My Oppo was working well until tonite. The player loads but BD gets stuck on the menu and Oppo will not respond to either remote or buttons on the player other than the stop button, so I am unable to watch past the introductory menu. I tried several BDs with same result. Any suggestions?

Try clearing out the persistent storage and power cycle the player. So far that has worked every time..... (you must remove the disc to perform this task...)

I've requested another disc from Netflix, but curious if anyone else has run into this problem too.

Quick update on this. I received a replacement disc from Netflix and it played fine on the latest official firmware (58-1215). I'm going to assume it was a disc issue, since I did not update firmware between the issues I experienced with the first disc and the replacement.

Our copy of Drive Netflix BluRay played without any problems on our 83.

In the past we have encountered several defective Netflix BluRays over the years. Replacement disks from Netflix of the same movie played great. In our case we believed that the particular disk was flawed. Incidentally, we always be sure to have the latest firmware installed.

does power-cycling clear the persistent storage? If not how does one clear the persistent storage?

Power cycling does not clear Persistent Storage.

Remove any disc or press Stop twice to completely stop playback. Then:

Setup > Device Setup > Persistent Storage > Erase

Note you will have to scroll down the list in Device Setup to see the Persistent Storage item.

There is some evidence, however, that a power cycle does help in some cases with erasing storage. It's best to do both.

Hello all,

I haven't set up DLNA and am using an external HDD with FAT32 to play digital media.
I have to split long files into pieces under 4Gb, while DVD's are already split, and my problem is that during every transition from piece to piece the subtitle and audio tracks get reset.
The only way out I have found is to specify the required audio/subtitles as default during muxing, but I don't want to remux just to do that.
Is there a way to have the BDP-83 keep those settings between files?

Anyone else experiencing this? I have an 83SE with the BluRayChip region-free mod. After installing the latest beta firmware, I have to reset the Oppo to factory defaults before I can change Blu-Ray regions.

This is unfortunately normal. When the player engages a new file, it resets to its defaults (Track 1 for Audio; no subtitles) so you will need to manually select the subtitles again if they are not forced by the MKV. If you require subtitles, I would recommend using DLNA as DLNA does not have any file size limitations or to remux the files (this is simply copying the file, so it should take little time to do it) with forced subtitles.

I'm getting near to setting-up my brand new in-box (nearly two year old) BDP-83 unit. Will this model auto-update firmware via-etherNET? Or do ?I have to burn latest firmware to a disc and update?

I'm sure this is explained in the manual and on OPPO's support web page.

The player does not update automatically. You can turn network update notification on or off and update over the network when you want to.

Or, you can burn a CD or copy files to a USB stick.

thanks Bill. I looked at your FAQ, answers my question.

I own each Oppo model now- BDP-83, BDP-93, BDP-95. So far got BDP-93 up-and-running, operates beautifully. Still working on setting-up two other systems for BDP-83 and BDP-95.

Thanks for the reply.
As I have read, a router is required for DLNA with BDP-83, but currenty I only have Airport Express, which means I will have to switch to a more serious (and wired) router before I can do DLNA.

My 83 was one of the early adopter models. It has performed to my expectations until a couple of weeks ago.

It started burping out DVDs and BDs and failing to load. I called OPPO and asked about repair options since it is 2 years out of warranty. They told me to ship it to them and they would fix it. I asked for a ball park price for repair and was told, "nothing".

So yesterday I dropped it off at UPS and today I just received a Fedex shipping notice along with an email from OPPO saying my OPPO was fixed and on its way home.

This is why I can't see myself buying any BD player other than OPPO.

Awesome! Try that with Lexicon.

Exceptional customer service!!!

I am an early BDP-83 adopter as well. NEVER had an issue, but it gives me a warm fuzzy that Oppo will be there if it ever does.

Thanks Oppo! As long as Oppo is there, they've got my business, and my referrals!

Yes, same happened to me. In the past, firmware updates had not affected region zone settings for me.
I initially thought the player was having a general disc read problem since the disc would start to load and then just stop. But another disc actually gave a region code error which clued me in to what was going on. After resetting the blu-ray region, all was well again.

I sent an email to BluRayChip.dk asking if they might have a solution or better workaround but have not received a reply (no surprise ). It looks like this will continue to be a problem. It means an added hassle every time I want to watch a Region B disc. Fortunately, I don't have a lot of them since most non-North American BDs seem to be region-free.

My symptoms are slightly different. When I try to play a B disc, I typically get the message about resuming from the last position when I load a disc, as if the player had seen the disc before (even though it hadn't), then it goes on to tell me that the disc region was incompatible.
^ Back some time ago, there was a report like this which turned out to be related to the conditions when the firmware was installed. If the region free hardware was set to anything other than the default for the player (Region 1 in the US) when you did the firmware install in the player, then there were problems.

The fix, in that case, was to Reset Factory Defaults in the player, set the Region Free mod to the player's default (e.g., Region 1), and then power cycle the player and re-install the firmware.

--------------------------------------

For folks using the region free mod that plugs into the back USB port, another reported fix was to remove that mod from the back port, Reset Factory Defaults, and re-install the player's firmware with that mod detached.

I've no way of knowing whether either of this supposed fixes will do the trick for you. Really, the people who made the mod have to support it. But I don't see that it can hurt to try these.

Not the case with me. I installed the firmware with the player set for Region 1/A and did the power cycle and all. I still have to go through the reset factory defaults procedure.
Is there a mod that you guys would actually recommend today?
I think these current mod annoyances may go away with future firmware changes. The current beta firmware was the first to affect the Blu-RayChip mod. The mod still works except that there is now a minor annoyance of having to go to factory reset and then renew your adjustments. Since the number of truly region-locked Blu-Rays is small, it is not really a deal killer for me. Playing of S-DVDs from various regions is not affected, by the way.

I can't comment on other mods since I have no experience with them.
