I've had an Onkyo 805 for more than 2 years and can't remember the last time I had sync problems with the BDP-83
Theoretically, the 705 should act the same.
As a suggestion, check into making sure you have the latest fw for your avr.

I updated the firmware about a year ago using the little jig that people were passing around. It was like major surgery, running an old laptop and something like Hyperterminal to install it. I recall it helped with HDMI locking on and fixed the DTS "bomb" which I never experienced but I still have audio lagging video in most cases. I'm sure it's not the Oppo, I love the player and I'm hoping that maybe when I go to a new AV processor the audio lag will go away.

I read in the threads that you guys are playing H264 MKV files. How are you playing these files, I was under the impression that the OPPO did not support NTFS files from a hard drive on the usb port, with FAT32 you have a file size limitation of 4 gigabytes, I know that pretty much all of the H264 files are bigger than 4 gigs, so it puzzles me how you guys are playing them. Also can you tell me if the OPPO can support flac music files on the usb port.

You can play them via a DLNA server. There are no file size limitations I am aware of there and the files can be on an NTFS formatted disc.

No .flac support but some people have been able to use media servers that can decode .flac on the fly and play them through the Oppo. Check this forum thread on DLNA servers and the Oppo: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1215071

Alright, two questions:

Has the Star Trek Blu-ray audio issue been fixed?

Also, anyone who's had issue with the Clash of the Titans Blu-ray disc (no audio on the english track), are these issues resolved, too?

I don't remember any audio issues when I played that movie.

And for me, and also that I didn't find the movie very funny, just moderately entertaining.

You may want to be more specific. It's been awhile since I watched that, but I didn't have any problems while doing so.

Same here - I played the Star Trek BD on my Oppo w/out any audio problem. (My Oppo has the current Official FW - BDP83-48-1224.)

I use only a plain vanilla HDMI connection directly to the TV when playing on one of our two plasma TVs - and I use the Oppo's analog RCA output jacks directly connected to the RCA input jacks on our older plasma TV which has no HDMI, only a DVI input. Anyhow, neither of these two audio connections presented a problem when playing the Star Trek BD.

I also had the worst experience with lip sync on any movie I have ever watched. I have always had lip sync issues with my setup for some reason (Onkyo 705, Oppo BDP83 and other Blu Ray players) but it was really bad on this movie. I'm really not sure where the problem lies but in the three years I have had this setup, I have changed several components but never the receiver so I think that may be it. The sound lags the video so with lip sync adjustment set at "0" it still lags. I kind of expected things to change when I went to separate amps but it's still there. Time to change receivers I suppose.

I noticed the Lip Sync also. I think it is on that disc. I have never had a issue with my set-up before.

I use Oppo 83 and Denon 3808.

I used video essentials to get Lip-Sync right. No other disc has any issues. I think they have just authored the disc a liitle bit out. Really noticable when he is in court.

Regarding Law Abiding Citizen, no lip sync for me with Oppo bitstreaming to Onkyo TX-NR905.

Have you tried using the new BETA FIRMWARE released yesterday?
It's supposed to include some disc compatibility fixes, and while I don't know for sure, it may help with the Squeakquel disc.

Also see the FAQ for things to try if your disc won't play/load.

I have a Denon 3808 and I didn't have any problems with this disc. The only lip sync problems I've had with the 83 was a disc with The Rock (can't remember the name) but he went down to South America to bring somebody back to the US. Lip sync was so bad it was unwatchable.

That was about an hour and a half of my life that I can never get back. What a huge piece of ****! My wife walked out after about 20 minutes. I continued to watch, if only to see if it could possibly get any worse. It did.

I wish the -83 had a POS detector, that would not allow bad films to play.

regarding the latest firmware:

While most of my MKVs now play fine, I still have one that plays fine on the computer, but has many many artifacts when played through the oppo. However, it plays fine on reencoding with the common options + weightp=0. Any ideas on this?

Can you generate a list of characteristics before and after and see if there are differences?

Contact OPPO and ask if they would like a copy of the problem file.

I updated to beta fw yesterday. Elated at the SACD fix, although I only own a handful now, but more on the way.

What is the approximate time frame for the beta fix to become a general release? Will I need to update from beta to the general release?

In the past it has been a couple of weeks. If problems are reported they might do another beta first, but this one seems pretty solid.

Not if the official release is identical to the beta, but I would install the production version anyway. Just in case.

I also would be interested in seeing what the differences are before and after. I still have three mkv's that have bad artifacts without any weighted p-frames. My guess is that when you are reencoding, Handbrake (I'm assuming that's what you're using) is changing some encoding parameters in addition to weightp. One thing to try if you have the time is to reencode the file using the same settings without including the weightp=0 and see if that will play without the artifacts.

Just out of curiousity, how many reference frames are in the original as opposed to the reencoded file?
Regarding the bad MKVs.

While I can give you the parameters I use for reencoding, after which the file plays fine, I don't know how to extract the original parameters (can you ge them using handbrake?).

I did send a sample to Oppo, so they can see the issue.

You can download MediaInfo and open the file(s) there. That will give you a bunch of information on your video & audio codecs, etc. Under the Video section there is encoding settings with a bunch of parameters listed. For example, for files that the Oppo had trouble playing before the beta firmware update, there would be a line that reads wpredp=2. That would be the weighted p-frame setting. After you run Handbrake with the weightp=0 option, that line would not be there.

The second parameter is usually the number of reference frames (ie. ref=3), I'm thinking that the video you are having problems with might have 5 or more reference frames where as I think the default for Handbrake's high profile preset is 3. All the files that I am having problems with are set to 5 reference frames, but the thing that puzzles me is that I have another file with 5 reference frames that plays fine.

mzupeman,

I wasn't aware that there were any issues with these titles. I don't have Clash of the Titans, but which Star Trek title(s) are you referring to?

I installed the latest beta firmware.

I too am experiencing good results with *some* MKVs now but not with others. I will try out this reporting tool as well.

I believe I have isolated the reason that some mkvs still will not play smoothly. As far as I know, the Oppo will not support mkvs encoded above the 4.1 profile level. But even if the file says that it is encoded at 4.0 or 4.1, the h.264 specifications for profiles 4.0 & 4.1 have a maximum of 4 reference frames at 1920x1080 resolution. The files that I am having trouble with all say they are encoded at profile level 4.0 but have 5 reference frames. The file that does work for me has the same profile level and reference frames, but the resolution is 1920x816. At this resolution, 5 reference frames are supported in profiles 4.0 & 4.1. There is a formula for this if anyone is interested.

Good work! You should send this information to Oppo, just in case.
Now, my newbie question: is there a fast way of reducing the "reference frames" of a file?
