Official OPPO BDP-83 Owner's Thread [technical talk only] - Page 1249

^ Your second-hand 83se may very well have outdated firmware. Start by checking the version numbers in Setup > Device Setup > Firmware Information against the numbers shown on Oppo's Support page for the 83 and 83se.

Thank you Bob for your quick reply.

Actually I have 03/17/2011 - Official 55-0226 Firmware Released .
So it seems that it is not very outdated.

There is only one newer firmware but from what I have read there is no info about similar issue.

For now. The only solution for me is: before listening to sacd - disconnecting hdmi from OPPO.

Perhaps "pure audio" might help? But I cannot verify for sure whether after switching on pure audio there is DSD or PCM.

Probably, my telly is wrongly identified by OPPO or there is something wrong with OPPO hdmi output.

I will be grateful for any comments or advice.

Best Regards

This isn't a bug or hardware issue. Your TV presumably can't accept DSD over the HDMI input. During the HDMI handshake, if the Oppo determines that the other end can't handle DSD, it switches to PCM mode so that you don't get potentially damaging sound. Some people have installed HDMI switchers between the player and TV so they don't have to disconnect the HDMI cable to listen to SACD's, just switch to a different input. You might be able to accomplish the same thing by switching to another HDMI input on your TV when you want to listen to SACD's - it depends on the TV.

Thank you gsr for your answer.

Taking into consideration your comment I wonder why OPPO has "problem" with my telly if in set up HDMI Audio is OFF??.

With such setting no matter what is connected to OPPO shouldn't cause problems.

Do you know people who have experienced similar problems. You wrote " Some people have installed HDMI switchers between the player and TV so they don't have to disconnect the HDMI cable to listen to SACD's '

So there is no other option for me than to buy a good switch???

Best Regards

This has been thoroughly discussed in times past. There are some TVs and related HT products which can be permanently damaged if fed DSD over HDMI. So Oppo has chosen the approach that they will not allow you to risk that. The hardware apparently does not allow a "fail-safe" if DSD is selected and HDMI-audio is on, it will send DSD. So this is an "idiot-proofing" function.

The BDP-93 does not have this limitation. Switching the TV to another input may be a work-around, you can still observe DSD vs PCM on the front panel of the player.

To play Dsd directly to the stereo one needs a hdmi connection. My reading of your post suggests your hookup is not hdmi. Am I off base?

You should be able to download the manual. Highly recommended reading.

He's using the analog connections for his audio, in which case he can go direct from DSD to analog. But to do so, he needs to deal with the fact that thing at the other end of the HDMI cable doesn't accept DSD, which forces the conversion to PCM.

Thank you very much for all your comments regarding the problem with DSD.
You have been very helpful.
^ With the 93 and the 95 you can enable DSD-Direct-to-Analog conversion on the Analog output by setting HDMI Audio OFF (if the device at the other end of the HDMI cable won't accept DSD).

I thought this had also been addressed in the 83 and 83se but evidently not.

I'm curious what brand/model AVR do you have?
Thanks

For the moment Pioneer VSX 912D. I know, a little outdated.

But still very impressive in analog 5.1 SACD/DVD-A and with analog stereo in direct mode cosiderably good/very good.

Any suggestions/comments are welcomed.

For anyone interested, "refurbished" Oppo BDP-83 units have just re-appeared on Oppo's web site:

http://www.oppodigital.com/products.asp

They are sold with a full, new unit warranty, and at a modest discount from the original retail price. Historically, refurbished units of Oppo's various players have been snapped up in a twinkling, so if you are interested, don't dawdle.

Just got back my OPPO83 today from OPPO. Very fast turn around and it cost me nothing other than the shipping cost to send it to OPPO.

It works like new now.

Here is what OPPO said. Diagnostics revealed firmware crashed for some reasons.
Problem resolution- formatted NAND flash and upgraded firmware revison BDP83-581215.

UPDATE! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Oppo83 locked up tonite and would only display hello.
Don't know if i should throw it in the trash and get something new or keep paying for shipping and send it back again.

I have a few movies that I have ripped for the family in mkv redux (no loss)format, they are 40 gigs plus amd given the 83s limited ethernet abilities I was hoping to be able to plug in a portable hard drive on the back and also wondered if the oppo would make use of the HD audio in mkv redux format? I can re rip to a diffent format.

My normal media player the Seagate Home theater + does not play HD Audio tracks from files so I was thinking to use my Oppo 83 to access these.

thoughts.. thank you

The -83 supports only the FAT file system and the limit on file sizes there is 4GB. The -93 supports NTFS where that limit is lifted.

You could play them via ethernet from a DLNA server but the HD Audio tracks will not work. The -93 has that restriction, too.

If it happened only once I would forget it. If it happens consistently contact OPPO and see what they say.

OPPO said it could be a handshake problem or a bad HDMI cable. I may change out HDMI cables if the problem keeps up.

thanks for the reply, so I guess I would have to update to the 93 to make this work

The HD audio tracks in MKV will still be a problem. You could convert to M2TS or AVCHD. The free tool tsMuxeR will do either. See the -93 FAQ linked in my signature.

To get mkv files to work on my 83, I split them into <1gb sections and then put them on a DVD (with my Mac, I use Toast>Data>Mac & PC). I get full quality and whatever sound is present on the files. Plays fine, but it jumps from section to section (1>2>3 etc) and there is that momentary pause/screen whilst it does so. When I tried using files larger than 1gb, the machine would play a section only and then I couldn't access any more of the file. Clunky, but it works.

Edit: MKVTools works on a Mac, is free but asks for $.

I could just rip them in M2TS I guess, then the audio will work?

thanks for the reply, now to figure out how to justify replacing the 83..... man tough one I love that player. Sounds like this may be the prefered method for me I I can get rid of my standard media player, the only hitch was the high def sound

Bill If I am reading this right then ripping to M2TS I can get the High Def sound but is that still only on A local drive or will it also work under DNLA media servers

M2TS/TS will work over the network.

Yes. Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD Master are supported in M2TS/TS files. Only MKV is restricted in this sense.
