Haven't bought anything yet but...

I'm considering getting a receiver and some speakers. There is an itch to buy now but I really don't have to. My current budget is around $1200 for both the receiver and the speakers.

I'm strongly considering the Onkyo TX-SR706. I thought about the 606 but figured the upconverting scaler was better in the 706 than the 606 and the 706 has one more HDMI connector and a better EQ. I thought about the 806 but that will force me to get speakers that are out of my price range...

So based on this information. I've been leading toward the Polk RM95 with a Polk PSW 110 subwoofer. I also considered Polk RM705, which seems to be the RM75 with a tiny subwoofer with it.

I know that this isn't a lot to work with but I really don't want a HTIB, though I did consider the Onkyo 7100 (has the 606 as the receiver).

Now, my plan is to get a "starter" speaker system that's not too big because my plan is to move that speaker system into my bedroom once I replace all the other speakers.

I did see some posts that say I should possibly bypass the Polks and go with eDesign or The Speaker Company but I figured I'd ask anyway. I cannot spend more than $1200 and nothing has been purchased yet.

Any ideas?

What's your Blu-ray player? Does it decode lossless? Does it upconvert SD DVDs well?

The right answer to these questions would let you spend less on receiver and more on speakers.

If the answer to the last 2 questions is yes, then get a refurb Marantz sr4002 from accessories4less for $260 and have over $900 left for your 5.1.

You could clone my 5.0 fairly cheap:

- KEF iQ1 from a4l, $230
- rears, KEF 2001.2 from a4l, $180
- centre, KEF iQ2c from Vanns, $100

Then get a nice sub, like an SVS PB10-NSD, $430

Total: $1200

Thanks for the response.

I haven't bought a Blu-ray player yet as I'm not convinced it's worth it at this time. It'd be a hard sell to my wife who is happy with the cheaper DVDs and the upconverted look on the HDTV.

Based on the feature set of the Marantz sr4002 you suggested, it seems similar to the Onkyo TX-SR606 but with less features for the same amount. Is there a good reason to go Marantz over Onklyo?

Looking at some of the KEF speakers make me feel like waiting until I can get a system with Muon speakers.... but that's WAY over my budget.

If you can get a 606 for <$300 that good, go for it.

Different people prefer different receivers. Get an Onkyo, Denon, Marantz, Pioneer or Yamaha that has the features you want at a good price.

You know, there are quality differences between different DVD upconversions, right. That's why I'm waiting for the Oppo Blu-ray player, to maximize the value from my existing DVD collection.

Yeah, the quality difference in upconversion was why I was looking at the TX-SR706 after I researched the TX-SR606. I may just wait for the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-k.

Or maybe I'll wait until next year and spend $4000 and I'm sure that will get me a nice set of speakers and decent receiver to match.

I've gone this long without a receiver so another year won't hurt I guess.

Look to the Blu-ray player to upconvert, not the receiver.

Ended up getting the 806. Couldn't pass up the deal at $617 from Amazon.

I'm looking at KEF IQ7 floorstanders, IQ6C center channel, and perhaps one (or two) set of IQ3 bookshelf speakers. Now the floorstanders and center channel are within the power range for the 806 but the IQ3 handles up to 120 watts.

My 806 pushes out 130 per channel. I don't plan on having the volume very loud.

So my question, am I running a risk with overpowering the IQ3 with the Onkyo 806?
