Anybody here have experience with the Synology 209+ for media streaming? Looking to to buy a NAS to:
- stream video to a Popcorn Hour (mostly DVDs and AVIs plus a few HD-quality files)
- run Squeezecenter for one Squeezebox, maybe 2 or 3 later
- serve image files so the wife can view her photography collection
- access office docs from a laptop

Anybody here have experence with the 209+. Seems like the ideal choice, just want to make sure there are no show-stoppers before I pull the trigger.

Well, I am not familiar with this thing, but SC runs on very few NASs (only NetGear AFAIK). I took a quick look at the spec sheet and didn't see any mention of SqueezeCenter; what makes you think it will run it?

So we are past that issue, it runs it. Just looking to know if there are any hidden issues with the unit.

A bit of a thread necro, but I just purchased a Synology DS109 for use as a backup location and a mass storage for music. I hope to use it directly with my Pioneer SC-05, which can play files over ethernet, but we'll see if I can get everything configured.

So far, here are my impressions of the DS109:
Build quality looks pretty good. Outer casing is plastic, with a sheetmetal support for the internal PCA and HDD mounting. Two small screws hold the outer covers together; removing the screws allows one to slide the covers apart from eachother. They seem to form a sturdy connection mechanically, even without the screws. The HDD mounting is slick, with no wire required. I got my DS109 along with a 1.5TB Seagate HDD as part of a Newegg combo deal (the deal was only -$10.00, so it wasn't a huge deal).

The setup has gone pretty smoothly. This thing seems to have the capability to do pretty much anything, so I'll need to work on understanding networking/security a bit better. I've so far managed to set up a couple standard user accounts, enable iTunes streaming and UPnP capabilities (not sure if any of them work yet though). I'm currently copying about 13GB of MP3's from my PC to the NAS over my 100mb network connection. The DS109 seems to be keeping the network @ 85-100% utilization, so it's going decently. Seemed to take about 20 minutes to do the transfer. Not sure if it would have gone much faster with a 1000mb network, or if it was CPU limited on the NAS side.

Anyhow, so far so good. Next step is to see if I can get it hooked up to the SC-05.

I have a Synology 207+ and a 107e. I use both of them to stream to a Popcorn Hour A110. They both work great and I can not tell the difference between then even playing Blue-Ray Rips. I also use the Synology 207+ to run Squeeze Center and stream to multiple devices Soft Squeeze and Squeeze Box Classic. Again Not a single problem. The Synology units are great. I use then for FTP, Web Server, Audio and Video Streaming and even Video Surveillance with WiFi Based Cameras. For the Money that can not be beat. I think a Synology 209 would be more then adequate.
