After some setting up last night, all I gotta say is WOW!!!
I am coming from a PS3 and I gotta say this player is FAST! This is THE player to own. Got the latest update and got VUDU up and running and I gotta say, AMAZING! 1080p 24 STREAMING, amazing! I tested some movie comparing them to my Blu-Rays, identical!!! I am VERY impressed by VUDU, just not there pricing. That is something that they have to work on. Netflix is also great... As long as you have a good connection. Wi-Fi N, pretty good, I think I have a crappy router but... Was getting 1-2 bars on HDX on VUDU and about half bars on Netflix. I wish I could run Ethernet but not at the moment...

Equipment being used...
50" Pioneer KURO PRO-111FD
LG BD390
Linksys WRT160N Wireless N Router

Pro's
Quiet Compared to PS3
VUDU Support
Netflix Support
Wireless N
Awesome Picture quality
FAST disc loading/Menus
TONS of File types supported

Cons
Remote (I mean come on LG)

All I gotta say is I'm VERY pleased with this player.

BTW Anyone have a really GREAT router they would recommend to pair with this player??? Also anyone else have issues with Sandisk USB thumb drives? Mine won't read it at all...

I'm currently using a DLINK DIR-615 wireless-N router with my 390 which with a few connection issues works fairly well. But I can clearly see the need for upgrading to something with a larger wireless-n range and stronger signal strength down the road since the router's 2 floors above and opposite side of the house to where the 390's located. Any suggestions appreciated!

I've had no issues using a D-Link Extreme N Duo Dir 855 router (see this post for more info).

Now the field is narrower than I would like but it still has no problems at a 45 degree angle to the side.

I thought it was rather obvious it might exceed two feet. All I know is I have tested over three dozen players (at least three BD390s) and it has been the only remote that didn't work at all in the dedicated theater (bouncing the signal off a chair to the front of the player). Every other remote has worked fine. I tried using it in the den and got tired of having to aim it. Again I replaced it with a universal remote and all was good.

I'm guessing this problem is caused by the presence of the U3 software on the USB drive.

Remove it: http://www.u3.com/support/default.aspx#CQ3

I see VUDU has its internet apps on the Mits TV and its own box. Any way these would ever come to the BD390

So no one has ripped their own DVDs to MPEG2 to play on here?

I have tried. I could never get any MPEG-2 to work.
VOB's work but you can't FF/RW
So I settled on converting DVD's with Handbrake using the latest SVN to make MKV's with AC-3 or DTS.

I have. Used DVDfab to rip to HD and DVD shrink to combine the files, then rRenamed the .VOB file to .MPG and it's ready to go.

I have used this process for a while to rip my DVD collection to HDD so I can pull to my TiVos to play. I have been looking for the best streaming solution for my theater room (minimal TV watching) and did not want to spring for another HD-Tivo just for this.

As cgould mentioned, the only issue is that ff/rew do not work (have to use the SEARCH function)

Maybe a Dlink DGL4500.

Why do you reaname the VOB's to MPG?

another VERY satisfied customer so far with this player. Boot-up speed and Blu-ray loading speed is outstanding, and the image quality is fantastic as well.

I've also been experimenting with the BD390 as a DLNA client, over a WiFi network, and that's worked flawlessly as well. Have tested it with WMP11 on WinXP Pro as the server, as well as TwonkyMedia server on WinXP Pro. Next step is to test it with Win 7 acting as the DLNA server. Stay tuned...

My ONLY gripe so far: The BD390 does not seem to work as a DLNA "push media" client. It'd be fantastic to be able to push content to the BD390 from a PC, to get music to start playing on the BD390 without having to turn on the HDTV and navigate to the tunes using the BD390 remote. It'd be much easier to sit at my computer, say on Win7, and use the "Play to" feature on Win 7 to send a stream to the BD390.

Has anyone been able to get "push" to work between a BD390 and a DLNA server? Or if it really isn't supported right now (which seems the case), have you heard of any possible firmware update to enable the feature?

FYI, I spent some time on the phone with LG support last night trying to answer the above, but the poor level 1 support guy had NO IDEA what I was talking about...

Hey guys. I have a Linksys WRT54G-L router running tomato firmware for my wireless network. I've read about people using similar routers and setting them up as wireless bridges (I think they need DD-WRT firmware) to give wi-fi access to things that normally need a proprietary wireless dongle. Could I use one of these routers to give wireless access to my BD360, Xbox360, and Samsung LN46B750 tv? Anyone here have any success with that and their LG blu-ray player?

Should not be a problem. I am running DD-WRT on a WRT54G set up as a wireless bridge. It supports a Samsung 2550, Dish HDDVR and my Popcorn Hour with no problems. I don't think adding the peripherals you suggest would be a problem

Anyone using the BD390 to stream HDX VUDU using wireless N??? If so how did it perform? Lots of pauses or smooth playback? I get 2 sometimes 3 bars when streaming HDX... Or should I just get the Ethernet cable out???
Thanks!

I haven't tried it with wireless N, but wired, on my gigabit network, HDX VUDU has no problems for me.
Although I did initially need to set the DNS servers to what FIOS uses.

Also can you start watching the movie right away or do you have to wait??? The preview part starts right away, is that how the movie is or do you have to wait?

When do you guys think LG will start streaming movies from Blockbuster.

What settings did you use on Handbrake to allow the MKV to work?

I had to install AnyDVD to be able to read the DVD at all, due to encryption. Once you have the MKV, are you copying it to a USB drive and playing it that way, or are you able to stream it from a computer?

Make sure you have the handbrake svn2907

Select "High Profile" on the right.
Just below the output select MKV
Go to "Video" tab. Use "Constant Quality" and move slider to ~71%
Go to "Audio" tad and remove the audio track in the bottom window. Then go to "Source" and select a track. In "Audio Codec" select "AC3Passthru" if AC3. Or "DTS Passthru" if DTS. Then click the "Add Track" button.
Everything else can be default of that High profile.

I stream these from my PC. They look great at these settings.
Oh and make sure you select the correct title just under the start button.
Ok, now I can see the video on my TV (1280x720 DLP) but the aspect ratio is wrong. I'm using the movie Contact, which is 2.35 but Handbrake says it is 1.78. I tried all of the anamorphic settings, including off and setting the width/height to 1280x720. The picture is always a bit squished.

When I view the video on my PC it is correctly expanded to 2.35. Is this a problem with my TV or is there something I can do on the player or Handbrake to compensate for it?
Success! I found the setting on the BD390 for 16x9 Original. It was set to 16x9 Full, which must have been messing with the aspect ratio of the image.

Now the Handbrake created (via AnyDVD unlocked) MKV file shows up correctly, using H.264 encoding and passing the DolbyDigital audio.

My wireless N router gets 1 bar for HDX but it almost never has a hiccup or problem (using 5mb DSL). I don't know if the PQ gets better with more signal/speed but my PQ is between Dish Network HD and Bluray.

VUDU BX100 owner here.

Advantages over the Vudu box:
===================

Instant HDX playback. Beautiful HDMI 24p picture.

Better preview page with critiques and dual scores

DD+ streaming

Interrruptions handled with instant play as opposed
to having to hit Play on the Vudu box.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Disadvantages:
=========

No Vudu Labs ie no Pandora, SUCKS MEGA (Vudu's Pandora
implementation only one i found that is functional without the
minuscule menus in Samsung players)

No buffering. Don't get me wrong, it only buffers seconds, so on
a slower Saturday night connection you get interrupted a lot.

Annoying message comes back and back over and over again
"Would you like to switch to a lower rez format?" after 2-3 interruptions.

Useless WiFi, did not even detect my network, really internal antenna sucks. I use a WRT54GL with Tomato firmware and 9 dB dual antennas bridged to the main router.

If the next firmware would address these issues, until then i am keeping both boxes, the old one goes to the living room.

As for Netflix, it looks infinitely better on my ancient HTPC with Nvidia GTX260,
in other words player works well as a transport but scaling of odd resolutions not
the best.

Here's my current setup:

Sony Bravia W4100
Denon AVR1610
LG BD390
Energy Take 5 Speakers w/o sub

I just got everything set up or so I thought... I put in a blu ray movie. The movie trailers showed up as Stereo sound? And then the featured movie as well.. Tried setting the actual Blu ray player audio setting from PCM Stereo to Primary Pass Thru and the the trailers went into Dolby Digital and then when the movie started the audio went to DTS HD Master Audio but I could BARELY hear anything. What's going on? Any ideas?

To play nice with TiVo desktop, which serves the files up to the TiVo.

How does the 390 turn DD 2.0 into DD 5.1?
I stream a MKV I made of Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii which is definatly in DD 2.0. Confirmed by many programs including Media Info and TSMuxer. Yet when I stream this DD2.0 MKV there is sound from all speakers. My Denon reciever is in DD mode and can not matrix a DD stream to 5.1. It seems like the 390 is maxtixing the DD2.0 in a 5.1. Is that possible? It did sound good. The 390's OSD says DD 2channel.

Starting to wonder about the 5.1 VOB's I stream that the OSD says always says DD 2channel or DTS 2channel. I get 5.1 when playing those too.
Try it.
I just got the BD390 and I have 2 DVDs that have problems when I view them using the component outputs.
On Seven Year Itch and Dr. Zhivago, the entire movie the video has wide ghostly horizontal bars that roll vertically thru the picture. Sort of like the old NTSC broadcast days of 60 Hz beat noise. The picture also has some brightening/darkening pulse to it. Like the some TV had with the old Macrovision VHS machines. These effects are only seen on component output and I verified it on three different televisions. The effect is not seen on HDMI.

Also, these artifacts only show p when the output resolution is set to any of the progressive modes. It does not show up in the 480i resolution. This leads me to suspect faulty de-interlacing.

Has anyone noticed this?
