VuDu? No! It wasn't coming before Christmas!

Glad I made sure to wake up early today to read all of your responses. Now, I'm gonna go check this stuff out.

The PQ looks amazing...

So how do I activate my box? When I am ready to purchase a title? I'd like to do the test movie but cant find it.

Well, yeah, but how do I get those numbers?

I just updated to the new vudu firmware (BD.8.08.526.B), mostly in hope of improved playback (not vudu itself)...
it's a big step BACK.
NONE of my MPEG2/MPEG4 video files will play back now: they all say "unsupported audio codec". This did NOT happen before the firmware update.
DIVX & MKX files that worked before (incl ffwd/rew) DP still work fine, which is good...
but all my AVCHD camcorder files, HD MPEG2 HDV camcorder & Tivo HD MPEG files, are now broken.
Audio codecs include MPEG Layer2 (for HDV MPEG2), DD 5.1 (AVCHD, Tivo HD files), DD2.0 (DVD MPEG from DV AVI), etc. All worked before fine.
NOT happy!! (Reproduced this on both PC CIFS streaming & USB playback.)

That said, the update apparently fixed my ffwd/rewind hang issues on two BD titles, Galapagos & Earth: The Biography.
Don't know if it fixed for video files also, since they don't even play back now :-(

Update (noted below): reverting back to .498 firmware (downloaded from website, update via USB) and the video playback works as before.

I've done the update and watched some previews, so vudu seems to be working seamlessly. However, I don't have a vudu.com account, and to set one up the site requires an activation code. I don't see where the BD390 would generate one. In setup, there is a "deactivate vudu" option, but that's it. I haven't tried renting directly from the BD390, but I assume a vudu account would give me more functionality?

Cool...just got update for bd390, and now watching Bionicle:Legend Reborn in HDX. Sharp picture, DD+, with chapter selection. No stuttering so far, no dropouts or lip synch(kinda hard to tell since most characters don't have lips!)
I already have Vudu box/account so was able to activate with code provided and they provided $5.99 credit for one title. So far, looking pretty good.
Wonder if angle icon issue for Trek:TOS series is corrected...nope.

click on 'First HD Movie Free" and activate an additional device on your account with the code it gives you

And your first HD movie is on the house... Nice...

Someone asked earlier about testing out Vudu without renting or buying. If you have a fast internet connection their is an HDX selection called 'Experience HDX'. Not being on vudu right now (cant' wait until I get home from work) it looks like you can download it for free.

Hi All,
this is strange. The option to
update is not coming up automatically like
it always does when there's a new update.
I know I'm connected as I just downloaded a netflix.
Is the server maybe too busy?

Thx

But, seems like for new account setup, you have to do a $20 minimum deposit(/refill amount)?
That means I have to watch at least that many movies, can't only watch 1-2 + free one? ugh.

after you activate Vudu, click on the trailers and select one:

it keeps playing all trailers continuously (at least so far)
Couldn't find HDX demo or qwyzx Disney/Touchstone demo..at least trailers in 1080p HDX & DD+ 2.0..some in 1.0

I've been sure for 99.9% that they are going to screw something up. So much for taking their time to come up with a clean update. LG still has a previous version on their website. Try to roll back. Interested to know if they allow that.
Ahh, so after turning off my player and turning it back on VuDu is not prompting me for a free rental. All setup now
post #2388 of 6863
Wow! HDX is fantastic. Watching trailers for various films and you would be hard pressed to tell its not Blu-ray.
Do you guys notice a difference between HD and HDX PQ?
Is this Vudu update only for the BD390? The 370 is not listed on the Vudu site, and I'm not home to check.
For the trailers, I give HDX the slight edge...Avatar looks cool!

Audition on Blu-ray Problem -

Sigh. Apparently I can't hear any dialog while listening to the film via DTS MA or TrueHD. The dialog is so low that I have to put my ear up to the front speaker to hear anything. Switch the 2.0 stereo and I can hear dialog just fine. Tried rebooting playing etc. with no luck. Tried switching tracks via the menu...nothing.

Bummer. But for me the 390 is not worth the 2.3x cost (I got the 370 for $129).

Could someone using the Sony Soundbar (CT100) confirm that it is possible to get 7.1 LPCM output when playing a blu-ray disc. Thanks

The only way you will get 7.1 on your soundbar from a 5.1 source (most Blu-rays) the soundbar must have the ability to matrix the surround-back channels into the mix. For instance, I have a Denon receiver and I set the receiver to apply Dolby Pro-Logic IIx on all 5.1 sources. This way I get sound out of all my speakers.

Yes, I previously downloaded the .498 firmware, and it's still up on the website for now-

Copied the .ROM file to USB, stuck it in, and updated (downgraded) OK.
Files play back fine again now... phew

For some reason the new Denon receiver's are having compatibility issues with the BD390 and the JVC. The issue is that when the players are set to bitstream (Primary Pass-thru) there are audio drop-outs or no audio during playback of True-HD and DTS-MA tracks. The work-around is to set the player to PCM Multi-CH so the player decodes the audio and then transmits the audio to the receiver as Linear PCM. Your receiver will only display Multi-Channel on the front display and not DTS-MA or Dolby True-HD. Theoretically bitstream and LPCM should produce identical audio streams.

Well well well.... Allow me to be among the first to say how pleased I am that LG got the Vudu update out in a reasonable amount of time from their originally announced date. Thus far, I've been quite impressed with what I've seen of it personally, but am somewhat troubled (yet not totally surprised) to hear people have already been having some issues with it, not even one full day out from its release. Will pass along further thoughts as they come, but so far so good in my hands.
