I do not know the nature of the issues with OTA that has prompted the local affiliate to stop xmitting the TVGOS data though it may be safe to assume that some folks were not receiving the main broadcast signal or may have been experiencing signal breakup or similar issues with being able to watch TV. I wonder if what you are experiencing might be related in some fashion. However, the only way you can test this is if you can get your local station to stop xmitting the data and then see if you can record a show without your unit locking up.
I contacted WBNS in Columbus as my DTVPal DVR has not populated with TVGOS data in several days and seems to be rebooting/freezing more than normal. The exchange is below (read from the bottom up):
