BD370/390 LG Blu-ray player Master/Owners thread - Page 97

If you hit "marker" (just below the down arrow) you should see the time left I believe. Except I think that's only on commercial dvds
post #2882 of 6869
Received it this morning, had it up and running in about 5 minutes. Took me another 5 minutes to get online wirelessly -- I couldn't remember my password.

Watched youtube first and that was a blast. Next was netflix and it was a little strange. When it first downloaded a message appeared that said that my connection was slow and did I want to proceed. I said yes and the picture, which should've been high def was not and really grainy. I fast forwarded it for a second and it started steaming in HD and the picture was absolutely great. The crazy thing is this same thing happened every time I started a new netflix.

On to VUDU. HDX is unreal. I couldn't believe that any streaming video could be so great. I signed up for an account and it very painless. I purchased Departed for .99 cents in HDX and much, much to my suprised it started steaming right away. I thought that it took a few hours to download, but no it was good to go.

I started to watch a blu-ray movie -- Transformers 2, but was having so much fun streaming that I quit a few minutes into the movie.

I had roku prior to this and I can't tell you how great this upgrade is. I can't get over the fact that you can get all of this for such a reasonable price.

It's way late now and I will watch a blu ray on Sunday as afterall that is the main reason I got it. By the way it replaces a Samsung 1500.

Actually it is not 'marker' but 'search' key - both under cursors. Unfortunately it is not just number but timeline. Nevertheless you can easily to find-out where the position of movie is and how big part left. Current position is presented there with numbers - as well as total length of the movie
post #2884 of 6869
And when you pause many BD titles a bar comes up showing you the total length of the film and how much time has elapsed so far.

I know Transformers 2 had that.

I just posted my reading a day or two ago, you might want to read a few pages back to find out more about what people are getting for quality.

Call Netflix and LG about the slow connection message. The more people complain about it the sooner they will get their heads together and solve it. So far each party is blaming the other for it. The rewind or fast forward trick seems to get around it though. I agree that this unit is awesome overall for the price paid.

Thanks for the tip.

I installed .527 firmware just a few days ago (skipped .526). So, I used .498 for almost 2 months pretty much every day and never ever seen slow connection message. After your post I tried Netflix and got the message. To test I "downgraded" my player back to .498 and still getting this message. So, I think something happens on Netflix side.
Have to admit, even so it's annoying it's not a showstopper: I'm getting this message only once after turning the player on. After using that FF/RW trick I never see it again.

That is interesting..sounds like Netflix may be the guilty party. Like you said though using FF/RW fixes it so it's not a big problem. Netflix HD quality is better than I expected it to be...not as good as VUDU for sure..but quite watchable.

I will contact Netflix as soon as possible.

add another user to the list ..just done the new update download and have the you internet is slow message....with 4 bars!!!....then skip and let the 390 re buffer and I get 7 bars....
Anyone have a good set of recommended dvd ripping settings for using with the LG's network streaming? Space is obviously not a problem -- I just want to get the best quality possible.

My BD 390 arrives tomorrow! I will be connecting the HDMI directly to my Pioneer plasma and sending audio to my trusty Yamaha receiver (pre-HDMI) via optical cable. In my current setup, I have to mute the Pioneer's audio when I use my 6.1 surround setup because there is a very slight delay which creates an annoying echo effect. My Yamaha does not have an audio delay/sync feature. Does the BD 390?

If you are wondering why I want to run the audio from the Pioneer as well as the surround, I find that it is easier to pick up soft dialogue this way.

Do you mind to do an experiment?
when you first fire up the player it will offer to upgrade a firmware -> cancel that -> try Netflix -> check if you get that slow connection message -> report back to us. Thank you.

Regarding your audio sync question: no, 390 doesn't have an explicit audio sync control.
I have sometimes problems with some dialogs: but I increased center speaker level by a few dBs and it solved my problems without echo effect.

I watched 8 episodes of Harpers Island though Netflix and everyone time it say 'slow connection'. I still played, paused, rewound, pressed play and would get full HD. This starting happening Wednesday, Monday I watched 3 episodes and it was full HD all the time. When was the last update? (the one that fixed he VOB stuff?)

I'm now proud to call myself a new owner of the 390. I went from the JVC model to this one after some issues with the JVC. So far, so good with the LG!

Mine also comes tomorrow, why are you not using the the analog outs? I'm pretty sure optical will not give you the lossess addio [correct me if I'm wrong please] My Yamaha is also HDMI free and the main reason for getting the 390 was the fact that the analog outs sounded very good and that I can get the lossess HD track on BD's. You don't need any specail cable, I'm using an old componet [5-rca] which should work just fine. I really think you should consider this also for the audio out.

If I cancel the update to do the experiment, will I be able to update later? If so...how?

I still have FW version 465, haven't update since I bought my 390 about 3 weeks ago. I never saw the Netflix slow connection message till a few days ago. If I FF, RW or just stop and resume the Netflix movie, I get back my full video quality from that point on. Cycling power to the LG would bring back the Netflix slow connection message again.

But of course. SETUP > OTHERS > SOFTWARE UPDATE >

I do this on a regular basis, since for some reason I've never been alerted to an update by the 390, which I've had for about two months.

Just learned about this amazing machine and read this very helpful thread full of great info. I have one question I haven't been able to answer from previous posts (sorry I didn't search the entire thread but did read through the last 4-5 pages) and I couldn't find it in the owners manual either.

I understand that Netfilx streamed audio is just 2.0 stereo, but am wondering what level of audio the BD-390 delivers when playing a DVD from a local media server -- e.g., via Tversity. Does it do full DD and DTS at 5.1 or is it limited to 2.0 stereo?

Thanks in advance. I'm ready to buy and "chomping at the bit."

I believe this clearly shows something's going on on Netflix's side.

Netflix is usually the guilty party but they won't admit it. When Vista SP1 came out, Netflix would not work and they kept telling me it was Microsoft's (Media player) fault but it didn't get fixed until Netflix release it's newer player.

Bought the BD390 today.
OOTB SW BD.8.08.465.B
Mfg date August 2009.

Played Narndia Prince Caspian, an AVS rated tier 0 ref quality BR. Outstanding PQ on my LG 55 LH90 TV. 1080/24p capable. Set the player to Auto/24p. TV Info shows 1080/24p.

Cannot get this player to output 1080/24p on SD DVD, tried LOTR, Contact, Day after Tomorrow. No luck. TV shows 1080/60p

Upgraded to SW DB.08.8.527.B over my 1 GB hardwired network. 5 Minutes.
1080/24p still does not work for SD DVD.

The LG TV came bundled with the LG BD270 which does do 1080/24p for SD DVD as does the Panasonic BD60.

Help, what is wrong here. An early post on this thread stated that the BD390 would do 1080/24p for SD DVD.

Spoke with Netflix this evening about the "slow internet" message....they say they are working to correct it...so is not an individual problem it probably all of us...or those with the new update.

Just placed an order for BD390 on BuyDig. Amazon showed a long wait time.
I have non HDMI Yamaha receiver so I will be using 7.1 analog out to the receiver for HD audio. I want to know what kind of cables to buy for the connectivity between the player's analog out and the receiver's 7.1 in (I only use 5.1 speaker setup though) . **Thanks**
post #2909 of 6869
I've been puzzled with the slow Netflix message as well. Glad to get some insight here. I tried changing the DNS settings and that seemed to help, but it could be a similar reset like the FF/REW workaround and not a real fix.

I'll call to keep the heat on Netflix.

Regular RCA cables (red, white and yellow) work just fine.
