I also found the video quality on the 05 better than the Oppo,to the point I had to adjust the picture for the OPPO set up on Pio Pro Elite 111 fd..whereas the 05 looked just fine...I may have to retry the video by going directly from the OPPO into the tv instead of hdmi pass through from my Marantz pre -pro for HD sound..the 05 is direct into tv via hdmi and i just use the optical for sound to the Marantz

Thank you for that quick reply and info. Have a great day and enjoy Star Wars.

I should add that my 83 has never had BD-Live turned on and never been hooked up to the internet. I have never cleared persistent storage either (I don't know what, if anything, is in there).

It just works.

I guess you were lucky with that old firmware. I just tried episode IV with the 54-0130B firmware and it wouldn't load (needed to power cycle to get the disc out). After updating to the latest (55-0226) it loaded OK and reached the menu in about 1m 30s (BD Live was Off).

yes ..I should have mentioned that too...the player becomes non responsive and has to be powered cycled just to remove the discs...my bd live also is always off and not connected to the internet

Weird glitch on Return of the Jedi…

If you have the 6.1 track sent out to your AVR (mine is an Onkyo 906) as LPCM the back surround will be silent. Turn it to DTS HD Master bit streaming and you get the 6th channel.
The other films do not have this issue...

also as was stated by another member...I have never encountered a disc that loaded so slow on the OPPO
now for some heartbreaking news....not so much that my panny 60k was faster than the OPPO...but my Pioneer Elite 05,a real turtle, blew away the OPPO with these discs

Well poo - I'll try a couple of my Star Wars discs tonight and report back with load times, etc.

With BD Live turned on and hooked to the internet, it took between a minute to a minute and a half to get to the top menu on the Phantom Menace. I had no audio or video glitches through the whole movie.
Being a Fox title I had my finger and toes crossed when I put the disc into the player. I was releaved when it loaded and played with out a glitch.

I am running the current firmware and I am bitstreaming to my Onkyo receiver. I aways clear the persistant storage before I turn off the player and I noticed that nothing was stored in it.

My testing says that loading of "Star Wars: Episode iV" is about a 50/50 proposition on the 83.

If it works, you will be on Top Menu in about 1:30 from Tray Close. This timing is very consistent. If it doesn't work you will be stuck AFTER the text about firmware updates appears and BEFORE "Top Menu" appears in the Front Panel display. Instead you will have dashes in the Front Panel display indefinitely. I've not seen it recover when stuck for more than 2 minutes this way (measured from Tray Close). Power cycling is necessary.

I've not had this problem on either the 93 or the 80.

Anyway, if it fails to load, just power cycle, clear Persistent Storage and try again. Odds are pretty good it will work. Oppo has the details of my testing.

My experience was 100% good with Ep-4. I suspect the real issue may be with RE-loading the film, secondary to the JAVA-Resume programming. I find it can be temper mental if the movie isn't stopped and ejected with the correct secret code words. But my -83 had no issues with this title.

BTW, what IS the current firmware version of the BDP-83 or 83SE? Thanks!

You can always find the latest on the Oppo web site.

Agree. I had the same issues with episode IV (which that set has been returned as it wouldn't load any way you tried).

Between that and issues with back surround and bitstreaming, if this third set gives me any further headaches I'm going to blow up a f*%cking Death Star myself.

Interestingly enough I watched IV & V last night (cleared persistent storage first even though I'm not internet connected) and they both played fine. Went to watch VI tonight and of course it would not load. Just shut the player down and started it back up, erased again, and it started just fine and played perfectly. strong is the power of the Java.

Latest firmware, no BD-Live, cleared persistent storage (on a 8GB flash drive), Eps 1&2 failed to start (I got the dashes). Cycling power with the BD still inside "fixed" it.

Darned if I didn't forget to try my Star Wars discs last night. Oh well - I have an excuse, my daughter has come down with a stomach bug - YUCK!

Anyway, I'll probably try them tonight . . .

Is it possible to have region free DVD with the latest firmware: BDP83-55-0226?

Is there a hacked version of it?
Yes, there are both hardware and software mods. Do a search and you will find. The hardware mods are the best way to go because you can get region-free BD as well.

Never, ever, install "hacked firmware". If you want DVD R-0 in the -83, there are several ways to do it. The easiest is a CD that can be used to set R-0.

Are all the issues with Star Wars and the 83 related only to loading, or are there also problems with audio dropouts when bitstreaming that are being discussed in other threads here and in other forums?

Anyone with an 83 running to a Denon 2310CI seeing this problem? Or is this only with software players? I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead and order the SW set from Amazon or hold off.

You can always set the player to LPCM and have it do the audio decoding if you experience errors with the player bitstreaming to your receiver.
^^^ Right, that's the workaround. I don't mind doing that as long as it's lossless.

It is lossless, just pre-decoded by the player prior to going out to your receiver. It is likely that you will not perceive any difference in the audio quality.
I'm sure I wouldn't. There are also reports of video pixelation along with the dropouts, but that seems to be hardware-specific. Haven't seen any mention of OPPO in those cases.

This would almost certainly be a symptom of a dirty or defective disc, which happens a lot more often than you'd think. There has been a feeding frenzy of people looking for issues on those discs, so it's no surprise that a pretty wide variety of issues (probably unrelated) have been reported.

I watched Episode IV last night - nothing all that unusual about the load times, maybe a tick longer than the norm.

Counting one thousand and one, one thousand and two . . . it was almost exactly 60 seconds from the time I loaded the disc until the "PLAY" menu appeared, then about another 30 seconds after I entered on the PLAY button until the movie actually began to play.

Video quality was fine, but on MY system the dialogue seemed thin, high-pitched or "tinny". The other audio seemed fine, nothing to write home about, but OK. Dialogue sucked! Need to try some adjustments next time I play IV.

I'll post more disc loading observations as time allows.

The mix for the Star Wars Blu-rays is almost exclusively Center channel oriented for the dialogue. It was annoying me to a certain extent as well.

Thanks for that info, that explains a lot. Next time I view a SW saga blu-ray I'll adjusting my various speaker levels to see if I can find a happy medium.

My system is such a mix-match of components that it is most likely exaggerating the problem as well.

More than annoying IMHO, but part of a greater trend amongst audio engineers.
Nobody ever taught them how to mix a center channel I guess, and I guess we should get used to it. (It's never OK to have dialog in center channel only)
