The Official KDL...XBR9 Thread - Page 95

I bought a Sony KDL-32XBR9 for my mom who used it for 2 years, sound from internal speakers would sputter (not pop)
& disappear intermittently, cable company came 2-3 times thought it was a signal strength issue. TV was also slow
and glitchy when changing channels, tried different HDMI cables, new cable box, etc. In the end she just "lived with it".

Now I have been trying to use the TV for a 2nd room system myself with a Denon AVR-4310 and DBP-A100 and it
has truly been a nightmare...HDMI handshake Hell! I have tried all the usual things...checked cabling and connections,
turned off deep color and I/P scaling in AVR (helped some), set resolution to fixed 1080i and/or 1080p instead of auto,
turned off HDMI control (which is a real bummer because I'm using Denon Link with the AVR & BDP and with it off the
infamous "3rd light" on the player remains dim!!). The symptoms are intermittent flashing, white snow and green screen
(the flashing can be "controlled" but never 100% eliminated). Same AVR & BDP configuration works PERFECT with 2
other LCD TVs in the house, an old Sony KDL-40XBR4 and a newer Samsung UN26BC4000. Out of desperation I tried
the 32XBR9 in my main system (Denon AVR-4311 and same BDP using Denon Link) and while BETTER than the 4310
configuration, HDMI control on really makes the Sony glitchy...no flashing but intermittent black & green screen issues, as
out of nowhere while watching a Blu-ray the Sony "re-boots"...and after movie is over and I go into the menu to turn HDMI
control off (just use it for Denon Link) on the TV and 4311, this crazy Sony shuts off audio from the AVR and fires up the TV's
internal speakers automatically! Then I have to go through more contortions to get back to the 4311 doing sound...unbelievable.
While the 4311 & BDP don't play nice with the Sony, they work FINE with the other 2 TVs, just as the 4310 & BDP do.
Has anybody tried to use this model Sony with an AVR/player and had problems? I have done what Sony's website calls a
power reset (unplugging 30 min, plugging in) and also restored factory defaults on TV.
I have not done firmware upgrades that seem to address a contrast issue and popping sound issue, but I guess that's my only hope.
This 32XBR9 has very mixed reviews, certainly inferior to my 40XB4, which is HDMI handshake Heaven (so is my Samsung 26").
I do have an extended warranty for it through BB....
HELP PLEASE!!!
thanks David

i have a denon avr but only have digital optical audio going from 40xbr9 to it. the hdmi handshake issue frustrated me when i 1st got it and best buy came out 3 times and were about to replace it but sony themselves stepped in(after i kept emailing/callling them) and replaced the tv themselves. i love the picture and size of this tv(especially in my entertainment center) and i couldnt find compariable dimensions for the size of tv to my center, and the correct brand, so i just gave up looking. my samsung tv doesnt have hdmi issues.

I have the problem with lines and ghosting at warmup on my kdlxbr9. Is this the problem that Sony has issued the extended warrenty for?

Yes. See bkushin's post on 6/29/12 at 4:18 post #2800. Sony offered a replacement set for the known issue. I was issued KDL-55HX750 at no cost.

However, my sony wouldn't retain the setting even though it can get the channels while the tv is on. When I change to antenna, then the tv would scan just fine, but once it's off and is turned on again, the tv would not be able to display any channels. Same thing with the tv guide, no retention of the downloaded programming. it errors with update through internet and usb. I've tried multiple times. Also tried multiple resets by holding the up and pressing power on the tv and repeated settings with no luck. No problem on actual picture quality. Can still play fine from my PS3 or computer, but very annoying because it takes 1/2 hour to scan all the channels over each time just to watch my HD stations. Any idea any one? Please help.

I'm having the exact same problem with my KDL-46XBR9. Does anybody have a solution?

If you find anything please let me know. I've had this problem for so long with no luck. It's so annoying.

My TV has the dreaded tab issue so I called Sony to see what they can do. I've read some people were able to get the 55HX750 as a replacement but this is no longer the case. You will receive a refurbished 52XBR9. I'm not sure if I should be happy because will this problem happen again? Sony also says it covered under a two year warranty. After the warranty is up and it does the same thing, you're out of luck.
I tried to argue for a new set but they will not budge. I even asked if they found the root problem to the tab issue and they did not comment.

I hope I don't get another bum TV. For a replacement, you need to give them your credit card and Sony expects the defective TV within 15 days or they will charge your credit card.

I'm really not enjoying Sony's reputation for "Quality" because I don't think they stand by their products. Sad to say, I will buy other brands besides Sony..what a shame!!!

they sent me a refurb also. this is normal. it didnt solve my issue but am happy i can see model no, fw ver, etc direct from tv again. after components were replaced i lost all that btw. good luck.

DO NOT give them your credit card number, there is absolutely no reason they need your credit card number for a warranty issue. It is really shady that they are asking for it and demanding it but don't give it, they will eventually give you the tv after you refuse. Unless you are actually purchasing something you should never give out your credit card number under any circumstances, this is just another way for someone to get your personal information they don't need and it is disturbing Sony is allowing this to happen.

The alternative is to ship them your broken TV first. They will send your replacement after they receive it.

They will eventually send you the refurb unit and will switch it out with your old one if you keep saying you are not going to give out your credit card number to them under any circumstance unless you are buying something. They will just say it has to come from a different warehouse:rolleyes: and will take longer eventually. No warranty extension or good faith money reimbursement should require a customer to give someone their credit card number, social security number, or other personal information that is not needed. Once they have your credit card number they can charge a fee on it or claim whatever they want and charge you on it even though they will of course assure you they won't. If you have no problem giving out your personnel/financial information unnecessarily to people/places for more and more things then go ahead and give out you CC number or other information just for a warranty extension. I will never do it unless I am specifically using that credit card to purchase something, every financial adviser will tell you never give out your credit card number unless you are purchasing something directly. More and more companies, sites, etc are trying to make you give them more and more of your personnel information which they should not have.

I've had the same problem and gotten now help from Sony

Not sure how many people are still following this thread, but wondering if anyone else is experiencing a problem I have off and on with my 46" XBR9. When I watch streaming videos from Netflix or Amazon Instant Video, sometimes the video doesn't fill the screen completely. I can switch to my Sony N460 Blu-ray Player and watch the same videos (on the same TV) and they are full-screen as they should be. Anyone have any ideas on this?

It's not the end of the world, but it's annoying to have to turn on the DVD player for something the TV should do fine on its own.
they finally posted what our firmware updates are on the sony site. it appears they have separate versions for internet connected tv and update from the site download.

My sister moved and within a couple of weeks her KDL-52XBR9 display started looking dark when they turned it on After a few minutes the TV is normal again. Occasionally the TV will start OK and then after a few minute the same side will get dim. Again, the set's brightness comes back in a short time. This problem is always on the same side of the display. After it's gone through this cycle, the picture quality is fine.

It sounds to me like there is a bad connection that's effecting one section of the back light. My understanding is that the back light has three sections, but I've never owned a LCD display.

If anyone knows if this is a problem that can be fixed with out replacing the whole panel, please let me know.

edit: fw is now aa0209pn.

Mine too, let us know when you figure what was updated.
thanks for the updated firmware info. I went ahead and updated it immediately after seeing your post..lol. its probably just updates to the content stuff like netfilx, etc. its cool they are still sending them out but unfortunately never were able to fix the hdmi handshaking issues with their tvs. (it will eventually turn off and on at this point) I love the picture though!

I applied the most recent firmware update. Took about 10 minutes. I did not see any difference in internet content.

Even though I was able to download/install the firmware update I continue to not be able to use any of the internet applications (such as Netflix). 2 or 3 firmware updates ago I was using them fine, then after about 0204 they just spin. The Yahoo widgets work but none of the internet apps can connect.

Mystery to me so I purchased an Apple TV to provide internet content - works great.

I posted over here as well. Can't believe Sony still rolls out updates without any documentation posted: http://community.sony.com/t5/Television-General/Firmware-Update-List/td-p/103393

love the non-response
relax people. we get the update 1st since our tv is connected to internet, then the update is posted (also as manual download) to the sony site with a different last letter on the version I believe, and that's when the detailed information is posted. this all takes 5 months judging by last time.

i'm relaxed, the guy above you said it was "urgent".

ha, it's not really an urgent matter, but it would be nice to know sometime in the near future.

i would think a week or 2 is more than enough time to update the website with the info.

I completely agree.

My XBR9 shows no sign of picture anomalies except that blacks are very uneven (one corner is noticeably lighter than the rest of the panel). I honestly had just chalked this up to poor quality control. However, I'm curious if this unevenness could be a panel anomaly that is covered by the extended warranty?

Assuming for a second that it is, I bought my TV through eBay. I have my receipt, but the seller was not an authorized dealer. Does anyone know if the extended warranty is only available for TVs purchased new from authorized dealers, or does it apply to any TV with a legit serial number regardless of purchase details?
