Can it do that? Can it choose to switch Off if it finds a problem with playback? I would think that is what "Auto" is all about.

No. Once it switches to 24p it remains in 24p till you stop playback. Same for 60p, for that matter. The processor does a check for a few seconds when playback starts, then either switches to 24p or not.

They are aware of it, but I'm sure it just hasn't got to the top of the priority list yet.

When playing continuosly from the beginning, after track six it has to be forwarded manually to the subsequent tracks. After it finishes, I can't eject it without powering down and back up the player.

I have the SACD version and can confirm it plays fine.

Unfortunately it is OOP and is hard to find for less than $50.

I'm running the latest Beta firmware and found an issue:

T3: Rise of the Machines - when any bonus material plays, it does not go back to the menu when the bonus clip is finished. You just get a blank screen and every control shows up the little red crossed circle in the upper left corner. You have to stop the disc and reload to get back to the menu. Not a huge deal, but it plays fine on my PS3 and the Sony BDP-S350 I have on another HDTV.

Well, write an email to Oppo so they can identify the issue and fix it. I don't own this T3 Blu-ray yet, but I plan to in the future.

Styln, thanks for posting your listening impressions. I'm in the process of doing the same. Not sure how much appreciation you got at the time - audiophiles seem like an endangered species on this thread! - but I do appreciate all critical listening comments.

Folks have been pretty good. In fact, many are starting to listen to audio again for the first time in a long time because the Oppo sounds so good. Even Smarty carried the SACD logo on his posts for a while!

I've always been into "audiophile" listening more than home theater, but the Oppo has really gotten me back into dedicated and focused music listening after the "distraction" of high definition HT.

Broke out Genesis "Trick of the Tail" (DTS 96/24 5.1) and Keane's "Hopes and Fears" Dual Disc (DVD 5.1 MLP) and was thoroughly impressed. If the Oppo were only used for music, I'd be quite happy. This after owning dedicated CD players from Sony, Denon and Yamaha.

Since there are 500+ pages of discussion on the OPPO BDP-83 can someone who's read them all / kept up enlighten me in regards to any issues with the Oppo and playing certain titles?

My samsung 2500 can't play a few titles and it irritates the hell out of me and now I`m considering switching to the OPPO BDP-83 NOW. My priority invite expired, but I'll get in-line and order if it has no issues playing ALL titles.

I think we're pretty good on Blu-ray and DVD titles now (aren't we? Are there any discs that won't play at all?) People report issues with extras or specific audio tracks from time to time. DVD-A and SACD issues are being resolved with each new firmware.

Thanks Bill, have you played V for Vendetta, The Perfect Storm or Harry Potter #1 (all BR) in the oppo w/no issue? Those come to mind as the ones I recently have not been able to play (jitter/jump/freeze) in my current player.

Of those I've tried only Harry Potter and had no issues.

To date, I have played about 75 Blu-ray rentals and have bought a small number of discs: no failures yet.

Just updated to the new beta firmware. Some things I've noticed with the firmware upgrade process. If you use a FAT16 formatted USB the player locks up. It shouldn't lock up, it is easy to determine if a device can read a USB stick or not and should just pop up something saying it can't read it. Why doesn't the upgrade process realize that the firmware on the stick is already installed? I didn't remove the stick after the player shutdown after installation and it wanted to install it again. It should see that it is already installed and give an option to skip or reinstall.

Maybe it presumes you can follow instructions.

I confess I haven't been trying both FAT16 and FAT32 with each firmware. If this happens consistently you should report it to OPPO.


Isn't CANCEL one of the options in the dialog box?

The proper procedure is to remove the stick when the unit powers itself down.

If not the player takes a few minutes to read the firmware again and give you the option of canceling. The problem is just having to wait those few minutes. Same thing happens if you accidentally forget to remove the CD.

Is there a problem of the player trying to install the firmware everytime you insert the USB stick?
Hopefully the incompatible lockup problems will be fixed with future updates.

I haven't watched the whole movie but V for Vendetta and the special features all seem to play ok. (31-0620 beta firmware)

Just a quick note about Region 2 DVDs: after I applied the hack (for the 601 firmware; as stated, there is no new hack for the latest firmware release), I watched a bunch of stuff I had on R2. They NEVER looked so good; this player is INCREDIBLE. I know all the rights issues involved (thank you, Jack Vallenti you rotten...), but it would REALLY be something if down the line a legitimate firmware release would at least unlock the DVD portion of things. Just an observation, not a moan and groan (I'll save those for the appropriate threads, LOL!)

Has anyone gotten ANY indication that Oppo is working on support of lossless audio yet? Just wondering.

You mean for media files? OPPO rarely talks about futures.

If you are waiting for more media file support, I would say don't. Get a media server appliance or some other player. I have no inside info, but media files seem to be at the end of the queue behind Blu-ray, DVD and audio disc formats. Which is understandable.

I can confirm that, after more critical listening, I still do have pops with TLOL (my test SACD) and other SACD's. I had to play the problem tracks on the discs a few times, before the pops appeared - but, they are there.

So, it appears that the problem went from "all the time" to "highly intermittent". Latest F/W... Improvement, but not resolution.

As a sanity check to ensure that I do not have a faulty disc, I pulled out the 981 and played the problem tracks on that machine, many times, with no issues. My other SACD's also played on the 981, as they always have - flawlessly.

Come on new firmware update!!!! I'm going to jump back on the hardware bandwagon if this keeps up.

What are you asking? The BDP-83 handles all the current HD codecs.

File formats. FLAC or something similar.

Like what? They already support DVD-A (which is MLP, and lossless), as well as stuff like DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD, so I'm not sure what you're looking for.

If you're talking about FLAC or APE (for example), I wouldn't hold my breath. I say for $500, the Oppo is incredible value.

Did you do any comparisons of the Oppo vs. the Sony SCD-XA5400ES for SACD? Just curious

This is a very fine piece of A/V engineering. I'm so glad I waited to jump in to Blue Ray.

Some. Mostly via HDMI since the Sony has only stereo analog outputs.

Any thoughts? The SCD is still on my list for just audio. I also have the Denon DCD-CX3 which is stereo only but a good CD/SACD player.
