PlayOnLinux --> http://www.playonlinux.com/en

It appears to be the free (as in beer) successor to Cedega.

I recently installed it on a Kubuntu 11.10 machine, and it pulled in Wine 1.3.something. It has wrappers for other Win progs, too (not just games). Admittedly, I haven't played around with it yet, but it looks good and comes highly recommended.

Quickstart for *buntu 11.10:
wget -q "http://deb.playonlinux.com/public.gpg" -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_oneiric.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install playonlinux
Have fun!

Play Classic DOS Games in Ubuntu via Chrome Web Browser Using NaClBox

...though this comment is laughable:

Classic Dos Games are the early 70′s and 80′s popular computer games played on DOS operating system. That was the era when DOS games on Star Wars ,

DOS was released in the early 80's, and the Adlib/Soundblaster cards didn't hit the streets until 1987 (Adlib) and 1989 (Soundblaster). These cards are what jump started DOS gaming for the masses.

The Golden Age of PC DOS games was roughly 1990 through the mid-late 90's, as it took until 1998 or so for DirectX and Win98 to stabilize Windows for gaming to surpass DOS.

For those of you who cut your teeth on the like of a C64 or Apple IIe you may remember the grandaddy of Fallout... Wasteland! Still considered one of the greatest cRPG's in existence.

The original team got the band back together and started a kickstarter for Wasteland 2. If it hit the $900,000 mark the game would be made. At $1.5M native Linux and OSX would be included.

Sure enough, the $1.5M goal has been reached! That means NATIVE (no Wine needed) support for Linux in a non-DRM format. If you are at all interested in supporting linux gaming you still have a time to get involved.

Keep in mind that supporting it means you are providing money up front for development. The tentative release date is October 2013. Details here:

Steam For Linux Will Launch In 2012

Gabe Newell has responded to an email asking if Steam for Linux will be released this year with the simple answer 'Yes.' That means at some point in the next 7 months anyone running Linux will be able to download Steam and start playing a number of games, including at least one Valve title (most likely Left 4 Dead 2). After that the emphasis will be on game developers to start porting their Steam games over to Linux. 2012 could be a great year for gaming on Linux. The news follows the revelation in April that Valve was indeed working on a Linux port of its digital games service. At the time though, and as with all Valve software, we had no idea when it would get released

EA Game Titles, Braid Most Popular Downloads on Ubuntu in May

As expected, the debut of Electronic Art’s freemium games on the Ubuntu Software Center made a big impact in May.

Both titles – Lord of Ultima and Command and Conquer - secure the top and second place in the ‘free’ apps top 10 following their much-hyped release last month.

Carmageddon: Reincarnation Linux Version Confirmed

Stainless Games has been fundraising for Carmageddon: Reincarnation, a modern day remake of the classic Carmageddon racing games, on Kickstarter for weeks. Stainless said that if they hit $600,000 in pledges before time runs out, they would commit themselves to creating a Linux port of the game, as well as a MacOS port. Today they made it official: the fundraising has come so close to netting $600K overall, with a few more hours left to go, that they are officially committing themselves to creating a Linux port of the new game. PC gamers will get to play Carmageddon 4 first, with a February 2013 release date. The MacOS & Linux versions will follow the PC version later in 2013.

Valve Software Launches Linux Blog, Confirms Work On Steam Client for Linux
Valve Software confirmed today in a new blog devoted specifically to Steam on Linux (called Steam'd Penguins) that for more than a year, a Steam client has been in the works for Ubuntu Linux 12.04. 'We've made good progress this year and now have the Steam client running on Ubuntu with all major features available. We're still giving attention and effort to minor features but it's a good experience at the moment. In the near future, we will be setting up an internal beta focusing on the auto-update experience and compatibility testing.' The blog post also says that a working port of Left 4 Dead 2 is currently playable, and that their goal is to bring performance in line with the Windows version

Steam’d Penguins

The Valve Linux Team

Our mission is to strengthen the gaming scene on Linux, both for players and developers. This includes Linux ports of Steam and Valve games, as well as partner games. We are also investigating open source initiatives that could benefit the community and game developers.

Initially formed in 2011, the Valve Linux team is currently 11 people and growing. Our mission is to investigate open source development with a specific focus on supporting Steam and other Valve products on the Linux platform. The Linux background of our team varies from those who have a deep knowledge of Linux development to those who have just scratched the surface. However, one thing we all share is a great passion for supporting all things Valve on Linux. If you share that same great passion and think you have what it takes to join our team, let us know!
The goal of the Steam client project is a fully-featured Steam client running on Ubuntu 12.04. We’ve made good progress this year and now have the Steam client running on Ubuntu with all major features available. We’re still giving attention and effort to minor features but it’s a good experience at the moment. In the near future, we will be setting up an internal beta focusing on the auto-update experience and compatibility testing.

Since the Steam client isn’t much without a game, we’re also porting L4D2 to Ubuntu. This tests the game-related features of the Steam client, in addition to L4D2 gameplay on Ubuntu. Over the last few months, excellent progress has been made on several fronts and it now runs natively on Ubuntu 12.04. We’re working hard to improve the performance and have made good progress (more on that in a future post). Our goal is to have L4D2 performing under Linux as well as it performs under Windows.
