Laptop to HDTV connection HELP

Hello all I require some much needed assistance. After a few hours of trying i am unsucessful when trying to connect my laptop to my hdtv via hdmi cable. I have no problems with the hdmi cable when it is connected to my xbox 360.

specs of my laptops graphics card:

ati radeon hd 3200

specs of my television:

sharp 26 inch hdtv with 480i/p viewing

this is a brand new hdmi cable that i have purchased, i have tried resetting my resolutions from the lowest setting to the highest setting yet i am still getting the same thing a blank black screen when the pc is booted to the desktop. however i have noticed that i can view the desktop on the tv when the computer is in safe mode, the bios, and boot menus and when the pc first loads showing the green Microsoft status bar. also the pc and the hdtv are set so that the hdtv is a clone of what is on the desktop rather than extended.

any advice would be appreciated!

It is probably because you have cloned your tv to your monitor so the resolution being sent to the TV is one that is not supported by HDMI. So you can make the tv the primary display and clone the monitor to the tv (ie swap displays) and set the resolution of the desktop to a standard HD resolution (1280x720) or the native tv resolution (if the TV supports this over hdmi). What model is your Sharp?

just tried the swapping of displays as well that diet work. Does any one think it could be the wire or the graphics card ? I read on another forum that this guy was having the same problem and when he tried a mother hdmi cable he got it to work. However the wire that I am using is brand new just opened yesterday .
