Thanks

I have always done the Internet upgrade. Pretty mindless and no problems.

I just upgraded my 83SE to the latest firmware (58-1215) from a disc I requested from Oppo and I couldn't remember from the previous upgrade if, after completing the upgrade, the player goes back to the factory default settings. In the instructions which came with the disc it says..."to enter set-up and check to see if the new firmware version is listed." And then the instructions show an option to reset factory default to reset the player's settings. Why would anyone want to lose their player settings if it could be avoided? I'm slightly confuzed!
^ The firmware update does not, itself, reset the settings.

Generally speaking, resetting the settings is recommended "just in case". You can certainly continue on without doing that, but if you run into any problem your first thought should be to do the reset and see if that fixes things.

Very strange. I've no idea what might be going on here. Of course I suppose it could just be a faulty USB drive that's confusing the player. But I take it that it is working fine for your ORB stuff.

To be candid, I haven't used the Orb features for nearly a month. I will experiment a bit more with it to see if the USB drive is OK.

No dice. I bypassed the AVR and connected direct to the TV through HDMI. Still no audio/video.

Next I attempted the Reset. Had to switch from HDMI to Composite video so I could see the menu on the Set Up screen. Performed the Reset, and unfortunately, didn't fix the problem.

I guess it's pooched.

Email OPPO with the details. They may have additional diagnostics. At worst they have fixed price out of warranty repair for something like $50-60.

oddly enough my player is seeing the latest FW via network. its telling me i have the latest version, but by comparison of FW#s i do not.

EDIT: nevermind, public beta = the same.

If you want to switch between Public Beta and Official firmware in either direction you must do so via USB or disc install. Network install will not switch you from one style to the other.

My 3808 and Oppo get along fine, both on DHCP, but I'm running my own DHCP server that may be more robust than the embedded ones in routers and stuff.

well well... Was having yet another brutal time with a fox title, and decided on a lark to check the Oppo website. Despite NOT running the last beta, checking for FW update (auto or manual) on the player wasn't noticing any new updates. Lo and behold, a December surprise that slipped me by!

Threw in WEST SIDE and while it's not exactly a speedy loading screen, it worked on first try.

Very, VERY nice to see the old girl still getting some Firmware love.

It's really scary that 6 years into the format. Firmware updates are still needed to play new movies, but I would expect no less from OPPO.

It not the fault of the Blu ray format or OPPO, it is the movie studios that keep changing their copy right protection every year to prevent theft.
The only thing I can say is it is the two biggest Blu ray supporters during the format war that do this, FOX and DISNEY. Even if HD DVD would have won we would have the same problem.

Can't find a reference for this in the thread....
Has anyone heard a popping sound from their speakers after restarting The Tree of Life BD from PAUSE?

I am bitstreaming to an Onkyo Pro 885 and am using the latest Oppo firmware.

Same here...Onkyo 805 bitstreaming to Oppo. It also happens on Golden Compass as well as a few other movies.

I wonder if this might be an Onkyo problem?
I'll check to see if there might be new firmware (HIGHLY unlikely)....

EDIT: Nope, nothing for either models.

I have the TX-SR805 and BDP-83 as well. From what I've read if you're running firmware prior to 1.08 on the 805 this is called the DTS bomb.

I have not experienced this first hand and I'm running an older firmware on my 805 (ver 1.06). I've seen the Golden Compass mentioned specifically relative to this issue.

Hope this is helpful.

My memories on fixing the 905 DTS bomb issue are rusty. However, if I recall that fix was different than the regular firmware update procedure. An entirely different procedure was used. Maybe Joerod can give a few pointers.

It was a DSP update, which is different from the main firmware.

It is different than the DTS Bomb...it is soft-ish pops when you hit pause and then play or FF/RW buttons while playing the movie back.

Exactly.

Sorry ..i can't wade through 1245 pages of threads. Can anyone speak to how well the bdp-83 supports MKV containers over DLNA these days? I watch 50/50 between physical media and digital MKV's on my NAS and wish to have as few devices in the system as possible. Trying to decide if a used 83 will fit my needs or if I have to go with a new 93 model.

DLNA streaming will have issues related to bandwidth restrictions. I have not really had issues with 720p or 1080p MKV files which were compressed from HDTV or Blu-ray Japanese animes, but these are usually highly compressed (2GB or smaller). The higher the file size, the more likely you will run into hardware limitations of the player.

gotcha. Most of mine are ~4GB 720p rips for movies that I don't particularly care about HD fidelity, but dont want to look like crap @ 50".

Are the hardware limitations less of an issue for the 93 vs the 83? I'm not seeing much in the form of specs that I can compare about processing muscle on digital files between the two models.

I know that file support has the potential to be iffy on either model, but I'd like to pick the unit which will meet my needs and reduce clutter. I'm tired of PS3 for this, hook up laptop with Plex for that, switch over to hardware X for format Z, etc.

FWiW, the few times I've used Twonky to stream networked MKVs, there have been no bandwidth problems. These are 1080p files that are > 8GBs.

It is likely that you will not have any issues with the DLNA streaming. If you do, you can always switch to direct USB playback as long as the files are 4GB or smaller.

wait ..using which model? I'm trying to decide if I can spend ~350 on a used bdp-83 or should spring for the 500 on a bdp-93.
Sorry, I thought that was understood. The 83.
