I am thinking about dumping Netflix because of the new charges. I don't know if it is worth keeping it just for the streaming - not all titles available, yet. Too bad there there isn't a comparable option.

Regards...JL

Ok, this is a weird one. Was watching Top Shot Season 2 on the Bravia Netflix app and got to episode 4, "Compound Fracture". About 1:40 secs in, the picture began stuttering, the sound went out, and then my TV shut off and then re-started itself with most of my settings reset including date and time. It was as if the TV was reset.

Thinking it was a fluke, I set the date and time, etc. and fired up Netflix again. Same show, same episode. Bam..exact same thing at the exact same point.

Now I was worried. I tried another show; American Dad, for a couple episodes and it was fine. Tried Top Shot ep 4 again...same thing...shuts the TV off and restarts it with most settings reset. Very alarming. Called Netflix and they said to avoid that episode on the Bravia until they figure what happened. I am able to watch it on my BD player, but that one episode makes my XBR9 very upset!

Anyone have any similar problem in the past?

I can try it out for you and let you know if it happens to me.

Does anyone know of a way to get closed captions working with streaming Netflix. My son has a traumatic brain injury and needs closed captions. We can stream Netflix just fine but can't get captions to work. I have tried streaming programs that are supposed to have closed captions but can't get it to work. He has a PS3 that we can stream through but it just seemed easier to go direct through the KDL46XBR9. Thanks.

I don't think XBR9 supports closed captions from Netflix when streaming directly.
I am beginning to think that is the case. I guess that I will try and stream through the PS3 because I understand that it will do closed captions.

i'm getting the "sorry, the right to view this content has expired" while trying to use neflix on xbr9, but everything works fine on ps3. it worked fine the other week.

also, when i try to do an update for the tv it says:

checking...

an error occured during the software update.
the update could not be completed.

suggestions?

...and dont be a SA and say, just use your ps3. ha

I remember all the controversy and talk of using the xbr9 as a 3d display.
Has anyone hooked up a VIP 3D unit to one? I am guessing theater, but any unit would be interesting to hear about.
I am curious how well it works/doesn't work.
Thanks.

Have you tried downloading the update from Sony's website and installing it with a usb drive?

nope. how do i do that?

it usually just downloads it to tv...has there been a recent update?

would that be causing my netflix issue?

edit: nevermind http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...d=6760#install

i'll check it out tonight, but i could swear i did an update a few months ago, so that could be the same one. i'll check the fw number.

still doesnt explain my netflix issue though since it was just working fine last week or so.
guess i'll just waste more electricity by using the ps3 for netflix.

edit2:
i apparently only had the one prior to 5/14/11. hopefully this fixes it.

edit3:
nope, still nothing. i do the network setup and everything says "ok", but now when i try to go into netflix or any other service....after about 5 seconds, it says:

the process was not completed and has timed out (retry) (cancel).

i tried unplugging/replugging ethernet cable, resetting modem & router, but nothing...and i shouldnt have had to do that since the network setup says everything is fine

wtf???

edit3:
had to do a soft reset after update, that did it.

power on tv + hold up arrow on remote for 10 seconds, then hit the power off button on side of tv while still holding up. tv resets

Ok I now have an interesting issue as well. The tv suddenly dropped the picture but you can still hear the audio. This is the bedroom tv so I’m running HDMI from the dvr & BD directly to the sony. So first thought was ok bad cable. Switched the BD HDMI cord with the DVR and same thing, no picture but sound only. So two bad cables??? Not likely. Also when I was switching inputs, on the top of the screen the Sony displays the source, etc. and it would then bleed red (from white) and slowly fade out. So now I’m at the WTF stage. But when I unhook all the cables, the Sony menu page appears saying that there is no connection but that picture looks fine so I’m at a loss. I decided to shut it off and turn it back on and nothing, same issues. So I shut it off for about an hour or so, grab a new cable, plugged it in and I got picture. Ok so good. Then I decided to re-try the initial two cables and those work now?? So WTF? But obviously my concern was the bleeding red text fading slowly. I guess if it happens again I have an issue. I got this tv this past spring in the Sears deal so I’m under warranty still. Any thoughts? TIA.

Mark

I have a Sony 52" XBR9 purchased December 2009 and recently starting seeing a blurry screen with horizontal lines on the left half of the screen for about the first 5 minutes of use every day. Here are a couple of pics:

A google search has found that this seems to be a common problem. Anyone else here having these problems or have any suggestions? I chatted with the Sony chat bot and ran through the possible options (disconnect inputs, plug directly into the wall outlet, reset to factory settings), it wasn't any help.

weird, never seen that before.
hopefully someone can help u out.

The last couple of posts (from wmarkw and hawley1975) are classic examples of the dreaded panel tab bond failure. Sony is covering this issue with some models (XBR4 is one) but not the XBR9. That seems totally outrageous. Still, I would contact Sony and let them know that another top tier television of theirs is junk.
I don't own the XBR9 but just wanted to give some insight on a common problem associated with these models (and others).
Good Luck!
Thanks for the info. I can report that I have not had any issues since my post last month.
I found this website due to a half backlit panel on a KDL52XBR9. I purchased it 04/2010. It failed this past week. Had the tech come over and provide a diagnosis and estimate for repair. Left side top tabs failed. Parts and labor costs $3382.15. Now I have 2 52 inch brick.

I've read the fixes on the XBR4. In the meanwhile I will be writing Sony.

looks like you chose not to purchase an extended warranty
(not sure how Sony will respond)
you may still be in luck if you purchased with a credit card that doubles the manufactors warranty, so two years
post #2780 of 2853
I do have the extended. The fact that it has to be used for something known to fail, is ridiculous. I have been a staunch SONY purchaser for decades. Depending on how they respond may change that. I almost bought the wireless 52" XBR10. After this fiasco, very glad I did not.

Well, it's not like you only get to use the extended warranty once.

If my 26 month old 52" XBR9 fails, I'll be ranting too.

If someone else with this model has a similar problem, his post gives them so helpful info.
I don't think it's unreasonable to think that a $2000 TV would last more than 5 years. Incidentally, this problem essentially totals the TV. The repair estimate was $2600.

I've got an action plan for anyone with a similar problem, condensed from the steps I took:

1. Call tech support, go through their troubleshooting script (now unplug the inputs, plug the power directly into the wall, etc.) get an event ID number.

2. Print the event ID number on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper in a large font, tape it to your TV, and take a picture of the screen (preferably using a tripod) showing the display problem as well as the Event ID. The printed Event ID is required by Sony to prove that it's actually your TV. I also took a picture of the Sony support screen showing the TV serial number.

3. They won't move forward until the problem has been diagnosed by a Sony Authorized repair center. You can find one through the Sony tech support site and e-mail them the picture, event ID, and description of the problem. The tech at the center I e-mailed was nice enough to diagnose the problem over e-mail for free.

4. Forward the pictures and the diagnosis to the folks at the Sony Listens e-mail.

Good luck!

As you can guess from my post count, I don't plan on staying around here. Just came to find out what was up with my TV and then posted some info that I thought would be helpful to anyone else with the same problem.

In my absence, you should definitely keep increasing your post count (over 4,000, wow!) with the snarky comments.

I have a Sony 52" XBR9 that looks like it is having the same problem as Hawley above. I bought the extended warranty so they are going to replace my set. I haven't looked into this in a while. They are offering a KDL55EX720 as a replacement. I think it's lower end than the XBR9 was when I bought it in December of 2009. What do you think the current equivalent model would be?
