Well, I've been reading this thread literally for hours now, but I confess much of it simply goes over my head, and I am driving myself crazy trying to figure it all out and reaching a decision. I am sure many of you know the feeling.
The question is I am upgrading from my Yamaha HTR-5660, which I am very pleased with, for its solid, robust build as well as for its audio quality, but, since I moved from DVD to blu-rays, I really need HDMI capabilities to take advantage of lossles audio tracks.
This very morning, when I saw the RX-V665 going for some $300 (tax included) at Amazon, it seemed to me like a decent deal, but then I explored this thread and now I am worrying about it being a little short in the power department. Living in a condo, I don't plan to push it at all, but I guess extra power makes for crispier, cleaner sound, even if you don't need it (more so when you can't crank it up because of your neighbors and you need the receiver to excite your speakers with finesse even at lower, softer volume; and no, I don't like any of that "night play" dynamic range reduction).
So, I put my sights on to RX-V765, and I liked more and more with every Google search for reviews and opinions. And the current little-bit-over $400 price tag (again, taxes included) made it attractive enough. But then... I found the RX-V1065 for a better, just a little bit lower price.
Truth is, I consider myself quite discriminating and demanding when it comes to sound, with quite a trained ear, but I don't really need many of the features on the RX-V765, much less the RX-V1065. I don't plan to use the receiver as a hub to distribute video signals, I have both my cable box and my blu-ray player hooked directly to my CRT Sony TV, and I am happy with that configuration (I am letting the Pioneer blu-ray take care of all audio decoding and video upscaling if needed for DVDs). And I will use the receiver mostly for Home Theater, not for stereo music, so I do not need any audiophile quality. I just want a good, solid Home Theater receiver to make the most of any movie's sound, be it quiet dialogs or bombastic explosions. So...
Should I fork out the extra bucks (around $130 difference) for the 1065, or should I save and settle for the 665? Will the 665 sound poorer than my current HTR-5660?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
