Is 7ft too short for a star ceiling?

I was planing on a DIY star ceiling, but I will only have a 7ft ceiling when all is said and done. Will a star ceiling look ok at that height? How much space does the stae ceiling take up? I was thinking about 2" at most.

i hope you get a lot of "not too low" responses. i have a 7 ft ceiling too and like the star ceilings but am concerned too low. and they hang down like 3 or 4 inches or so sometimes, don't they? i would absolutely love one that was astronomically-correct. anyone see one like that (ooops, sorry for the hijack)

It can be done.

I assume you are stilling going to do DD/GG? Assuming yes, be prepared for it to be a real pain in the ass.

Yes, DD & GG. Why will it be a pain?

I know a lot of people want to do this "star ceiling" but I just think it takes your eyes off what they need to be on...The movie. I just cant see putting the time and money in it...Looks neat...sure, but not something you need in a theater.

NOW....putting one over your bed...that would be cool! Like sleeping in the stars..

That would be sweet.

I don't plan on doing one right a way, but I'd like the option to do it in the future. My wife thinks I'm crazy for wanting one, but she also thought the HT was crazy when I first started talking about it. Now she is excited for it.

I would say it depends on if you are going to have a single row of seats or if you are doing a riser... with a riser it is way too low.

I have a little more than 7.5ft of height in my theater and I started a fiber optic ceiling, I quickly noticed that the height was too low and the effect of stars was gone completely. It looked just like little lights and thats it.

Personally I'd say 8.5' - 9' is where people should start thinking about fiber optic ceilings.

2 rows, one on a 8" riser.

You shoud be able to get away with it. If you plan to do it later on, just run conduit to the center of the location you plan to do it at. You can have the light unit at an equipment closet and then feed the fiber thru the conduit. My star panel was more of an after thought because I thougt it wasn't going to be an affordable option but when I found a kit at Starceiling-designer.com I was able to rework my ceiling to make it happen.

My ceiling was 7'6" before adding strapping and sheetrock. It is mostly centered over the front row but you get a nice view of the star panel for the rear row as well, like looking out a skylight.

My light units are the RGB models which are able to produce multiple colors.

His kit is the one I was thinking about trying.

I'm thinking about these issues with the same height ceiling. I wonder if going with a smaller fiber for the stars would help with the closeness issue. I think many people use 0.75mm fibers but you can get smaller ones. Perhaps someone will chime in on this one.

I put one of his kits in my theater. My ceilings are 7' 3".
I did a 4' x 8' pannel, used 1/4 plywood with a frame of 3/4 x 2 poplar screewed and glued to the outside, this made the frame rigid and I used the 3/4 gap to install fibers, but only lost 1" of ceiling.. Wrapped the whole think in black velvet. I think it came out great, The extra light is great becouse it does not reflect on screen but does help you see to eat your popcorn. One piece of advice would be use many different thicknesses of fiber and trim them to random lenths, makes the star field seem more real. I do not feel like it distacts from the move but I would not want twinkle effects.
