I have and Xbox360 and PS3. ...
The pink screen only occurs when I switch from the Oppo to the Directv Tuner. By that logic, it seems the culprit is the Oppo to Panny TV HDMI handshake. Correct?
No. If you have an DTV xx24 it's RGB, the older ones are YCC. It may help to put the Oppo in RGB-CE (video) or you can sort out a better albeit more complex solution.
Once you switch Sources, a new handshake has to begin. That handshake, from end to end, is driven by the newly selected Source device.
Evidently your set top box is making incorrect assumptions about how the AVR is set when the AVR is switched from the Oppo to the set top box. Or the set top box is not following the protocol to get the AVR to switch gears. The problem is most likely in the set top box, although it is possible it is a combination of problems in the set top box and the AVR.
The one place the problem CAN'T be in this scenario is in the Oppo. The nature of the HDMI handshake is that things are supposed to start over, without making assumptions as to what has gone before. NO MATTER HOW the Oppo has left things, the new handshake is supposed to reset things the way they need to be NOW.

Well, turned on my 83 to watch a movie tonight and hit the eject button...and nothing. Hit it three or four times, still nothing. Remembered the problems people have had with the tray, hit eject on the remote and it opened. I put the disc in, closed it with the button on the player and it closed and opened up a few moments later with the disc still spinning a bit.
Closed it again and watched the movie. The button on the player worked to eject the disc (power was never off). I opened and closed it another half-dozen times just fine and turned the player off. Tried again about an hour later just for the heck of it, and it still opened and closed fine.
Is this probably a sign of the tray failure that people have experienced? I was cleaning the outside of the player (including the outside of the tray) and hadn't turned it on since...so maybe it's wishful thinking that it was a fluke? Time will tell, I suppose.
That sounds more like a problem with the firmware sensing the button push on the front panel. If it goes away after a power cycle it is likely just a one time fluke -- nothing to worry about.

Is there anyway to show mp3 files on the OPPO 83 front panel?
I would like to view file names without turning on the TV.
It appears that the only way to select folders on a mp3 disk is to have the tv on.
You need a display. Some folks use a small (7 or 10 inch) LCD display attached to the player's composite video output for this. The Haier models are popular.

Is anyone else having a problem with Battle: Los Angeles BD and the 83. The disc tries to load. The status bar blinks once and gets to the last mark and then freezes. I have the latest firmware installed. Works fine in my PS3. I do not see any defects in the disc itself. Display shows all zeros.

Try hitting the yellow button on the remote when it seems to freeze. I have a couple of problematic discs that hang up on the menu screen and can only advance by hitting that yellow button. I'm not saying it's the do-all to end all but it's worthy of a try.
The 93 recently got the ability to play DVD & BD ISO's over the network - I wish Oppo would just fix the MKV aspect ratio issue on the 83 and for making us wait so long add ISO support to the 83.

It's my understanding that the BDP-93/95 models do ISO from direct connected hard drives, not from a network. It would be nice if the BDP-83 could do the same. Is it possible?
I'd be very surprised if Oppo adds significant new features like this to the 83. The underlying control programming in the 83 and the 93 are quite different.

I asked Oppo point-blank if they would offer a Netflix upgrade to the 83, and their answer was no.
Well I suppose the "upgrade" is buying a 93 -- less whatever you get for selling your 83. (Or were you thinking FREE upgrade?)
Not the answer you want to hear of course, but every company has to move on as their product line evolves. At some point, Oppo will stop adding features to the 93 as well.

there are plenty of IR solutions out there. Mine has been out of site for years, I also have my D2v, projector, lights, blinds etc on IR. Easy as can be, just stick the small IR sensor on the front of the device and put a central receiver somewhere where it can be seen, and off you go. I use a NEVO universal remote and all works well. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...598&CatId=4738

I am moving my 83 to a closet and will need something in the HT room to control it.
The only trick is that the rear IR input of the 83 (unlike on the 93/95) includes a power feed for the external sensor Oppo sells.
If you want to use some other sensor, you need an adapter cable which discards that power feed and keeps from frying your external sensor or shorting the power output from the Oppo. Oppo sells the adapter cable. Again this is only needed for the 83 and 83SE. This is nothing fancy. It's like a cable with a stereo plug at the player end and a mono plug at the sensor end that simply doesn't connect the extra wire carrying the power out of the player jack.

With the ones I linked to in my post, you do nothing on the back of the 83, the sensor sticks on the front of the 83 - its very small.

Yay,
I love the fact it's not getting Netfix, Face book or YouTube. That stuff blows anyway. This player is a rock solid disc player and that keeps me happy.
