BD370/390 LG Blu-ray player Master/Owners thread - Page 16

The hard drive was formatted in NTFS. The MKV files were all larger than 4 GB. I would say they averaged 8-9 GB each.

I did notice something recently. When I watched one of MKV files on my laptop, all the Subtitles that were expected to be available were available. When I played it on the BD390 US Version, only the English subtitle was available.

This is not normal. I have never seen it take longer than a couple minutes to connect to the server and see if there is an update available. When I updated my BD390 US Version, it took less than 10 minutes from start to finish (from connecting to server to player reboot, indicating final step of update).

How is the Blue Pic Quality on the new BD390 the old 300 model from last year had BLUE ray playback issues according to several reviews.
I was looking at the 370, but now the 390 sounds better. Is it true it has a better Video chip than the 370 is this why it is getting better reviews for Blue Ray playback than the 370? Anyone confirm this?

I was wonder if anyone has a BD390 if they could try some of these tests looking for bad blue ray play back. Sounds like so far they have all the issues fixed, but unless someone tries the test, we wont know for sure.

Also if anyone is seeing any Jaggies on ANY movie. Do they go away if you switch to 24p mode?

Thanks for responding about my software upgrade problem. After 2 hours of being locked up, I turned it off. When I turned it on, the original software was still running, and it said an upgrade was pending. I tried the upgrade again, and it hung again, this time while displaying "PREP" on the front panel display. Tried 2 more times with the same results.

At this point, I am thinking that maybe I have a defective unit that is not able to upgrade itself. Or maybe software upgrade 8.08 is simply a bad one and I should wait for the next upgrade.

I had trouble the first time I tried to do the update on my 390. That's when I turned off the internet on my laptop and the down load took about 10 minutes. Are you able to connect directly to the internet? Maybe that would help.

You should not wait for the next software update. I believe you said that you recently bought the 390. In this case, I would do any exchange and try the update again. I didn't have a problem with my update and you should not either especially for the price tag of this device.

I just got my 390 and hooked it up to my Mits 65" CRT RPTV. I have a question that I'm not sure there is a good answer to but thought I'd give it a shot. My TV has been professionally ISF calibrated with great results. I notice that the 390 has a surprising number of video adjustments including individual colors, contrast, brightness, etc. Is there any recommendation from anyone here as to what to set those at for a calibrated display? I'm not good at doing it by eye and I hate to lose the advantage of the calibration by having the 390 set innapropriately. Any advice would be appreciated.

Are the 370 and 390 identical in respects of load times and SD PQ? I believe the 390 can force 24fps, can the 370? I am starting to see a lot of similarities b/w the 390/370 and the new JVC player...

I picked up a 390 at BestBuy after reading a rave review on Cnet and another forum. The 390 is a reasonable performer at deinterlacing - better than Panny 55, but not as good as the JVC or Oppo. In terms of real-world content, it is very good, but not nearly as sharp and detailed as either the Pioneer 320 or JVC. It is clear that the JVC and the Lg 390 are close cousins. The JVC in my opinion offfers better out of the box SD DVD PQ, but the LG has much better PQ adjustments. The remotes are similar - both powered by a single AAA battery - would not be surprised if these were made in the same plant. The same power cord. Almost identical input/output layout. The GUIs are the same as well. They clearly share a lot of similar heritage. I am going to do some more tests, but at the moment, I think the JVC has the edge in PQ on SD DVDs (pioneer 320 and Oppo are superior to both). Although the JVC and LG share a lot of similarities, the LG offers a great deal more features in terms of tweaking, but the JVC does a superior job of deinterlacing film cadences in synthetic tests. I have a while before I will take it back to BB and will run some more tests in addition to synthetic material.

Just tried a MKV file on a BD-390. VC-1 - It said "No Supported Video Codec"

Anyone else have any updates on what this player will or will not play.

I've also tried TVersity - no transcoding ... nothing plays.

I picked up a BD-390 to compare with my player (BPD-05FD).. First thing i noticed with this LG is that that there was no way to turn oif the angle or display icons at all.. Next, i updated the firmware.. After playing several SD/BD titles i ran into contant lip sync issues, and this was in stereo going directly into my HDTV. I also noticed that when the de-interlacer didn't like something it displayed "brief combing", just like the old panny RP91's use to! Also worth a mention, is that the slide out SD/BD draw is made of light cheap plastic, and flexes easily if you touch it.. On the plus side, from what i could see, the SD picture was bright, clear, colorfull and sharp, and the zoom worked very well. Due to the lip sync issue, and no way to turn off the stupid pop up icons.. I will be bringing it back to Best Buy where it can sit with the other two open boxed BD-390's that were there when i picked this one up.

I will be returning mine tomorrow too; admirable successor to the LG BD300 (Which I found more gimmick than performance), but not worth the $350 as a purist's player in this marketplace. It's quick and reasonable in playback, but I found the $225 JVC equal save analogue outputs and netflix streaming.

I don't blame you for taking it back. Isn't it ironic how CNET just googoo's and gaga's about this player? They say it is the top rated BD player. What a bunch of garbage. I think that CNET's reviewer knows squat about BD players.

Update... After unplugging the BD-390 for a while, i was able to get the lip sync problem to go away.. Still won't be keeping though, due to having no way to turn off any of the stupid pop-up on-screen icons (like the angle, play, FF, RW, pause, etc).. How can someone design a player and leave that option out beyond me!!

coming in june. i bought the 3600 and will return it when the 390 comes out...lol

i suggest you do that. the 3600 is amazing, just not as many features as the 390

Can anyone talk about the playback of video files? officialy it supoorts :

But i wanna know, does it support mp4 , mp4/avc , h264, x264??? is is true that the player has trouble playing videos with high bit rates? i dont know what to do i really want this player but i might end up getting the ps3+ western digital wdtv player, what do u guys think?

I am looking for a relatively cheap Blu-Ray Player to go with my new panny plasma. The BD-370 seems like the way to go for me, as I want a low price point and netflix/youtube compatibility.

A few questions:

How does the youtube feature work? Does it bring up a search box that you have to type in with your remote somehow? Do you hook up a keyboard?

Are there any other players around that will do youtube and netflix for around this price?

Is there any reason i should try to stay with a panasonic player since my tv is also panasonic?

its funny you notice the lip sync issue, I thought I was the only one. I generally only see it with DTS tracks for some reason, and it doesn't happen all the time but it can be really annoying. Pausing or stopping the movie will correct it, but it sucks and hopefully gets corrected with a firmware update.

Firmware is a work in progress IMO. What I've been able to test on the video side is VOB = OK, MKV h.264 with 5.1 DTS = OK, MKV VC-1 = No Supported Video Codec.

The YouTube allows you to either browse or search... The search brings up an online keyboard, which you navigate with the arrow keys on the remote. It is a bit tedious, but it does offer suggestions as you type. I don't think you can view HD or HQ videos from YouTube.

The only other current player that I can think of is the Samsung BDP1600 - it has Netflix, but no YouTube. It has Pandora instead.

If you get a Panasonic Blu Ray player, you might be able to connect Viera Cast if both your TV and the BDP support it. It will make the operation of the two a little easier. I have never had this feature, so I can't say how useful or desirable it is. I don't think the Panasonic players have YouTube or Netflix, if I am not mistaken they do have Amazon On Demand.

Frankly I was disappointed with the quality of the Netflix streaming on the LG 370. I get a lot better results on my xbox 360.

I was going to pick up the 390 this weekend but after reading the last couple of posts I am hesitant. I have read about the Samsung 3600 and 4600 players and it appears they all have some issue. Some people love them some hate them. Any opinions on the Samsungs vs LG. Like the wireless since this will be going in livingroom and like the netflix. I stream now on my computer.

This is true, I found that out tonight, thats for your reply, I have been combing this thread for the correct answer, it will stream dvix files no problem. Any other filed I through at it from my external hard drive played like a charm, even the 12gig mkv files. Great player, but now what the hell do I do with my WD HD box. LOL. Thanks again.

I also just received mine yesterday from Amazon, and it could not find an update. I have the same software version as you. I was thinking something is not quite right, and it may have been a refurb or return because it had the latest software. Perhaps they are being shipped from LG with the latest software????

motospark, any of your mkv files contain some sort of HD audio? It's great that we've established that the BD390 can play AVCHD and mkv from an external HDD but now I'm looking for someone to tell me it can play something other than std. AC3/DTS and what audio cnnections are used (HDMI or analog)...
