Advice Please

Hello All,

I am sorry for the same old question but I have been reading everywhere for about a month and all I have managed to do is confuse the hell out of myself. I am wanting to build a htpc just to play movies. Nothing else. I want to rip my movie collection (normal DVD and some HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs) to keep them out of the hands of destructive little children. I have chosen a case with a 7" lcd touchscreen. And am partial to AMD just because they are the underdog but not against Intel for a good reason.

Now for the same ole question(s)

Which motherboard?
Which processor?
Which sound card?
Which video card?
One that can drive two outputs (one for 7" lcd and one for the tv) Or two separate video cards? Or a motherboard with video on board for the 7" lcd?

Thanks for any advice.

What is your budget?

I would like to stay under $800 total. The case is around $300.

so you spent almost half your total budget on the case?, because of a novelty pain in the butt 7" LCD ... ???, once you buy software and mouse and keyboard, you only are left with like 350 for the actual hardware, if that, i wish you luck getting a machine to do what you want to do for less than 350

Sorry, I have some of the components already. DVD drive, memory, quite fans, & p/s. I was not including the software in that budget.

tell us what hardware you have , we can't advise you on what to get , without knowing what it needs to be compatible with

Memory is cheap. Especially with all the sales and rebates one can find. I didn't want to limit my options. I have an LG combo HD-DVD & Blu-ray drive. I am sorry I did not provide enough information. Perhaps I should ask this way. I want to only play back ripped movies and utilize the 7" lcd display. I would prefer to use separate components vs a motherboard with video & audio on board. That will help upgrading in the future. Budget in not really an issue but I am about getting a good value. I do not need the absolute latest and greatest when something 1/3 the price will do just fine.

Are you saying you'll watch the movies on the 7" screen? If not - reconsider.
Or you'll probably be the first on AVS to make it useful.

Unless you want this box to perform other duties (on top of being an HTPC), starting with onboard audio/video is the best path. It will do everything you want it to do with the exception (maybe!) of smooth BD/HD playback. If/when that's the only thing left to do, you'll be able to upgrade with a $50 external video card. By then you might be able to just bitstream the lossless audio for decoding to your AVR.

Read the link in the second post. Look at 780G if you want AMD...

Nope, 7" is for menu use only.
