"Download and install the 59-0117B Firmware (http://oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-8...-59-0117b.aspx). Ensure that the BD Loader and MCU firmware install.

"Perform a Reset Factory Defaults (Device Setup), Erase BD-Video Data (Device Setup->Persistent Storage) and disable BD-Live (Network Setup).

"Disconnect all cables form the player. Bring the player to a surface (such as a table) which will allow the front panel to hang off the surface when the player is placed upside down.

"Connect a power cable and press Eject. When the tray ejects, remove the power cable.

"Turn the player right-side up.

"Reconnect the power cable. Eject the tray several times.

"If the tray still fails to eject, then the player will need to be returned for repair. Under this condition please respond with your shipping and contact information so we may have the player returned for repair servicing."

After trying the upside down procedure three times and the tray not ejecting, I placed the player right side up and gave the tray a gentle nudge UP with my thumbs (i.e. simulating the effect of gravity on the tray if it were upside down). It then opened. It has then opened 3 or 4 times while empty, and I am crossing my fingers it will continue to do so.

Thanks to Oppo for their quick response!!

I apologize if this information has already been posted, but a quick search did not turn it up.

Last fall I had a problem with the tray not ejecting, it would take 3-4+ tries to finally get it to open, either with button on the player or remote, and that's pretty much what Oppo emailed me. But they also said something about gently pulling the tray all the way out after it opened. I also couldn't get the tray to eject while the player was upside down. But I opened the tray while right side up, carefully pulled it out some more, and then turned it upside down and closed it, and then the tray opened & closed fine upside down. I haven't had any problems since doing that.

OPPO Service = Are You Kidding Me

I just received my 83 back after a 1 Day Turnaround. They changed the Front Panel due to a mark that I could not remove, Tray Door due to a scuff on the front bezel, Top Cover, Cleaned it, Upgraded the Firmware, New Bag, and a more flexible Power Cord for $79.00.

OPPO has a new Customer for life.

Yep, they fix 'em quick. However, they still haven't fixed the issue with 7.1 sound downgrading to 5.1 lossey on Kung Fu Panda 2 and other discs. Newest firmware (and the beta that preceded it), nada. First time they've disappointed me. Starting to think they are not going to fix it, as it's going on a year now (since the first disc surfaced with this issue) and all I've gotten from them is a nice note saying that they don't ignore problems.

Can someone confirm whether the Danish mod is now working properly or not. Thanks.

This is a platform issue, not an OPPO specific issue. They need MediaTek to resolve this in their SDK prior to implementing it in their firmware. If MediaTek does not want to resolve these issues (the hardware in the BDP-8x series is now two generations old) then OPPO really can't do anything about these errors.

Is that a piezo speaker on the top-right corner of the board? Does the boad acknowledge commands audibly?

I have a 971 and oppo 83. A dvd dual layer I made will play in the 971 but not the 83.

But then the dvd dual layer in the 971 will play sound with the HDMI unplugged in my pioneer sc27 and if I hook the HDMI back up, the pic will show but no sound. Now wtf.

Did you even read the instructions that are also in the ebay ad? If not, go back and read the instructions in the ad, the answer is there.

what program did you use to make the disc?

I use clonedvd for movies . I also use dvd-rs which work flawlessly with any player.Dvd+rs can have some compatibility problems but i am thinking your burn program and settings are at fault.

Is this an isolated thing or a regular occurrence with DLs? What brand of blank? What kind of burner?

I just got DVD cloner 9.20 and wanted to backup "Courageous" I've got the Blu ray on order from Ebay. I think I'll give the other programs a try and I agree, I think its got to be the DVD cloner copy setting somehow.

I don't regularly backup DVD's as I generally only watch Blu ray and I don't have a Blu ray burner. But the DVD DL disk I'm using are memorex. My DVD burner is (was) the top of the line from Maximum PC. Got to be something to do with settings.

Thanks for the interest in solving this.

FWIW, Memorex DL media can be from several different makers, and burn quality can be quite bad depending on the burner's support for each specific type. Suggest sticking with Verbatim DL blanks, particularly the 4x type.

Any time a burned disc plays in one machine and not another, burn quality might be to blame.

Also, don't always use the fastest burn rate. Slower is better, though it may take longer.

Arrggg, I take it the Kodak DVD DL disk I just ordered for cheap might not be a wise choice.

I mean dog gone DL disk are expensive. I found on wally world 50 disk for $28.24. And really, I'm just knocking off some VHS tapes for posterity. I'm playing around with the idea of seeing if the size really makes a difference. But capturing in Adobe Premiere and and then outputting same makes a large file.

I guess its' off to another forum.

Still strange the older Oppo plays and the newer one doesn't.

Thanks for all your input.

That's pretty much an understatement, I'm sorry to say. It's tempting to go for bargains (and I've done it plenty, usually with good results), but Kodak DLs are some of the poorest media out there. Out of the 50 in the spindle I bought well over 30% were bad, with the problem usually not being able to transition to the second layer when writing. In all the years I've been burning discs (with all brands from Verbatim on down), I've never experienced a fail rate anywhere close to this.

Ironically, the many Kodak BD-25s I've used never produced one coaster, which is why I gambled on the DLs. Now I won't even buy them any more.

Not strange at all. DVD optical drives and Blu-ray optical drives are different.

All of the writeable disc technologies are working on the periphery of specs intended for normal commercial discs. It's really no surprise that some of the writeable technologies that work with DVD drives have problems with Blu-ray drives. The SURPRISE is that so much of it actually DOES work.

Aside from the occasional sale at NewEgg, Rima is a good place to get decent prices every day. But $0.50 per disc is almost always going to be crap.

Obviously, I didn't, because I'm not in the market. (I bought the Danish mod long ago.) I just asked an idle question. Your post, though, had no point at all. Why so cranky--did you miss lunch?

Edit: According to gene9p, it does not. This contradicts the instructions.

Anyone else have trouble with a BB rental of Hanna? They've sent me two discs, neither worked well in my BDP-83 or an 80 I've tried. Both are on updated firmware and played other discs fine. Hanna just stutters/freezes at random times. Cleaning/wiping the disc didn't really help much... I'm waiting for a third disc from them...

Thanks

Interesting. My BB Hanna rental played fine on my 83SE back about 2 or 3 months ago.

For the best blank media - DVDs Taiyo Yuden/JVC silver thermal lacquer. For DLs Verbatim made in Singapore.

Life is too short to mess around with others.

Has anyone received a Region Free mod from bluraychip.dk that did not work?

I just received mine and it does not work. I spent an inordinate amount of time yesterday double checking everything to no avail. Tried the Remote also but nothing.

Bought the 93 and the Mod from bluraychip.dk, received it quickly, and it worked flawlessly.

Bought the 83 and the Mod took Weeks to get here in comparison to the 93 Mod. I e-mailed them as to why it was taking so long and I received a quick response from Casper.

If I do not hear back from them by tomorrow A.M. I will also be calling my Credit Card company.

Any suggestions of what to try before I call it in? OPPO refurbished the Player recently and Firmware 58-1215 is installed.

Make sure your remote and player are set to remote code #1, the mod won't work otherwise.

Yes, it will but you have to run a special procedure first. I have posted in this forum how to do it in the past. I have been running the mod with remote code 2 for a couple of years now.
