Bose Acoustimass 10 and H/K AVR 254. What is better

Hi everybody,
I was reading this forum for past few week now, but definitely had to start a bit earlier.
28 days ago I had purchased the Bose Acoustimass 10 Series IV and Harman\\Kardon AVR 254.
I am definitely returning HK due to it's bugs (even after the firmware upgrade it still loses picture when switching between SD and HD), but was pretty sure that Bose AM10 is a good purchase up to day, when I decided to read what you all think of Bose. And it is definitely not a good opinion.
Anyways, my question is. I am considering returning both, but want an expert advice on what better to take for the price. There is a constraint with a store, since the original purchase was made on Future Shop (aka Best Buy Canada) gift card, thus I can buy only from them.
Please see the links below for Surround speakers packages and AV Receivers and advice what is better to buy. I must say that the choice is not very big.
I had paid $1000 for Bose, and $790 for HK. All in Canadian dollars, same as prices on the futureshop.ca
Thus, my budget is $ 1800 - 2000.
Please advice only things that can be found on futureshop.ca
I am using 52" Sony Bravia KDL52W4100, PS3, Motorolla PVR (the one that didn't get along with HK), Nintendo Wii.
Will use it mostly for watching TV, Blu ray movies, and playing FIFA 09 .
I have two days left to return it, therefore would appreciate your opinion.
Please be more detailed and less "oh, anything will be better than Bose".
I would also like to hear your opinion on what is good about those Bose AM 10 (what is bad I've already read). I really like it's size, and cannot afford big speakers due to space limitation. The room size is approximately 3.5 m to 5 m, but TV is in the corner, where only small speakers can fit.

Thanks for your help.

First. I am not sure why you would spend almost the same amount on speakers and your AVR. With a $2K budget I would spend no more than $500 on your AVR. Second your links dont work. Third, I see Future Shop carries Mission and Energy. Both good brands and both worlds better than Bose and both manufacture small systems. They have Klipsch too and the Cinema 5 would work. Good things about Bose? Size, and ease of use with some systems and of course brand recognition.

If you aren't happy with the HK swap it out for the Denon AVR-889; this is essentially a re-badged 2309. Same price as the HK.

Get the Velodyne 10" sub, on for $400.

Did you listen to the other speakers? Which did you prefer Polk, Klipsch or Energy?

Do you like towers or bookshelves for the fronts?

Can you use your FS card online? If you can then the Mission speakers are also an option for you.

Whichever package you build from any of those vendors will represent better value than the Bose.

Thanks for the reply
Yes I can use gift card online, so anything on futureshop.ca could be purchased.
Any more thoughts? Anybody?

Go to FS and listen to the speakers and come back and tell us which ones you preferred the sound of.

FS has an Energy 5.1 package on for $1209 (CAN) that would blow the doors off any Bose system. Package that with a Denon Pioneer or Yamaha receiver to match your budget and you would a good value.

I really would love to get those towers, but I have no space to put them, so I have to limit myself to those small satellite speakers.
What do you think of Energy Take Classic 5.1. It's $899. There is also Polk RM85FS for $999.99. How do they compare to each other and to Bose AM10?
I would love to listen and compare, but tomorrow is a last day to return it, and I will not have a chance to visit FS today, thus I rely on your advice.

Thanks

There are decent bookshelf options from all of Polk, Energy, Klipsch and Mission.

They are all better than Bose.

How they compare to each other to us doesn't matter, only how they differ to you.

Return the Bose, get credit, listen to the others, choose and buy.

You are really asking a question that we cant answer.....or we would. We can't tell you what you are going to like. Do you understand? It seems you want someone to come out and say that one of these speakers is definitively better than the other.

As already stated, you should probably avoid Bose. Energey makes great stuff. I say go with that and a more realistic AVR (in the $500ish range perhaps) and use the extra coin for other things like tunes or whatver else FS sells. Dont know if they carry any type of room treatments but that would make a bigger impact on your sound than any AVR will.

Nothing you buy at FS is the wrong thing. All of these manufacturers are in busines so they must be doing something right.
