Another way to look at it: My DirecTV, Samsung TV, and Onkyo Pre/Pro are all capable of Netflix and/or Pandora and/or YouTube, etc... so it doesn't bother me that the Oppo can't do it.

Yeah, my Apple TV, and TiVo both have Netflix so no big deal. I'm hanging onto the 83 for the foreseeable future as I think 3D is going to fizzle.

I wanted Vudu, miss that on the BDP-83. So I got a Boxee and VPN-service to be able to stream movies all the way to Sweden

In the process of connecting/reconnecting cables, I must have damaged the HDMI cable from my Oppo. Now the picture turns on and off intermittently, so does the HDMI indicator on the Oppo display.

Otherwise I find the Oppo to be a very capable blu-ray player, far from my old Samsung where you had to install a new firmware for almost every new released blu-ray movie...

Agreed,
I also have a Denon 3D blu-ray (1611). I have upgrade to the 3D version Cinervusum Blackwing 3 projector. I tried the emitter and glasses browed from the retailer and hated it. Just not going to use 3D. Never liked it. At home or the Cinema.

All my gear is 3D capatable accept my AVR and I still don't want 3D.

I wouldn't say that netflix "blows". Youtube and Facebook through my television? No, I don't need that. However, I have other devices to handle nf.

When I turn on my Oppo BDP-83 at the plug I hear a high pitched squeal (beep?) lasting a fraction of a section. It is quite loud.

When I turn off the unit I hear the high pitched noise, again for a fraction of a second. Interestingly the noise doesn't happen immediately on switch off. It happens about 30 seconds afterwards. Could this be capacitor related? Should I be worried about damage to the player from turning off and on?

So I downloaded the latest update about two weeks ago and late last night I go to watch a bluray of back to the future and it doesn't load. I get the Universal home video logo and it'll start playing previews streamed from the internet (you know the way Universal does) but after that the screen remains blank and the player face just says top menu. I tried another Universal disc and it worked fine. I also know that BTTF worked fine earlier but this is the first time I've played it after the update.

Yeah so i'm not really sure what to do here. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Check the FAQ referenced in the first posting in this thread for the section on what to do when a disc won't play.

Mine has always done that.

It is the Mod Kit. That works by using a beeping sound.
I always turn mine off through a power conditioner.

Beeps when turned On and beeps when the power drains
from the unit. Correct about 30 seconds.

Nothing to worry about.

Sorry, My Bad.

I'm from New Zealand we don't get Netfix so I shouldn't comment.

Does this procedure help? What do I do if a Blu-ray disc will not load or play, or if it freezes the player?

Follow the steps in the FAQ for erasing Persistent Storage and Resetting Factory Defaults after the firmware install to get rid of any cruft left over from the previous firmware. Then try again.

That did the trick. Thanks a lot!

I do have a slight problem with the lord of the rings EE in my Oppo player.

Frankly I have had more problems with this player than any other bluray player I have owned.

Anyway, the player always locks up when I put in a 2nd disc.

I have to turn off the player and then restart it with the disc inside of the player to get it read.

Are you running current firmware? Did you try the cleanup procedure linked above?

I have the most recent firmware. I don't get why I would have to do the cleanup procedure over and over. I had to use that same procedure to get the Predators bluray to work, which IMO is dumb.

Simply turning off BD-Live and leaving it off will avoid most of these issues.

Power cycle the player. If you look back in the thread there are several people who have issues with replaying the same film twice or playing back another film from the same distributor during a single power cycle. Most of these errors are reported for Warner Brother titles. New Line Cinema is a subsidiary of Warner Brothers.

Power cycling the player resolves these kind of lockups.

I will do all of these things when I get him, but I do admit to being perturbed to having to do this.

I sent them an email and their response was:

Discs not loading properly are due to the firmware being out of date and the Persistent Storage becoming corrupt. Download and install the 55-0226 Firmware installed (http://oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-8...e-55-0226.aspx).

Perform an Erase BD-Video Data (Device Setup->Persistent Storage) and disable BD-Live (Network Setup).

Turn off the player then turn it back on.

All current and future discs should now load properly.

We have seen some cases with Warner Brothers releases that loading another release from the same company during the same power cycle can cause these kind of loading errors.

Please try power cycling the player between discs and see if the same errors occur.

Which tells me they didn't completely read my email since I already stated I had the latest firmware.

I don't know. I feel that I should not have to erase my persistent storage to get something to work right.
In light of the above post when I get home I will just reapply the latest firmware using the USB method since I was also informed that the firmware isn't always correctly applied through the network.

I will also erase my persistent storage as well.

But it is kind of frustrating to have paid $500 to have the absolute best player on the market and have any issues at all, since I never had these issues with my Panasonic BD35 or PS3.

No it doesn't. They sent you a boiler plate for your exact problem.

Persistent storage is there to support BDLive which is intended by the studios to provide a channel for advertising into your home. Even if you turn BDLive off, the studios may put corrupted data into persistent storage. It's one of the facts of life if you want Blu-ray, and the player manufacturers have no control over what the studios use it for.

FOTR.

Thanks. I tried playing my FOTR this evening and found I got a freezeup with the first disk. My persistent storage was empty and my firmware up to date. I always reset to factory defaults when installing new firmware. I tried re-emptying my storage with no effect. Power cycling had no effect. Since it was the first BD of the day there was no other WB title in the machine prior to the lockup.

Then I reset to factory defaults again and was able to successfully play both disks without further issues.

I can buy the idea of having to purge persistant storage on occasion although it might be nice for the firmware to trap whatever errors are occurring instead. Periodically resetting to factory defaults though?? Having to reset between two titles from the same studio???

I have had this firmware in my machine since it was released in March without issues except with the True Grit DVD which I could not get to play at all.

I think there is something fishy here with the LOTR EE BDs. True Grit is still waiting for a fix.

Watched the new True Grit BR from Netflix the other night no problems. Although, Netflix sometimes has there own version of the disk. The one we had did not have any extras.

With TRUE GRIT people are reporting problems with the DVD, not the Blu-ray.

I had problems with the theatre version of lotr:fotr blu ray with the oppo 83. for some reason the player just doesn't like the movie. which is strange since its the one player to rule them all.
