BD370/390 LG Blu-ray player Master/Owners thread - Page 220

I updated to the latest firmware and when turning on the player I now get a blank screen.
The home screen with icons like YouTube, Setup etc no longer loads at the start.
However, when I load a bluray it plays fine and when I pause or stop the movie the home screen and icons come back.
It does this repeatedly and I have already unplugged and replugged the player and all connections.
Not sure if any of you have experienced the same and if you have any suggestions.

Updated to v.554b and the first disc I tried (Inside Job blu-ray version) to play turned the player off after loading and beginning to actually play the movie.

Similar to v.552.

Flashed back to v.544 and all is well.

Seems like LG's approach to support for older players now out of warranty is to make the less sophisticated owners believe their players are broken via software update. Having two updates (back to back) making the player unusable is utter BS.

I have the same problem with v.554b. I can no longer play a blu-ray. I went to the LG site to find v.544 but it is not listed there. How can I obtain the older version?

I contacted customer support via chat and was told me they would mail me the previous firmware and it would take 7-10 business days. After some discussion the support person agreed to email me v.552, which I now have and will test. LG's website definitely (and firmware testing) definitely needs some work.

Search back through the thread. At least a couple of us have posted previous firmware on download sites. Try this:

http://www.4shared.com/folder/C-BAh4Ja/_online.html

I never found 539 and the current version of 554 on LG's site is corrupt so you have to get that by player update.

As reported by another here, v.552 has the same problem. I went back to support and they emailed me v.542 (they do not have record of v.544). After flashing to v.544 I am able to again play blu-ray discs. It is very hard to believe that this kind of bug could be present in ANY release, much less in TWO SUBSEQUENT RELEASES.

Also, if you contact support through chat they will first tell you they have to mail you a disc (7-10 business days). Tell the agent to request permission from their supervisor to email you the firmware.

Is it possible to somehow stream an audio playlist through the bd390 without initiating it from the player's on-screen interface? My theater uses a projector and I would prefer to stream music without first having to fire up the projector. Currently I stream from TVersity running on Windows Home Server, but I would be willing to use a different streaming server if there was a way to do this.

After all the horror stories about poor updates really meant for more current players, I'm holding at v542 for my 390 with no problems. Granted I mostly play BluRay's and DVD's, some YouTube, and no BD live. I hide the upgrades when offered, and won't 'fix it if it ain't broken'.
The 542 causes problems with Warner BDs, namely skiping at seamless branching points, and BD Live is also not working. 554 resolves all these problems.

This week I have had several problems with some MKV files I downloaded.

On some cases I could solve it merging the files again, but on others I had to do a total re-conversion to a new mkv file, using Xilosoft video converter.

How can I identify an mkv file that can be potentially problematic on the BD390?

It should be noted that in all cases these files were networked from my PC with a wired interface. That's what I mostly use the BD390 for.

I just got the two-disc Apocalypse Now Special Edition, and neither disc will play, or even load. Player says, "Check Disc." My other blu-rays still play just fine. Any others with this problem? FW is the current 8.08.554.B.

Every time I've had "check disc" problems with my BD390, it has been due to either the disc being bad (Netflix sends a new one and it works fine), or my lens was dirty (run a lens cleaning disc through the player).

Try the latter first and cross your fingers. good luck!

The LG site now has a clean copy of 554 available for download.

When I get a chance I'll post it with the previous versions here:

I cannot figure out how to get rid of the icon for network that appears during playback of Blu-Ray movies and also Netflix streaming videos. Every few minutes or so, the icon appears in color in upper right corner, and then it changes to black and white before disappearing.

How can I get rid of this? I cannot find anything in the settings to help. I turned off blu-ray BD-Live but it did not help.

I've had the same problem. I think it's the audio codec that the file uses that makes it unplayable.

I keep on trying to reload it over and over again and most times it works

Updated my bd390 to 554b today and it no longer would play blu rays - green flicker after 15 seconds. My receiver is old and needs dts reencode. I turn that to pcm and it works. I grabbed 544 and downgraded to it, turned dts re encode back on and everything works again.

Not all that happy with LG

You may try a factory reset before updating again with the actual firmware.

Is there a way to go straight to a movie's menu and skip all the previews? Today I have to hit skip chapter button repeatedly, I just want to go straight to the movie to watch it.

Does anyone else see this issue of the "NETWORK" icon appearing during playback of Blu-Ray disks and Netflix on demand? Turning off BD-LIVE connection does not help.

Sorry, I've never even seen the network icon so don't even know what it looks like.

FWIW, mine is set up as:
wired network
fixed network parameters due to no-play of DNS relay between the LG and my D-Link router
BD Live off (BD Live disks always bring up nag warning about turning it back on)

I watch a lot of Netflix streaming and less so BD's but have never seen the logo.

If you are watching DVD, the Disc Menu button brings you to the screen where you can start the movie. For BD, it is the Title/POP-Up button.

Regarding the "network" icon: could it be that it was the camera angle symbol telling you that there are different angles you can switch between?

Best regards, maris

I'm using wireless, so perhaps a change to wired would help?

I do not think streaming netflix has camera angles, plus, on repeated playback, the icon appears at different points in the movie. If I pause when it appears, it still goes black and white and then disappears. I'm guessing it is some kind of warning about network connectivity being lost. Perhaps a wired connection would help.

Haven't found it yet; wish there were. Skip fails sometime also, and I have to FF thru each preview. Used to be that the Menu button did it on my old Sony, but no more on my 390. Maybe just start the DVD 15 min early & come back later?

yes. i have the same problem also.
what software do you use to mrege the files again?

Playback issues of MKV files can usually be attributed to header compression being turned on and your hardware does NOT support it. If you remux with mkvmerge gui, you can turn header compression off on the audio and video tracks and that will take care of it.

I believe MediaInfo will tell you if an MKV has header compression or not.

Hey Columbia,
That was an awesome tip.
I tried it on 2 of my mkv that wouldn't play and it worked!
Thanks!

Wanted to ask if anyone else has seen this problem.

Just decided to rewatch LOTR. This is a DVD set that I haven't watched since I got my BD390.

In chapters 23, 24 and maybe 25 of Twin Towers, the playback continually locks up and eventually fails. I took the disk to my old Sony DVD player and it ran fine.

Just in case I went back to .544 firmware (from .554) but that didn't help.

Has anyone else seen this? Found a fix perhaps?

I was having similar problems with the player freezing an hour or so into movies (but never at the same exact location.) Usually turning the player off, then back on fixed the problem, but it was annoying to have the movie viewing experience interrupted. I tried cleaning the lens with the Maxell disk, and loaded various firmwares, to no avail. Finally, I decided to change the "desk assembly" (basically the drive, $22 on eBay), and now my BD390 is working fine, with no more freezing. You may want to explore that option, if everything else fails.

Thanks for the tip. So far it's just LOTR that's hanging up, but I may give this a try if it happens on any others.
