Incredibly strange finding on my subwoofer placement, explaination/thoughts?

I have been trying to re-angle my sub and move it around the corner area by my left tower with no pleasing results since I moved into my current house. I finally got the idea during my lunch time to try and place it protruding out of the closet a bit and have the front port facing the wall as to "bounce" towards the seating area. I was actually surprised to see that this worked extremely well and seemingly more than doubled the bass output being received from the seating positions.

Prior to moving the sub to the open door closet, I had it facing the large sofa about 8" from the wall, but it seemed that somehow all the sound was being trapped in the closet / area and I would get "port" more noticeable than the bass at times.

I remember reading on here so many times that corners were a typically bad spot, so what is the explanation for the cleaner sounding better bass, and not boomy either? Was it due to the enclosed area trapping or having the waves bounce back from the closet area and cancel themselves?

Subwoofer is Elemental Designs A2-300, down firing, front ported sub.

Honestly most of the time I really like the way a subwoofer sounds in a corner compared to head on. Maybe that is just me. I could very see the location you chose to be a good one.

Why is it incredibly strange?

Why it sounded bad previously and sounds better now could be due to any number of things. There are a lot of variables there. The sub has been moved. Not only is the port firing a different direction, but, more importantly, the sub is now in the closet! Doubtful the "bouncing" off the wall is as important in affecting the sound as simply redirecting the port. With the sub in the closet and the port redirected, it is really no surprise if the sub sounds less boomy, now.

To really see what is going on you would need to accurately measure your room's FR. But if moving the sub provided an FR that you find sounds better, whether the FR is flatter or not, then "why?" isn't really important is it?
