A mixed bag. The PQ is very good to excellent for the most part especially wide shots and outdoor scenes. Comparable to Grand Prix. But there are scenes where the DNR have been turned up (in comparison to the rest of the transfer) resulting in smearing of the picture. This is notable mostly in medium shots and close ups. Minor artifacts is also visible. Meaning its not "grain" that you see there sometimes
Not an issue to most. Its not a disaster by all means but Warner has been very good (most of the time) in treating their "A" catalog titles. So this is not up to par to the very best they have.
AQ is excellent. Is it as good as the SACD? I can't comment on that since its hard to do a A/B setup on a "Quiet room"
Can anyone discern the difference? I don't know.
For only $14.99 at BB I think its worth a look and listen.

I do not like Amadeus all that much but I wonder what they will do with other movies that I really care for and that really could profit a lot from higher bitrates.

Their encoding folks probably haven't gotten the memo that they don't have to encode for HD DVD anymore.
I'm in for this on Sunday

It will be marked down to $14.99 at Best Buy during the week of Feb 15-21. You can probably expect Amazon to PM.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but how do you determine the difference between film grain and video noise grain? I believe film grain is usually more coarse and sometimes has a very fine blue/green like pattern to it; although sometimes it can be hard to tell depending on the frames and image, etc. Blocthy patterns also tend to indicate more in the way of artifacts it seems.

Question is does increasing the bit rate increase the cost of the encode?
If it does not, then the most likely reason is that they wanted a less grainy look to the final product.
If it were a classic game theory problem I'd approach it in the following way. The outcome we want is to maximize revenue from this title. The revenue is going to come from:
a. Upgrade people who have the DVD and are not videophiles
b. Upgrade people who have the DVD and are videophiles (DNR Hawks, folks who turn on bit rate monitors etc)
c. Sell to people who never bought the DVD and are not videophiles
d. Sell to people who never bought the DVD and are videophiles.
To me the best strategy is to have a 2 product strategy.
1. Offer a low cost product that targets the non videophile (more mainstream) market. Offer much better PQ and AQ at a reasonable cost.
2. At a later point offer a definitive version with higher price point for the videophile. That way, you may even end up upgrading some people in group 1.
Since the cost of offering product 2 over 1 is minimal they can capture the videophile market with a haigher margin product.
FWIW, I was able to pick Amadeus last night and it looks and sounds spectacular. I guess I am in the non-videophile category, but I am fine with that

The first shot demonstrates one of the things I like about HD that any film can benefit from. Assuming the focus is sharp enough, facial expressions can be made out from farther distances. In the BD shot, you can see the smile on his face.

Take a look at the Blu-ray shot in post 5. To me, the noise in the image looks like block noise, rather than film grain, kinda like the artifacts in the The Thing HD DVD.
