Help me design Home theater. Winner picks appropriate name of theater ;)

Alright basement will be ready to go in 3 months. I just ordered a crap load of wiring since I get a good deal on it.

Now the question after viewing so many AMAZING theaters here is, how will I do mine.

Can someone give me some ideas on how to set this up. I don't care if we use risers, L shaped couches, whatever. 7.1 surround, epson or equivalent HD projector.

The measurments are from 2 feet from bar so I have room for stools there. There is more to the basement but I had to leave her room for stuff as well.

This is not to scale which is why I gave measurements.

The 2 foot rectangle needs to be a false wall. All my gun safes are in there so if we can avoid blocking that it would be awesome.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions!

Help us, help you. Ceiling height? Lolly columns? HVAC trunk lines? Sound isolation needs? Desired amount of seating? Use of space - entertaining or fortress of solitude? Budget? DIY or pro construction? Skill level?

Ceiling is 7.5 feet or so. Would like to do a drop ceiling as it is easier down the road if something goes wrong. Also a little cheaper. I know it's not the best for sound but oh well.

HVAC all runs down the top side where I've written 11ft / 2ft There is a load bearing support beam that runs there as well which is where I plan to run all my wires down.

Seating is up to you. I guess that is my biggest problem, riser? no riser? couch single chairs.....

It's a DIY BUT I do have people coming for drywall and electrics because my skill lvl = 0 on both of those. AV side skill is good.

Use of space- don't care as long as it is comfortable. Walls are going to be grey and black. Bar is a dark oak. Fish tank is blue and fulll of salt water and coral

Thanks for the help.

LMAO @ the ammo dump

" Gunners Reef " Theater

Room is long enough for 2 rows of 3 theater style seats ... do you want to see the guns or can they be covered with acoustic panels on hinges ? ... is the room for sports ( 16:9 screen ) or movies (2.35:1 screen ) mostly ?
Ah I can attest to a drop ceiling being way more expensive than a drywall ceiling without thinking twice about it.

Accoustic on hinges please. I need to have the guns covered.

I can get a deal on drop ceilings that's why I say it's cheaper.

This will be 90% for movies!! The rest for Chicago Bears and Notre Dame football.

Not even enough for Big to overlay and sketch on yet, huh?

When you get to the stage of doing the acoustics then just use piano hinges to swing the acoustic panels out of the way so you can access the weapons

for mostly movie watching the screen I would recommend then would be a 2.35:1 scope screen ... do you have a budget for screen and projector yet ?

Piano hinges... Good idea. I want to cover the false wall with drywall. So I might build a door fram and put the acoustic panels in there.

No real budget but I'm not spending 5k on the projector or anything. I like the new Epson projector. Gonna go with a FIXED screen instead of a motorized screen.

Reason I ask for budget is you could put a 136" 2.35:1 scope screen which still gives you about a 110" 16:9 image ... use a false wall for the screenwall and make the screen a AT ( acoustically transparent ) and hide all the speakers behind it

the panny 3000 would be your simplest solution for a projector because you would not need a anamorphic lens to go with it so it would do HD and scope for you and 1080P

You can DIY the screen with Phifer Sheerweave ( check the CIH forum )

If I used the false wall wouldn't I be sitting a little close to the screen?

Thank-you for all the name suggestions but the winner of design picks the title

Yes, you would be a little closer to the screen but if you have 25' from the front of the bar (not sure if that is measurement from the wall?) giving up about 2-3 in the front of the room shouldn't be a huge concern. Especially since your speakers can be behind the screen and would't take up any floor space.

I see what you are saying oman but as I understood it he was talking of putting the screen where I am going to have the false wall. That would only be 11 Feet from wall to wall. (South to North on the pic)

The 25 foot measurement is from the East wall to the bars edge. The room is about 32 feet or so long give or take +2 or 3 feet.

How far from the bump out (where you have "11 feet") to the wall on the right? How wide is that bump out? All the measurements (or a scale drawing) would be really helpful here.

Also, can you put up a wall (with a door) between the "wife area" and where the theater will be? That would help with acoustics.

Do you want seats on a riser between the bar and the screen, or do you want the floor flat? Given the right amount of space, you could put a small riser starting at the 2 foot bump in the middle of your picture extending down ~8 feet toward the false wall. With seats on this and seats in front of this facing a screen on the right seems like your best option.

I'm open to all options risers, flat ect.

I mever thought of putting a riser right beside that bump. I could attach right to the 2 ft bump. That 2 foot bump is around my furnace.

I wish I could draw it in scale for you but I have never even attemted that and would not know where to begin.

If someone wants to offer some help I am always willing to learn

You buy a pad of grid line paper. Then assign 1,2 or 4 boxes per ft depending on what will fit.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Now with scale drawings I"m sure someone must have some ideas...
the screen wall can be on the 10.5 (upper part of the graph) the other 10.5 could be the place for equipment rack just behind the seats or could be a media wall also. And and I win I would name your Hometheater THE BUNKER.....goodluck

I dont see anything wrong with the way you have it layed out with only one comment ... you should probably look into some type of masking for the marine tank when you want to watch movies as the light on those things tend to be bright ( especially if you have corals - probably metal halide, VHO or T5 = BRIGHT ) unless you are going to shut out the lights every time you watch a movie which may stress the fish/corals

How many people do you want to seat?
If it is a lot are you open to using refurbished or new Theater Seats instead of couches or HT recliners?

see seatsandchairs.com

You might want to think about doing a row of seating and a sit at bar behind that for the second row and eliminate the riser. You could tie the look of it to the other bar and it would give you a cinema pub kind of feel.

You really need to pull out every trick in the book to keep the wall adjacent to the furnace as small as possible Do you have a picture of that part?

Don't know if you've seen buffbakers build?

Ya, guns are going up in that top 10.5. I need to hide them away.

I was thinking of some sort of cover to go over it or side cabinets that will pull out and cover the front. I don't want to shut the lights off. They will be on timers to simulate day and night to promote a good healty reef.

I'll take a picture of it today and try and get it up. Bigmouth what is the projector you were talking about further up the thread. What kind of cost?

I like that other build he's done a good job.
