audessey vs SPL and tape measure??

I have a new Onkyo 606. I was wondering what the difference would be if I set up using audessey vs SPL meter and a measuring tape? I am new at this...never used audessey before. Lets say I measure out all the 5 speakers to the listening area. Then I set the speaker levels and the crossovers manually. What does the audessey do for me? I know it uses the eq but will it sound better? Any advice would be appreciated!

No comparison.
1. Measuring with a tape measure is OK for the main speakers but not for the subwoofer as there is usually a significant electronic delay in that circuit which you cannot detect with a tape measure.
2. How will you set the levels? Measurements with an SPL meter and pink noise are less accurate than the swept tones use by Audyssey.
3. How will you set the crossovers? Crossovers should be set based on FR in the room, not from specs. Thus, you will have to perform accurate FR measurements and, again, that is better accomplished with swept tones than with pink noise or with an RTA.
4. Then, of course, the correction for room modes and FR aberrations is additionally advantageous.
