What's a powercenter and what else do I need to get when buying a TV?

I'm getting my new Panasonic Plasma this week. I have a dish network reciever in my room. The guy from the place I'm getting it from was telling me about how important it is to have a "powercenter" and a bunch of other cables in order to really enjoy the TV. So, my question is what is a powercenter? Am I gonna need anything else that doesn't come with the TV?

He is just trying to sell you more stuff. I worked in a home theater store for a while and they were always trying to get us to sell expensive power conditioning systems and $100 HDMI cables because the profit margin was so high. You don't need anything special on the power side, or expensive HDMI cables. If you need an HDMI cable, get one from monoprice.com or bluejeanscable. Great quality, inexpensive, quick delivery. If you are worried about power, buy a simple surge protector.

Thanks alot, I really appreciate your input. I think I already have a surge protector, it's made by tripp lite... it's something you plug power cords into instead of the wall right?

And in regards to the tv, I just wanna be able to watch it. I don't care about HD. Do I need anything else that doesn't already come in the box?

An HDTV does not need a power center if your SD TV didn't. A standard surge protector should be used for your TV and it's associated STBs.

It depends on what your HD source is. If you are using a set-top-box (STB), from Cable or DBS:
- For HD video, you will need either an HDMI or component video cable from the STB to the HDTV.
- For digital multichannel audio, you'll need either an optical or coax digital cable from the STB to audio surround receiver/processor.

If you're just using OTA or cable clear QAM into the HDTV, and have no external audio system, then no other cable will be needed.

Wait I'm confused, I have a dish network reciever in my room. All I want to do is continue what I'm doing right now, which is watching with the dish network reciever on my tube tv and playing videogames / watching movies. Can I do that with the Panasonic Plasma 42 inch X1 Series TC-P42X1 that I'm gonna be getting without getting anything extra?

I don't think it is. It's standard definition.
