The new Public Beta firmware out today (0226B) fixes the problem with analog or HDMI LPCM output of 7.1 TrueHD tracks introduced in the last Public Beta.

Note that the changes shown in the release notes refer to changes since the "official" firmware version. I.e., fixes already included in the prior Public Betas are shown again.

Personally, I think this Public Beta is well worth trying.

Oppo engineering also believes this Public Beta firmware (0226B) finally fixes the lingering problems with corruption of Persistent Storage which prevented some discs from playing properly unless you first erased whatever was currently in Persistent Storage and/or turned off BD-Live.

---------------------------------

Problems still pending include improper aspect ratio for 4:3 mkv filies. Workaround, use 16:9 Wide.

Streaming 1080p/23.976 mkv files will result in them being decoded as 1080i/60 and then output at 1080p/60 if you have 1080p resolution set. 1080p/24.000 mkv files stream correctly as 1080p/24

Streaming does not yet support Divx/Xvid files.

Toy Story 3's 7.1 DTS-HD MA track is still incorrectly decoded. Workaround, use the 5.1 DTS-HD MA track that is also on that disc.

Yes, it is the same thumb drive I've been using for all of the firmware upgrades. The thumb drive contains the upg folder along with all the folders contained within it.

So, found the FW update kick in, tried to play Clone Wars Season II (after doing the usual factory defaults/clear persistent storage/turn off bd-live madness that we have to do) and it just hangs after the initial warning with 0:00 on the display.

So freakin' annoying that we still can't seem to have, for Fox titles at least, any reliable way of playing these discs. Threw it on the PS3 and it played immediately without hiccup.
Give Oppo tech support a call. There should be no problem with the Fox Blu-ray titles in the 0226B Public Beta firmware.

You should no longer have to turn off BD-Live or erase Persistent Storage.

-----------------------------------

For others: I should have said that you should erase Persistent Storage one more time after installing this Public Beta firmware to clear out any corrupted data that might still be in there from the older firmware.

I have the oppo 83se My current firmware is the May 5, 2010 Likewise with the August beta firmware I was not able to load that as well.

Call Oppo tech support. You may have a faulty USB socket.

While waiting, download a fresh copy and try the other USB socket.

And of course try another stick drive if you have one. You could also try reformatting your current stick drive at your computer as that too may cure some issues.

Well I got it to work, I just merely dragged the unzipped file into the usb drive and unzipped the file there and the upg folder appeared along with all the files in that folder, weird I don't think I ever had to do that before I just dragged the upg folder into the usb drive and was always able to load the firmware that way. In any event all is good!

Glad it worked. I've no idea why you had a problem that this method would fix. Something strange apparently going on between your computer and that USB stick.

I am looking to purchase a BDP-83. I do NOT need 3D. I do not care about networking capability as I simply connect my laptop (and soon will get a Mac Mini to meet my needs).

I have a Pioneer receiver, Elite SC-37. This includes a device which can receive RF signal and convert back to IR and transmit by attaching the included blasters. I would like to know if I can attach a stereo to stereo (or is it mono to mono) wire between the Oppo BDP-83 and this Pioneer device and control the unit.

Let me know as I intend to hide the unit in a cabinet under the TV where the doors will remain closed during movie-playback, etc.

I searched the Wiki, FAQ, this thread, and online with no success.

^^^ you'll need the Oppo 3.5mm stereo to 3.5mm mono cable - I use one with my URC RF to IR gear.

Shouldn't be a problem, but if you give Oppo tech support a call they may very well have history on file regarding the adapter you want to use.

You need to get a special stereo to mono cable from Oppo. The jack on the player includes power for Oppo's own IR receiver. This special cable strips that out so you don't fry the gadget you have or the player itself by shorting that power lead.

Typically the only problem with radio/IR adapters like this is if they are limited to certain carrier frequencies and don't cover the frequency used by the, in this case, Oppo remote. I.e., if the output of your adapter covers the wrong frequency range. If you have specs on your adapter, Oppo tech support may be able to tell you whether it looks like it should work.

You (or anyone else) have the CLONE WARS Vol2 discs to give a shot? Again, I'll give them a call, but this is simply identical behaviour to what we were seeing before, I'm skeptical it's been "fixed".

Hopeful, but skeptical.

I don't have those. I've posted your report to the Beta testers but don't have any reports back yet. However I do know that this firmware contains fixes specific to the problems with Fox titles.

That is the way it works for me, too.

So, I did the firmware upgrade, and as I always do, I reset the Oppo. When I was resetting my preferences, I noticed that BD Live defaulted to OFF. Has that always been the case? I seem to remember having to select OFF...

Thanks. I use my player mostly for music, and watch only one or two movies a month. (which is one reason why I'm considering the SE upgrade) It refused to play two different copies of Secretariat. I suspect this will be fixed with the firmware update. I've downloaded the current beta version and will run it after I buy a new battery backup for my computer. I use two and generally bring the smaller one out to the Oppo when running updates, but it smoked on me the other day so I need to replace it. I'll probably do that today.

I'm still curious about the SE upgrade. Those who have done it have auditioned both DACs in action. I have a nice sabre dac for redbook cds, but I'm interested in how the upgrade handles hi rez material in comparison to the non SE version.

That's a change.

The BD certification tests used to require it to be ON by default for BD-live capable players. Apparently there's been enough anger about BD-live that this has been relaxed.

There's a separate thread here where folks are discussing the 83se as regards audio performance. You'd likely find more info there.

Thank you. I'll check that out.

I was kinda wondering how the upgrading of a non SE version to an SE version went, and curious if those who did the upgrade were happy about the decision. How long did it take. Etc.

Maybe that info is in that thread. I'll go have a look.

Thanks again.

Is there any way to download movies (ie Netflix, etc.) via the BDP 83 player. The player is connected to the internet via the ASUS wireless bridge kit. Thanks

The 83 does not support any internet streaming services (e.g., Netflix streaming), and it is unlikely that will ever get added to it. Consider the 93 or 95 for that.

However, if you use some other means to download a movie to a hard drive directly attached to the 83's USB port, or to a DLNA server you set up on your home network, then you may be able to play the movie that way. See the FAQ, and the Oppo Wiki (links available at the top of the first post of this thread) for information on file formats supported. Also see the Oppo DLNA/uPNP thread for discussion on how to set up such a server on your home network.

Maybe Season II has something special? Just tried my Clone War Season I on my 83, no problem with all 3 disks, without any factory reset.

Why not just call Oppo to check this, or simply send them a brief email?

Thanks for your fast reply.
I was hoping the OPPO BlueTV connection by Dreamer would be adding downstreaming links. Yes I am considering the 95 player. Thanks again

Unfortunately, each of these brand name services wants their own code front end in the player for access, so it is unlikely the BlueTV portal will provide access to them.

I have been a happy user of my BDP-83 for almost 2 years. However, tonight I noticed that my tray does not eject, and sometimes opens and closes right away, and then sometimes just gets stuck a quarter of the way open. Does not happen all the time, but is concerning. Was wondering, will Oppo fix my disc tray if they determine it is an issue, and if so, what is the turn around time. I read that it is pretty quick.

Thanks

Give them a call and they'll figure out what needs to be done. The biggest delay for service is usually the travel time each way.

I just got mine back, see if they will send you the part to repair it yourself, as someone else mentioned in this thread. I was not told of this option, if it even exists by Oppo. Shipping for me was expensive, as I did not have a box or the time to package it and go to the post office, and the shipping services near me are a ripoff, but I needed to get the job done, so I paid dearly. Sending it UPS ground to save what money I could, was a week to get to them, and the returned it FedEx ground, took another week. I had no problem waiting as I have other cheaper BlueRay decks anyways. The included sheet from Oppo said: "repaired the following part: Loader Frame". Since they can do this so quick and turn it around in the same day, it may be something one can do themselves if handy, not sure, wish that option was presented to me if indeed it is an "option". I still believe any costs to the user should have been covered as this problem has been reported here by quite a few users and seems to keep popping up, who knows how many of these draws are defective in the general public, meaning those that have no idea of this forum? Well, CASE closed in my case, PUN intended, hope for years of service now, and no more money out of my pocket. Good luck!

Hello,
Does the 83 upconverts 480i or nonanamorphic dvds?
I was reading that it does not.
Thank you,
