RCA Living Stereo releases were recorded in either 2-channels or 3-channels.

Sit back and enjoy some wonderful music and sound!

I will call Oppo today about returning it, I know this won't be a problem because there such a great company.

i had the same problem. had to return mine to oppo to get repaired. i'm worried about it happening again in another 6 months or so, then i'd be out of warranty.

Ahhh...so that particular album must only be in stereo and there is nothing wrong....thanks..... And you are right both of them are excellent...I think I might just purchase more of these 'Living Stereo' albums...

I just received the same SACD of Richard Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra on Monday, and noticed the same thing. Looking through the included "recording notes", it does indicate that this was a 2-ch stereo presentation. I've got one other "Living Stereo" SACD - Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition, A Night on Bald Mountain, and Other Russian Showpieces; that one is presented as 3-ch.

Considering these pieces were originally recorded in the 1950's, the sound quality from the SACDs is pretty remarkable!

Also, try some of the Mercury Living Presence SACDs produced by the Fines.

Extraordinary sound!!!

OK, quick 2 questions from a newbie and sorry if this has been asked. I have two issues and hoping for simple answers.
1. playback of cd, is there a way to jump up & start with song #5 instead of having to hit play and then enter the #5
2. when i stop a movie and go back later and hit play, the darn thing goes back to the beginning of the entire disc, previews and all, any way to prevent this

thanks to all

I have Arcam 350 receiver.

Could you explain how setting speakers to "small" and set sub to "on" will provide bass management at BDP-83? As progprog said earlier that "They wouldn't be adjustable anyway, as they're fixed at 80Hz when the speakers are set to SMALL."

Do playlists work with CD? They are not saved anyway, so are of limited use.

Other than using forward skip or the numbers I don't know how this would be accomplished. Any ideas? How is the player to know you want #5?

It depends on the disc. DVD and BR without Java can be resumed; BR with Java cannot (which is true of all BR players). This is in the FAQ.

Bill, I got your #2 answer, but not sure you are answering the #1 or adding question to it. My last cd player, I could punch in say track 8 or 12, and the player would play that song or start from there. Is there a way to do this with the Oppo?

You have to load the CD first (ex. let it load Track 1) before you can select Track 8 or Track 12 by using the Numerical Keys or GOTO button.

So I have to physically start track 1 and then enter another track to be played, as that is what I am doing now. If my understanding of your post is correct, then there is no way to just start with #8. Shame
Might I also ask how do you enter say track 14 on the remote?

IIRC, one or two SACD's in that series have both 2 and 3 channel selections on the same disc. (Most "Living Stereo" SACD's were originally issued on two LP's recorded in different sessions.)

I think they are pretty remarkable without making allowances for when they were recorded.

I've never had this problem. You may want to consult your doctor for advice.

You are correct. The player has to engage disc playback prior to it responding to commands to change Tracks.

Press GOTO twice (this will select the TRACK option). Type the track you want using the Numeric Keys. Press Enter or wait 5 seconds for the player to switch to that track.

Even if current it might be worth reloading all three parts of the firmware. You will have to use the USB or CD/DVD method to reinstall the same firmware that you already have; the network update won't do that.

Firmware matches, had symtoms before the last 2 FW updates, it's just much worse now.

You will likely need the player repaired in this situation.

Hmm....I just punch in the track number at any point during playback and it will jump without having to access this TRACK option (of which I was not aware) It sounds like it's the long way around.

I'm on the fringe of understanding this, which is maybe why it's not working for me ...

I have the Oppo at the latest FW, and hard connected via a router to my Windows 7 x64 PC. I set up the Oppo to network, and I [think I] set up Media Center to allow streaming. This seems to be a single click enable. However, I don't see the Oppo as a device I can share to (and I don't have the right click "Play to:" option from a media file).

I eventually tried setting up a "Homegroup" in Win 7, but this seems to be something else. For example, it generated a password for connected devices, which the Oppo has no provision for.

From the Oppo, I can navigate the PC's directories and see individual files (mp3 or jpg), but clicking on them doesn't do anything. Suggestions?

[Edit: Yes I cleared settings and memory cache after the FW update.]

It's a shame this series was discontinued. These disc's were a tremendous value and presented these priceless treasures in a unique way. 90% of the Shaded Dog era LSC's, 1954-64, were three channel recordings and these disc's are the only way one can hear all three channels, not mixed down to two.

HDMI has created a much bigger pool of consumers who now have three channel play back. While I can only hope, perhaps BMG will consider releasing a few more titles now that the multi channel market is much bigger.

Try the Oppo BDP-83 DLNA/UPnP thread.

Updating the firmware via internet can pull the drapes over your eyes, because you didn't read the installation instructions! Had you read them you would have known to reset all setting to complete the updating process and have time to record you setting values, this is why I don't like updating via internet!

Thanks, I didn't know about the DLNA thread.

Unfortunately, while there may be a growing multichannel market, it's dying for SACD's (and DVD-A's). It's very hard to find a player that supports either format anymore, at least at a price an average income consumer would consider reasonable. Thank goodness Oppo still makes them. I've given 980's to two of my daughters to use as CD/SACD players. I hope the new, lower priced BD player intended to replace the 980 in the line still supports SACD and DVD-A audio formats.

Acoustic Sounds lists 52 RCA Living Stereo SACD titles available.

And by the way, BMG is no longer in control of the catalogue, it's Sony!

You can, but I have seen isolated instances where it does not read the commands properly. This is why I recommend the GOTO route.

Is there a setting in the player that can be changed so that it doesn't happen so often or for as long ?

My setup goes from BDP-83 into a Yamaha 3800 AVR and then on to my JVC HD550 projector all over HDMI. Have latest firmware too.

Thanks for any help.

Just to update i got a reply from Oppo about it and this is what they said :

Quote:

Unfortunately this kind of delay is expected, particularly if you are using a projector. The player has to handshake twice when playing Blu-rays. The first handshake occurs when the decoder switches from 60Hz to 24Hz and handshakes a new output frequency with the ABT VRS. This will cause the VRS to momentarily drop the video signal, which will require a new handshake with the display device.

Best Regards,

So i guess its normal and just have to put up with HDMI handshakes or go component.

Noticed all the SACD comments recently, so figured I'd mention the following:

Newbury Comics (a store in Massachusetts) has an Amazon storefront and sells a bunch of SACDs at decent prices. Specifically, they're selling a bunch of Telarc titles (new, not used) in the $2.99-$9.99 range (plus $2.98 shipping per disc). I ordered about 17 SACDs from them at an average of about $8 a disc after shipping.

I usually go to www.sa-cd.net, find the title I'm interested in, search for that title on Amazon and then click "buy new" to list all the dealers selling it new. If Newbury Comics is one of those dealers, it'll often be the lowest price listed.

Hope this helps people who are looking to beef up their SACD collections without shelling out too much money. Not sure how most people feel about the Telarc discs, but I've always enjoyed them. Looks like Newbury is also selling Living Stereo as well as Pentatone titles too, at semi-decent prices.

Chris
