BD370/390 LG Blu-ray player Master/Owners thread - Page 89

I just got my BD390 last night, I made sure not to download the latest firmware because I wanted to try playing mkv files on it. I attached a USB hard drive to it but it doesn't seem to see the attached hard drive. (power light is on, on the hard drive) It found my media server and played avi files.. but it didnt see any of the mkv files that I have. Do I need to rename my MKV files or convert them? where can I find the roll back update? Do I have to format my hard drive a different way?

Since it didnt play mkv files anyways, I decided to upgrade the firmware to watch some vudu. and I must say it looks nice (HDX) but I was only getting 1 green bar, I am connected through a belkin n++ router, I will directly connect it to the modem to see if i can get more bars or even the blue bar people are talking about. BTW I have a g10 and Amazon OD gets 4 blue bars on my current setup.. So far liking the BD390, thanks to everyone on the forum, reading posts helped me choose the right tv (50G19) and the right BD player (BD390).

I am seeing BD370/390 being offered as region free @ premium. Is there a easy region free hack out there?

does this LG play back bd-r and bd-r dl fine?
How is the LG BD390 if you are using component (55" Mitsubishi rear projection CRT) and multichannel analog (Rotel 1056)? I would love Netflix, but are the Pioneer's a significant upgrade for analog video and audio?

It works great on my Mitsu WS55805 55" RPTV over component...
I have it and my HD Tivo S3 both connected via Impact Acoustics 3play component/toslink switch, works well.
I can't see any PQ issues or differences; hard to compare PQ between the two... except one case:
I compared Planet Earth from HD Tivo and the BluRay disk, the BD version looked MUCH nicer but that was obviously mostly an issue of bandwidth (very busy detailed scenes retained their resolution, and better color, rather than macroblocking etc)

I am connected via 5.1 analog out to an old JVC receiver, it does have some level controls on analogs, nice...
it does sound better (clearer, more headroom/"wide" sound) w/ analog vs DD5.1 regular or downconvert via optical (I have no HDMI), but I have fairly old chintzy speakers and am not really an audiophile.
I don't know about the Pioneer you speak of to compare.

They are extremely small and I do use them in the three LGBH200 units I have since that is the only way for it to have profile 2.0 capability.

I have a BD390 arriving this week.

Could someone please tell what version of firmware I should be looking for that has .mkv network streaming?

If i remember correctly the latest code breaks some of this functionality.

I have an older Arcam AVR100 receiver which is heavenly in 2-channel and still provides great, clean 5.1 power for movies. However, it doesn't have any of the newest codecs. I was previously using a Sony Blu-Ray player (I forget which one) via SPDIF. It was very pretty, but the audio wasn't a setup at all from DVD. I just got the 390 yesterday and hooked it up via analog outputs. Our first movie was Drag Me to Hell.

It. was. awesome.

Even my wife noticed the huge improvement in audio... clarity, separation, dynamic range, you name it. I don't know if the Pioneer would be even better, but I can tell you that the LG has definitely breathed new life into this otherwise-very-capable receiver!

By the way, I'm using HDMI for video so I can't comment on Component output. However, even though my 720p projector can accept a 1080p/24 signal... I found that setting the 390 to the projector's native 720p offered the sharpest result. That was not the case with my old Sony. Hope that helps...

Thanks for the info on analog outs. I am strongly leaning to the LG BD390.

I saw an advertisement from PC richards that listed Pandora radio as one of the features of the BD370. I dont see that any where else so I assume it is a typo.

I wish that were true, b/c that is the only thing that I really miss from the Samsung BD-P1600 that I returned to get a BD370.

No Pandora for any of LGs stand alone Blu-ray players, only their HTIBs with Blu-ray built-in.

How about this 14-inch extension cable, Aaron? They're fairly pricey (~$12-15), but may well be worth it simply for aesthetic reasons. The cable and head are also matte-black, which should blend in as well.

<<Would this be a better player than Oppo's or about the same? i know the price is less but how is the processor?>>

Here's my solution: BD390 for BD PQ and streaming + Oppo DV983H for DVD/upconversion/multiregion/esoteric audio. Golden. Of course, since Oppo in their Infinite Wisdom discontinued the 983H, you'll need to haunt eBay and audiogon to make this work.

watched my first movie on Vudu, The Wrestler in HDX, 5.1 DD+...sound and picture were excellent but 2 buffer events that were quick...Hopefully that gets fixed...Looking forward to the 99 cent daily flix...

No matter what it sticks out of the front. The USB slot has a cover that hangs off. Plus the USB drives I have really don't stick out much farther than that right angle adapter would.

It's not a big deal for me. It's just something I would change if I could. The player is super fast. As fast or faster than the discs I tested with the PS3 slim, so that alone makes the player a great deal. But with the other features it really makes me overlook that USB port. I'm fine for just using the USB port for firmware updates.

Watched "Away we Go" with the wife last night and picked HDX as the format. Whenever I put the movie on pause the box was SD with all the bars lit and the audio was only stereo. Anybody know if this thing automatically downgrades your purchase based on bandwith? Picture looked like upconverted DVD and not usual HDX but since nothing was stated I'm not sure. If anyone knows the policy please chime in.

Great comments..thanks.

Getting a new BD-390 and want to add new hardware to my network.

I can use CAT5 or CAT 6 about a 75ft run...if I use wireless its through about two wall and a big media unit....so I think hard wire will be best?

My questions is.....which "N" dual router has proved to be the most BD-390 friendly, it seems that belkin N, Dlink 825 and others seem to have issues?

Am using OUTLAW surround sound pre amp and amp, will use optical audio connection, Dish Network with VIP622DVR.

Thanks in advance for any input

Oh yes does the BD-390 use 2.4 or 5g wireless?

Get wired. Much better, even played my high-bandwidth HD MPEG2's flawlessly, no buffer. Once you got wired there, you're set for any future networked equipment as well (via cheap switch etc.) Use monoprice for cat6, cheap & good.

The BD390 only uses 2.4Ghz N, and it's not that strong either..

I have a BD370C connected to a Yamaha RX-V992 receiver via optical digital output. All audio formats (Dolby Digital, CD, WMA, etc.) play without problem except for MP3 encoded media.

When playing media encoded with MP3 audio (music or video from either disc or USB), sound comes out for a split second and then goes to silence. If I pause playback and then resume play, again sound comes out for a split second and then dies.

I have audio set to SPDIF Primary Pass-Thru and Sampling Freq. set to 48KHz as they should be for my receiver's capabilities. I have also tested the other available audio settings for trial purposes. If I use an analog connection between the units, MP3 audio plays without problem.

I do not believe the receiver is causing the problem as it is able to play MP3 audio via digital optical input from my Pioneer Elite DVR-65H.

The BD370 was purchased yesterday and I did run the software update successfully.

Class? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Edit: Never mind... Simple oversight on my part

So, is anyone using a beta Windows 7. If so, does that help with playing video wirelessly from the computer to the 390. Still trying to see if I can play my LG GGW-H20L (plays both HD DVD & Blu-Ray writes BD) that is hooked up to my computer. In other words GGW to computer to TV. Maybe I will be able to do it and just skip the 390? Though, if I do that, the BD quality won't be as good, but I would be able to watch my HD DVDs without a wire.

Or will there be other advantages to windows 7 in regards to the 390?
How is the 370 at upconverting?
I've currently got a oppo OPDV971H which seems to do a good job on my 720p JVP DLP.
