BD370/390 LG Blu-ray player Master/Owners thread - Page 123

I am gonna pickup the lg 390 player this weekend. With a bb coup. Hope this one has a better pic than my panny bdk30 does. Though I think the panny has a pretty good image. Giving my panny to my folks no problems with it since purchase. Hope this one serves me well also.

Just got a BD390 and I can do everything but play a video file back. All my shared media shows up but when I try and play it back I get a message saying "cannot play file" All I have to test with are sample media from my Win7 install and some OTA recordings through WMC. I've tried some .wmv and .wtv files and I get the same message over and over whether I use Windows Server or the Nero Server. Audio and Photos are no problem. Netflix and Vudu are not a problem. All security settings are off. Any suggestions?

Try a MKV or AVI.

Is there a way to fix that?

There should be a warning here about those limitations. I will try to put one on the customers feedback in Amazon, where I bought it.

You mean you didn't think for a minute it might be region locked before you ordered and chose not to do 5 minutes of research?

3. Has anyone been able to get a 390 to do a FW update from a USB file? If so, how? The instruction PDF on the support site doesn't seem to be accurate.

Thanks

BTW: Once I get Netflix to actually start playing a movie it runs w/o problems. It's only getting it to play initially that's the problem.

3. They are very accurate, but they have file name as

.ROM

and it's up to you to deduce that you downloaded a zipped file and you have to unzip it. They could be more explicit. After that it's a very smooth ride - been there, done it multiple times, never failed.

1. and 2. I believe there is a problem with your network, e.g., router. As you noted yourself a computer is much more sophisticated than 390 in processing
errors and time-outs. PPPoE introduces timeout while establishing a connection. You cannot change that, but a smarter router can help.

I picked up a 370 today from BB to try out. I already have a Samsung 1590 and Panasonic 60. I am trying to find a player that I like as much as the 60 but that has Netflix streaming. I hope the 370 is it.

I've only used the 1590 for a few days but I don't think I'll be keeping it. The fan is audble from across the room. I am using this in a bedroom so I want a quiet player. I was very happy when I plugged the 370 in. It is almost dead quiet. It is so quiet that I took the cover off to see if there is a fan. I was happy to see there isn't one! The drive is also very quiet. I only have a cd and dvd with me at work but I hope the drive is just as quiet with a BR.

If the PQ and overall performance is as good as the 60 then I'll be keeping it.

Any tips for when I install it? Should I update the firmware? If so should I do it online or use a cd/usb stick? I have had good luck updating firmware with the 60 and 1590 over the internet.

With direct access you'll be able to access all your songs regardless of how deep your file structure. But with direct access you won't be able to play all songs by an artist: you'll have to select album by album one at a time - well, it depends how your songs organized, but usually they organized like artist -> album. But the point is the same.
Playlist - even so DLNA access officially supports playlist you will have tough time to use them because 2000 limit and a folder for playlists is going to be empty. Direct access does not have an option for playlists.
3)Tiff's - no.
Jpeg's - yes resolution permitted. But, again, using DLNA you have 2000 limit. And a quality of pictures is terrible: simply unwatchable. With direct access - there is no background music option, but the quality is fine.

I'm using DLNA and have my music and pictures served to the 390 by TwonkyMedia running on my server (i.e. my old PC) and I have none of these restrictions/issues.

What server are you using?

Now that the price of these players are dropping I'm thinking about getting off the fence and jumping into the big Blu puddle. I have searched this thread and there is not a lot of input one a couple of questions I have.

1) How is the picture quality of SD-DVD's upconverted by this player?

2) How is the layer change of SD-DVD's? More than a second and it starts to bother me (nit picky yes) so a fast layer change is important.

Thanks for your answers, I know that these questions probably have been answered before but I greatly appreciate it.

Regards,

RTROSE

I've had firmware download problems on a fast line. I've got a 25MB FIOS connection and my 390 is hardwired to the router. The couple of times I've downloaded firmware it's taken a few attempts.

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I'm very interested in the BD390 player in the US but after 32 pages of reading, I just have to ask my question. Guess we'll see if I get it answered before I get to the final page.

Does this player allow .avi files encoded with xvid and not divx over the network or thru USB?

Thanks

Disregard my question.

Answer found on page 36.

I've had no problems with firmware updates with my BD390 and a FIOS 25mbs connection. The firmware updates were extremely quick and only took one try.

Tversity, Nero MediaHome Essential, WMP11, HP MediaVault.
Picture quality depends: Nero is fine, the rest - no, the most important "no" on MediaVault since it's NAS.
You don't have 2000 limit? You can see tiff's? You have one-of-a-kind 390. Good for you. Even LG doesn't have one. Where did you get it?

I had no problems with FW updating over 1Mbit/s connection - made it successfully 3 times.

If a user would like to see what the 390/370 can play try some of these:

Thanks for the feedback. Ptsenter - thanks for illuminating my "duh" moment on the FW file update.

Sproadic connection issue is due to the d-Link DIR-655 router that I use. Taking Ptsenter's suggestion I reasearched back in the thread and found comments about this problem with d-Link routers.

As it turns out, the problem is with the d-Link's DNS relay, but it isn't necessary to turn the relay off. You can leave it on for all the other devices on the network.

On the LG you need to provide your ISP's hard DNS IP addresses. If they've both a primary and secondary, use both. You don't have to do FW updates on the router (some of the later ones are pretty sketchy).

Thanks again.

It is a streaming box, it streams the HDX titles. You would need a VUDU box(BX100?) that has a hard drive to be able to download and view at a later time. And those are capped at a 4mbs download speed so it takes 4 to 5 hours for a typical HDX title.

You might try changing the DNS servers IP addresses in the BD390 menu. I set mine for what FIOS uses and it made the difference from it dropping down occasionally to never dropping from HDX.

Thanks Aaron!

Does anyone find the screensaver "auto-shutdown" a bit annoying? After like 5 minutes of inactivity, the players shuts itself down. I get the whole save energy thing and that we're in an economic recession, but it's an annoying feature... O_o

25mbps? How much you paying per month?

It's bundled in with TV and phone but I'd guess it's around $40/mo.

I'm finding your meaning hard to figure between all of the smilies.

I'm not familiar with this 2,000 limit. I've got almost 23,000 songs/MP3's. I'm using TwonkyMedia which in turn is using my iTunes xml file for its info. I don't have any folders with more than 2,000 entries but I would think if you did your organization isn't very good. With compilation support turned on I've got 931 artists so the second level would have a few more folders than that.

Don't really bother with tiffs but the picture quality from my jpegs (taken with a 7 megapixel Canon Elph) is quite good.

i just picked up the 370 last night, and installed the latest fw, i still can not play star trek, i had a samsung initially and it was having fits playing it so i bought this player and still cant play it, so im thinking i obviously now have a bad disc, is anyone else having problems with this disc

on a side note my samsung had issues with the two latest pixar discs as well which was another reason i switch and this player plays them now flawlessly

Mine is bundled with cell service and their Extreme HD tier for $125 a month.

Prior to my bundle I was paying $90 a month for the 50/20 tier, so I'm pleased with my price difference. Although I do wish the speed was 35/25 like they have in the NY/NJ area instead of the 25/15 they have here.

In the NY/NJ area they get what I have and the faster speed for around $105 a month.

I've searched this thread and haven't seen this issue posted. I apologize if I've overlooked a post. My problem is that when I play movie files (.avi or mp4) via Nero, Tversity or when directly connected to the USB port, the video plays, but there is no audio at all. Any suggestions?

I've run Star Trek through my 370 several times now. Also on latest firmware. Definitely no issues.

Same here. The first night I played ST was on whatever FW the unit shipped with. I got it updated the next day, and watched ST again, so it could very well be a bad disc.

This is the same router I use. My only problem with the 390 so far is trying to stream HD movies via Netflix. They stutter and I get no sound. I'll try another one of my routers today to see if that fixes the issue. Then again, I can stream HD trailers from Vudu just fine, so that doesn't really scream router issue to me. This is on a 10mb connection.

I noted a few other comments about HD issues as well. I couldn't comment since with a 1.5M DSL line I'm happy just to get movies streaming at all. We'll probably upgrade next year but will probably be stuck with DSL as FIOS isn't available in our neighborhood. Let me know if a different router gives any different results. Thanks

We attempted to watch Gone Baby Gone last night (from Netflix) and found that it kept freezing at the same spot in Ch 4 (about 21:00). I checked the disc and it was pristine - not a scratch on it.

Has anyone watched this disc successfully?
