I only have the ouput set at 48kHz, I am not even trying to feed it the higher bitrates.

Not so much a second-generation player, but I wouldn't mind seeing Oppo come out with a lower-priced version of this model that didn't have such things as internal HD audio decoding, SACD support, and the analog outputs for those of us who do not need these things.

Not everybody needs these features.

I don't know...Maybe the deletion of said features wouldn't really make that big a difference in their manufacturing costs.

does anyone know how I can get a Blu Ray movie to output the Dolby True HD signal without having to do it manually from the OPPO remote? I seem to remember the 83 was doing this when I first got it but lately it is not auto selecting True HD when the source supports it.

I have a question. I've had my Oppo since June; just got around upgrading to the latest firmware (I had to install another previous one first, to make the latest take. Used USB, no problems installing. Went back to factory default, then set all my previous settings.

After the upgrade, the brightness dropped off big time; the BD we watched after the upgrade was the latest Harry Potter, which is already a dark (visually) movie.

I then used (for the first time) the S&M test disc Oppo supplied, had to crank the brightness up +8 - +10, contrast down -4, to make things better. The display is an old Pioneer RPTV, using DVI input.

Anyone else have this issue?

neekos,

I may be wrong, but I believe the default track is authored into the movie and not arbitrarily selected by the player. So if the player is not selecting the HD track then you have to go into setup and make this selection.

I haven't heard of that. Could it be a color space issue? Try setting the player to RGB Video. DVI is always RGB; "Auto" color space should negotiate this but it's best to be sure.

You'll have to recalibrate. Leave the player brightness and contrast at 0 and adjust the display.

I am a new 983 owner. I plugged in my Nano via the front usb port and was very impressed by the sound quality. However, my mp3 files appear on screen as a stream of nonsensical letters, although when you highlight one the artist name, song title, etc. appears in the upper left hand corner of the screen. I can't access my Nano interface on screen so I can't see the list of artists alphabetically. I can't use the Nano itself to select tracks as it is locked once it's connected to the 983. In order to play a particular song I would have to scroll down them one by one until I happened across it. The files are also arranged randomly rather than in groupings as they appear on my Itunes and on my Nano. Do you have any advice for me? Thanks for the help.

You mean the BDP-83, not the 983H, right? They have the same issues in dealing with data file sorting. I'm not sure about the character set used for file names on the Nano.

The FAQ has links to sorting utilities for FAT file systems, but I don't know specifically about the Nano: Why are media file names not sorted alphabetically?

My mistake. Yes, I do mean the BDP-83.
Is there anyway to enable the Nano itself once it's hooked up to the BDP-83? I really don't care what is on the screen.

A quick question. I have been trying to play the 2 channel stereo track on my Eagles Hotel California DVD Audio Disc and the Oppo can't do it. The counter just starts counting up fast and no audio is produced. My receiver appears to act like it is about to receive the information from the Oppo, but no sound. I have tried the 2 channel track on my Steely Dan Gaucho DVD-A and had success. For the record, I using HDMI and bitstreaming to my Pioneer SC-05.

Any ideas? Thanks

Question....
Can you play VIDEO_TS folder with Oppo83 ?
If not, will they support it in the future ?

No. Unlikely.

You can play VOB files but some DVD Video features are missing. See the FAQ for more.

True. I watched Amadeus today and the TrueHD track was #2. Had to switch it myself.

What firmware are you running.
The stereo plays for me, but the disc functionality is a little wonky.
I had it freeze once trying to get to the main menu.
Had to power off the player and restart.
I'm running beta firmware though.
If I'm bored later, I'll try loading the official fw and retry it.

There's a somewhat documented bug with one version of the Eagles Hotel California DVD-A - it had a screwed up stereo track - it won't play on any of the several DVD-A players I own (and own).

Ok, now before anyone rips me a new one, I HAVE tried the search function and can't seem to find any info. Here is my problem:
I have a Patriot Box Office Media player that uses a lot of the codes of my bdp-83 and totally screw up my IR. Is there a way to set the 83 to a different IR code set? If so, HOW.
Any help is appreciated.
Best,
Chris

The player can use 3 different code sets. Have you tried the others? There is also ALT CODE for use with universal remotes.

This is in the manual.

Harmony does but it's not obvious how to get to them, so see Bill's FAQ for the details of how to indicate to the Harmony software which set you need.

Think before you speak dumbass. Try reading the manual next time.
You'd probably get lost with a compass, a map, AND a GPS.
All that nice gear, and you can't even figure out how to use the remote.
LOSER!!!!!!!!

Just kidding Chris! However, you did say "Fell free to pile on...".

No, smart a$$...I mean smartypants..I said FEEL free to pile on!But I don't expect much from a hick like you!
Wait, it gets better because all the info I needed was in Bills "unofficial manual" which I have probably ripped about a dozen people that have pm'ed me about the Oppo and told them that ALL of their questions are answered in it!
I guess I should RBFM!
However, I am tired and have been drinking...

PS. You should have seen me going "WTF" when I was messing with the Patriot Box Office. At first I thought the Oppo was left on, then I realized that the codes were screwing with everything from audio to resolution settings. It took me a bit to get things back in order. And as I said...I HAVE been drinking..

I suspected there may be alcohol involved.

Well, so far I have no complaints about Oppo. I can't recall any manuf. who pays for the return shipping when something goes wrong. That said, UPS is another story and there have been scenarios where drivers have been unable to locate my apt...that's all it would take for me to be without a player for an even more extended period of time, the likelihood of which increases around this time of year.

I've heard of instnaces where some people will track their package, and set up a pickup time to get the package from their local shipping/distribution center instead of having the delivery driver deliver it.
Food for thought...
