a big poster on this site, but I frequent it often and take a lot of advice found on this site. I went against the grain when I opted to get some Monster M1000 HDMI cables. I know a lot of you have this disdain towards Monster, so before the attacks come, hear me out

I was at Circuit City earlier this week to see if I could find a good deal on some HDMI cables since they were going out of business. Boy was I wrong; no good deals there...as far as I was concerned anyways. But while I was there, I was speaking to a sales rep and he told me about how great Monster products are...blah blah blah. But in speaking to him, he brings up Monster's "Cable for Life" Guarantee. He says if any new technology were to come along and the Monster Cable was not able to handle it, Monster would replace it for free with a cable that can support that new technology. So I asked what any person would ask...like what? He started telling me about 1440p and the possibility to go beyond that. So I started thinking about it, what if I were to get a low cost cable and then have to replace it a couple years down the line? That would suck to have to buy another set of cables right?

But there is the upfront cost to consider.

They had the 2 meter 1000HD (none M) cables "on sale" for $81.59. So just like that, I booked. I wasn't prepared to spend $352, after tax, for 4 HDMI cables. So I'm convinced that I am just going to get a set of cable from monoprice.com. Before I do that, I check to see how much these monster cables are going for on eBay...HOLY MOLY, I found some M1000HD for cheap, compared to MSRP, and scored 4 for $180 shipped. I know, I know, that's still a lot of money. I could have spent $64.30 shipped at monoprice.com based on their cheapest in stock 24AWG 10ft HDMI cables.

So, this brings me to my questions...Did I make a good decision on buying the Monster Cable brand solely based on their "Cable for Life" Guarantee? Do you think the HDMI 1.3a will stay the standard? Was it worth spending 3 times the amount of money to never have to worry about replacing my cables ever again?

And buy the way, the picture and sound look and sound **better playing a blu-ray movie (Dark Night) from my PS3 on my Sammy LN52A750 running through an Onkyo TX-SR805 to my Monitor Audio Silver RS surround sound speakers.

**I could be tricking myself into thinking "better" because I just spent $180 on cables. So in all fairness, I recognize that I could be seeing/hearing what I want to see/hear to justify spending what I spent

Were you using HDMI before, just replacing existing cables and doing nothing else? If so, then no you are fooling yourself.

Seems like a strange motivation. The only way this pays off is if you are betting that the cables that you bought are fairly lackluster and can't handle what you forsee in the future needing them for, say 1080p60 or something that you aren't using now.

My guess is that since you picked them up on ebay, monster will just say you didn't buy from an authorized dealer if you ever did need to "upgrade" your cables to the next gen whatever....

..sorry, didn't make a monster believer out of me.

Those cables you bought are good cables... just not worth $180 IMO, and definitely not worth $352. Actually, I think it'd be reasonable if they were $180 for all four for an in-store purchase, but they're not.

Personally, I wouldn't even have bothered with 24 AWG Monoprice either. For 2 metres, 28 AWG Monoprice is adequate for 1080p60. Dunno about 1440p, but I don't care. For four 6-foot HDMI 1.3a Category 2 certified cables from Monoprice, it's all of $13.36, plus a few extra bucks for shipping. I'll spend another $25 from Monoprice to get new cables when the time comes for 1440p... perhaps in 2015.

Whether you will ever need to upgrade an HDMI cable depends on whether future signals will require higher frequencies than the cable you have can carry. There has been, (and is unlikely to be) any change to HDMI cables other than higher frequency requirements for the newer HDMI versions. There has been no change to the cable format since HDMI's inception. All cables carry the same signal. For short lengths even the oldest cable will likely carry the latest 1.3a version 2 signals without error.

2 meter cables are short enough that they will probably handle any HDMI frequency needs well into the future. So whether it was worth nearly 3 times the Monoprice cost to buy obsolescence insurance for your cable is problematic.

I hate to be a wet blanket but I think any perceived improvement in the picture is a "what you want to see" effect, if you are comparing one HDMI cable to another. In general HDMI cables either work perfectly or very badly. There is no subtle "slight degradation" when you have errors in a digital signal.

Guess you didn't believe all the other posts in this forum about Monster. Sometimes snake oil is hard to resist.

The only thing the Monster cables have going for them, is that they aren't as rigid. If that is worth the price of admission, then who am I to tell anyone otherwise.

I have/had Monoprice cables, and unfortunately, they are just too rigid for the rack in the LR, which is in a closet. They gave me too many problems with popping out of place when the rack was pushed back, so they were retired to the bedroom where the flexibility is not needed.

I currently have Monster HDMI cables in the LR rack because they offered the flexibility I needed for that particular application. Now, did I pay what most, or even what you paid? No, I didn't but that is another story.

Nice to have friends who work for LARGE retailers.

P.S. I see/hear no difference between the Mono, or Monster cables (because I shouldn't ).

I was using the HDMI cable that came with my XBOX 360 Elite and 3 $3 HDMI cables I got on eBay a couple of years back.

I called Monster Cable customer service and the rep said as long as the cables are authentic, they would replace them. No receipt needed. And these came brand new sealed in the box.

LMAO...I didn't realize that 1440p wasn't going to come out until 2015

Must be nice to be ignorant, with a "Herd" mentallity.

I have no problem paying 15 bucks as opposed to 11 after shipping to get what I need. If that would be considered taking food out of the mouths of your family, then I apologize, and promise to rethink through my future posts.

Not that I think the terminology is appropriate, but I thought he was talking to the original poster.

You can't expect someone from a town of just over 32,000 people to say something that would be considered brilliant. Not to say it's not possible, just not expected

oh, and it's not rape if you let it happen, right?? haha

Yep, the OP asked a question and I answered. Some are just a tad too defensive.

Spending $180 on cables that can be replaced in the future doesn't make a lot of sense when you can get the same cables for $25 - $30. They'd have to be replaced 8 times to make the expense worth it.

See, this is a lot better response than saying "You still got raped". Thank you Stew4msu. I am not being a smart ass, being condescending, or poking fun at you. I really do appreciate your input, as I value everyone's opinion on this forum. I'm just glad this didn't turn into a flame war

So I'm just going to return them, The eBay seller was really cool about it and was OK with me returning them. So, monoprice and BJC cables pretty much the general consensus when it comes to HDMI cables?

Good deal, return those puppies! That is way too much for HDMI cables, which to my understanding are nothing more than cat5 cables after eduamacating myself.

What do they carry signal wise? 1's and 0's, nothing more, nothing less. I buy mine off of Amazon, 3 footers $1.29 and ten footers were around $8. The darn things work fine to my eyes, the picture pops off of the screen just like it does with $100 Manster cable I have.

Yep, and I bought it. I wish I could say it was a gift.

Perhaps you know, but one of these (port savers) might have solved your problems with your HDMI cables coming loose.
I use them on the back of a 8X1 HDMI switcher.

Thanks for the heads up blast. I do in fact use one of them with the HDMI plate. It wouldn't have worked with the rack though. It is hard to explain, you'd really have to see it in person to understand.

Were you trying to use 24 gauge cables to connect your components to your receiver?

Cuz if so you probably could have just used Monoprice 28 AWG cables. If you're only going to use them for 3 or 6 foot connections, then they'll pose no problem at all for signal integrity.

Gotcha!

What type of power source component for plugging in, do you have on the top of your rack?

I honestly don't remember what gauge they are, they are in the bedroom now.

don't forget DVIGear, but yeah, the two you mentioned are the top two.

I also bought 1 2meter Monster M1000HD cable back at christmas. Looking back it probably wasn't worth the money but it was only 1, I'll probably buy from monoprice now on now that I have been educated but it'll be nice to have that one that will always have that insanely high bit rate.

I like Radio Shack cables. I think their prices are reasonable.
In 2015, the Dollar Tree will be selling HDMI cables, just like they are selling USB, Firewire and network cables. The manufacturer will include them with every component like they do composite rca cables.

Monster Cable would file for bankruptcy if they had to give out a free cable to everyone who bought an HDMI cable. You'll never see a free cable.
Let's say that you actually needed new cables in 5 years due to new technologies...

What is the NPV (net present value) of $100 worth of cables 5 years from now? Compare that to the additional cost of Monster vs. Monoprice/BlueJeans/whatever.

[Hint: Monster already did this calculation from a cashflow perspective....]

Try "Firefold.com" for cables of any kind. There prices are the best I have seen yet, and delivery was quick. $9.95 for a 15 ft HDMI, and delivery for $5.95 to my state. I have purchased many different types of cables from them and had "0" problems.
