Pioneer now or new Panasonic?

Would you buy the Pioneer PDP-5020FD for under $2000 right now, or wait for whichever of the new Panasonics were at about the same price?

Pioneer. Get it while it's cheap.

It will be another generation or two before Panny catches up to it.

Thats really what I would like to know. I currently own a 5080 and am very happy with it. My plan is to move the 5080 out into the living room and buy a new and possibly larger plasma for the theater. The reason why I didn't jump on the 9g bandwagon was because this was going to be my "final" tv purchase and I wanted absolute black and no motion reduction in movement. I know the 9g was all around better in both of those areas but still not perfect I think the motion resolution drops to somewhere around 950-900. My question is will we ever see a Panasonic capable to do everything that I want in a "perfect" display. (neo-pdp?) Keep in mind that I am happy in waiting a couple of years as that was already my plan.

I have a 5080 as well and I'm just trying decide what model of 9g I want before they are all gone.

The black level of the 9g is close to perfect now...0.001 or something like that. It's a point of debate of how much lower it could go and if it would be noticeable.

^^^ For me , my 9g is 99% perfect.

Do not Buy Pioneer PDP-5020FD - Read Reviews at Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-PDP-5020FD-50-Inch-1080p-Plasma/dp/B001AAPEDC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1234632327&sr=1-1

Review stated Pioneer will exit TV Business by Mar 2010. will they stop producing spare parts too?

Get a Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ800U which is the same range
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Viera-TH-50PZ800U-50-Inch-Plasma/dp/B00142JKSG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1234632327&sr=1-3

Why would you get the Panasonic TH50Pz800u when you can get the Pioneer 5020FD at the same price?

Yeah, those reviews are pretty terrible. I mean, only 4.5 stars out of 5 over 49 reviews?

Well, I was in that same situation, and I went for the 5020 about 2 weeks ago and I have no regrets, and was as big a Panny fan as they come.

You know whats I ironic is that the 50PZ800U received, such glowing reviews as well as the 5020FD, but more people looked at the PZ800U as an option. Now you don't hear nothing about the PZ800 as the prices have declined on the Kuro's. Strange how prices can make decisions change.

People are talking about the 58pz800u v. 5020.

I'm going to have to place my vote for the pioneer on this one

Looks almost unanimous for the Pioneer. I guess no one thinks the Neo-PDP Panasonics will rival the Kuro?
My one concern is, what about long term customer support from Pioneer? I can't really afford to buy a new TV every couple of years so whatever I purchase will be for the long haul.

I would grab a 111 if you can. However, I saw the new Pannys at CES and they delivered excellent PQ, not quite the level of a 9G Kuro but pretty darn close. Close enough for most I would say.

How did the blacks look on the Pannys? Where they slightly or way better than a lcd?
i'd get a pioneer now. panny will never get to where pio is from a pq standpoint. if they havent reached kuro blacks by now, they will not by the time oled makes its way to the market. im projecting a couple of years. i feel plasma is on its way out. with kuro out of the picture, the lcds will outsell plasmas 10 fold.

1) Saying "never" is absurd they will probably do it next year, that is especially true if they buy the pioneer technology.

2) OLED is still 4 to 6 years out for 50 inch and bigger sets and even then they wont be affordable. We're looking at a decade on mainstream 50 inch sets for 1500 bucks.

3) Plasma may be on its way out, its up to panasonic to save them. We'll see...
