Official OPPO BDP-83 Owner's Thread [technical talk only] - Page 1159

Just curious, did anyone notice a load time delay when loading Beauty and the Beast Blu-Ray? It seems like the inital load (ie, just putting disc in the player), takes long as if the unit had frzoen up as the time saids like 0:00 (iirc) for sometime before it actually goes. The same happends with the disc in the unit already present and turning it on (from off), to play. Pass that point, the unit behaves normally.

I wouldn't consider one unless Vudu HDX was included. The BDP-83 will suffice in the meantime.

With Vudu coming to PS3, Id say there is a good shot.

I've got a glitch that has me stumped, maybe one of you can help me figure it out?

I have a BDP-83 connected to a Pioneer SC-25 via HDMI. Whenever I initially power up my system and try to play a Red Book CD (including HDCD) right away, I get no audio until I manually switch my AVR input away from BD and then back to BD. I can do this input dance either on the fly or I can stop playback, do the switch, then start playback again - it doesn't matter. Once I do the AVR input dance, I have no further problems with any type of disc.

On the other hand, if I play another disc (SACD, Blu-ray, DVD, etc.) first after power up, I have no problems with any type of disc.

Does anyone here know what's going on? Is there a solution?

I have an SC-07 and do not find that problem via either Bitstream or LPCM.
Do you have another player you can try to rule out one component over the other?
Also, try another HDMI cable.

Yep. It's just one of those slow-loading discs, even with BD-Live turned off.

I do have another player, but it's older (no HDMI). I will try another cable. Thanks Jeff

I had to send in one of my 83s to Oppo after I accidentally bricked it while trying to update the FW. This unit has a MR mod installed by the re-seller I purchased it from. Will Oppo likely remove the MR mod while fixing the player? MR is really important to me and I'm tech challenged so installing a DIY mod kit is a serious hassle for me.

BTW shipping (both ways) and repair are at no cost to me even though I purchased the unit from a non-authorized re-seller and it was already out of warranty by about 2 months. Oppo rules!!!

According to the FAQ, OPPO says: "We may remove the mod (if necessary for a repair)". If so, they would return the parts to you, but I suspect it wouldn't be necessary unless there has been a hardware failure.

Thanks!

I forgot to add that Oppo stated that they would REPLACE the player AT NO COST TO ME if it was a major hardware failure.

I've never ever previously experienced this quality of customer service. Oppo Rocks!!!

I posted a link on one of these threads to a post in which the writer told a story of how an OPPO representative contacted him based on a report of trouble he posted on an Amazon 83 blog of all places! He was offered a replacement before he sent the problematic machine back in exchange. Shipping paid both ways, etc.

OPPO's customer loyalty has been earned.

The studios love BD-Live and are convinced consumers love it too.

The article states in pertinent part, "Sony touted MovieIQ and was surprised by the sheer number of trailers downloaded from their BD-Live portal."

However, was that "sheer number" really an accurate reflection of intentionally initiated and successfully completed user downloads - or just a "hit count" of access attempts that might include large numbers of player/disc automated download attempts that automatically keep re-accessing their servers over & over while the players remain frozen, until the users finally just turn off BD-Live or eject the discs in frustration...?

When I got my new oppo 93 player, I brought the 83 with me. It was having a problem. It seems that the loader needed to repaired. I just got the email saying that the player is being shipped back to me.

Hopefully have it back sooner then later.

and so the flood gates opened.

seems everyone is trying out do each other selling off their 83 players. The markets are getting quite overloaded.Awhile ago I sold the one I had and found out how much a mistake it was , so I purchased another brand new a month or 2 ago.Congrats to those who got their hands a 93,just don't bail on your 83's just yet.

"and so it always seems to go, you don't know what you've got till it's gone"

PS. what the heck happened at the 93 thread that the admins locked it?

While the oppo 93 Is almost there. I would not sell the 83 just yet. The 93 is still in betA testing for a reason. Glad that I still held onto my player. Got the fedex info that I am getting my oppo 83 back today.

My hat is off more to the wise folks that nabbed a ebay 'fire sale' 83 for 400 shipped, than the people that were able to order a beta 93.

Anyone using their 83 as a source to a headphone amp?

If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts on audio quality, equipmemt you are using, connections, headphones, etc.

There was quite a bit on that in the BDP-83SE thread at one time: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1194011

Thanks for pointing to the SE thread.

Do folks really think the BDP-93 could actually be a step down from the 83 (aside from the analog multichannel outs, which are only used by a minority as it is)?

Just a word of warning and shout out to see if anyone else has this combo working well.

I am rebuilding my theater after a flood wiped it out a year ago. I got the Oppo 83 just before the flood but, have moved to a Crestron 8x2 HDMI switcher and a Classe SSP-800 to replace an IR RDC-7 (Finally!)

I have a Dune Prime HD w/Blu-ray running through the switcher and it works perfectly. The oppo almost never works except with a lot of playing with the output resolution and only with analog by-pass.

Finally gave up and attached it directly to the Classe where it works fine. This is really not an issue until I want to send the output of the oppo somewhere else which isn't a problem today. That's another reno...

Just thought I would see if anyone else had seen this combo work properly (do switchers get firmware upgrades?) and provide a heads up for those that might.

They use the same DACs for multichannel analog. Some have said the other analog circuitry is improved in the -93, but I don't investigate audio to that degree.

Step down in what way? BR should be the same, DVD video seems a toss up to me. The -93 does not have 24pp for DVD but I don't miss it.

On the other hand, if you don't need 3D or Netflix streaming there is not much need to upgrade. The -93 supports more media file formats, but if your emphasis is on discs, the -83 is fine.

I'd suggest that you get in touch with Crestron and OPPO if you haven't yet. If your Crestron system is being handled by a dealer, get them to look into it. Another place you can go to seek some advice is the Crestron Programmers Group on Yahoo Groups - if you aren't already a member, I'd suggest you join as you may gain some useful insight even if you aren't programming the system on your own.

I'm waiting for a 3D OPPO, can do without streaming for a while. I guess the BDP 83 will become my second player then..

There's a rumor about some new OPPO player called the BDP-93 that supports 3D.
Hi GSR, I just jumped in here, and haven't been following the thread. Are you serious? A 3D OPPO with streaming would be the best A/V news since my Peachtree Audio Nova arrived.
