obsolete, but not to those who own the player!

I have yet to run into a video playback issue but I haven't watched Jurassic Park yet.

Do you know (or does anyone else reading this thread) if there are any known titles that don't play correctly with either PCM or bitstreaming? So far, I think I've only seen this issue with Brave, and I haven't tried it with PCM, but I'm curious if there are titles that don't playback correctly no matter which method is used.

Sort of good to hear.

I heard major crackling on the Carter disk and only on my Oppo.

I initially dismissed the possibility of a problem with the Oppo.

Any chance someone could list, or direct me to a list of disks with this problem?

So, if I understand this correctly, when the PLAYER decodes certain DTS-MA tracks, this problem may occur, BUT if the digital signal is sent to one's receiver via HDMI which then does the decoding, then there's no problem, right? Also, if one used the 7.1 analog outs from the player (with the player obviously doing the decoding) there might be a problem, as well, correct?
^ Right.

I've never actually heard the cracking sound myself because I always bitstream DTS. The only time I had to switch to PCM was for Total Recall (TrueHD dropouts on the new Sony version).

most likey. I beleive that I also had this problem as well. I remember having to send in the oppo 83 twice.. on two differnt reason. I dont remember the second time. the first time.I happen to visit oppo to get the new oppo 93. I took the new oppo 93 home and left the 83. I got the 83 back the next day.

I only had to send the oppo 93 in once. been working great ever since. I have had the 93 for 2 and half years.

Possibly. Try leaving a spare disc in the tray when you shutdown the player. It opens more easily when a disc is already loaded.

I had this happen several months ago for a while, and the tray got so tight (by the Oppo's sensing...) it wouldn't stay open sometimes too (would re-close once it opened enough to then bind). What I noticed was there is/was some slight OEM lubrication on the tray rails, and this got kind of clumpy with dust over the years. The case inside was pristine, so I'm *guessing* the dust is that thrown off the disc when spinning and whatever collects on the tray rails "naturally" from what little exposure it does have (I guess the fan would suck a bit in through the front tray "cracks"). I just cleaned with some isopropyl and put a very tiny bit of silicone grease on the tray rails. I assume I'll have to do this again periodically, because the dust will stick to the grease... Good luck.

AVFile: you asked about the Alliance Dredd. I had no problem with bitstreaming the DTS-HD MA 7.1 audio, and it is pretty good audio too IMO. I have had no bitstreaming 7.1 audio dropouts or crackling from any of the titles people have mentioned here (that I have). Except for this Alliance disc from .ca, all the others were from amazon.com so nothing special. Weird that some have fairly regular probs and others have none...different hardware revisions?? My 83 is from the "first" regularly distributed batch (i.e. not beta) if that's relevant.

anyone encounter weird drive noises when watching the Blue Underground blu ray of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage?
I checked 2 different copies, same issue.

Thank you.

The only really problematic disc I've got is the new Total Recall (Sony) but that is known to have audio problems on almost every player, even Sonys, when bitstreaming. I don't know how this could pass their testing! Of course switching to PCM allowed me to get through it, other than the fact I kept falling asleep wink.gif

I'm having problems with Game of Thrones, Season 2. Anybody else?

So far, both disc 1 and 2 are being problematic. Episodes of both discs are randomly freezing/pausing during playback.
The pauses only last a few seconds, and although pretty annoying, we still watched the whole episodes (netflix rentals).
There have been no scratches or apparent disc damage.

Reflashed the firmware (latest)... cleared storage... no help...

I emailed Oppo yesterday about the freezing/pausing. They've replied back and asked a couple of questions.

Tonight we tried to watch the second episode on the second disc (Garden of Bones... i think). The oppo really threw a fit.
We had a couple of 000000 lock-ups and playback was so awful we just gave up after a couple minutes.

No problems with any other software...

I would try cleaning the discs to be sure there isn't dirt, fingerprints or something else like that. Often little smudges that can cause exactly the problems you are seeing, aren't obvious in just looking at the discs.

If that doesn't fix it, I would contact Oppo again. They may want to find out if there is something about these discs that might require a firmware update to the Oppo. You should give them the UPC code for the disc set.

+1

My 83 sometimes will have problems opening when there is no disk in the player. It's never been a problem with a disk in the player.

Silly question. I bought my 83 about four / five months after Oppo released the player.

I have never done a firmware update on it.

Should I? And if so why?

I did a quick serach on how to do it and came up empty. Went back to page one and saw it in the FAQ.

Thanks,

Dan

I like to keep updated, but if you have no problems then updating is not urgent. You can check the first post in this thread for a history of firmware updates to see if any new features appeared.

If you have disc playback problems, particularly with new titles, then latest firmware is the first recommendation.

Thank Bill.

I found the FAQ when you were typing your response.

Funny thing is that I've never had a problem with this player (except door not wanting to open once and awhile) so I've never bothered to do an update.

I guess I'll go ahead and do an update and get caught up on the last four years.

Make sure that all 3 firmware files are up to date according to the latest release notes. Both the loader and MCU firmware should get updated as well as the main firmware.

To accomplish this you first need to install the 1215 firmware. Follow that with the install of the 0117 firmware.

You should wind up with this:
Main Version: BDP83-59-0117
Loader Version: BE2800 or BT0500
Sub Version: MCU83-27-0326

Oppo responded to me again, providing instructions to effectively "factory reset"...

unplug for an hour +
hold power button down for five seconds
re-flash firmware
clear storage
bd-live disable (always has been disabled)

All of which I did, prior to emailing them and posting my question here (except I didn't unplug for a full hour +).

They also instructed me to run a lens cleaning disc in the player. I've spent some time in the AV equipment world (spent a few years working at HI FI shops). I've never heard of anybody actually recommending to use those things (risk of scratching the lens by having something repeatedly flapping against it at high speed).

anyhoo...

What I'd really like to know, and I maybe Oppo would like to know too,
Quote:

This would help me determine if my personal player is actually problematic, or if there might be a compatibility issue.

It seems to be a compatibility issue, because...
Quote:

Especially since the only issues come from two discs of the same season of the same TV series.
And both of those two discs exhibit the exact same symptom.

I also told Oppo that I don't own these discs. I get them from,
Quote:
(netflix rentals)
Which means I don't have any UPC codes to provide to Oppo. And why it is strange that Oppo asked me if I might be able to send them in for compatibility testing.

Sorry if I come across as snarky, but I'm a little frustrated as nobody (here, Oppo, and other places) actually seems to read what I write. Even when what I write is as brief and concise as I can manage to make it.

Thread Starter
If the errors are only on the discs from a particularly series, then I would recommend having them replaced. If the other discs from Netflix produce the same errors, then have OPPO rent them so they can verify the errors. I have not had problems with my commercially purchased Game of Thrones S2 Blu-rays.

I had similar issues with a disc from season 1 that I got from Netflix, a replacement disc played without a problem. I also haven't had issues with any other discs I've tried to play.

Your original complaint pretty much describes a disc problem, and Netflix BD discs are well known for playback issues. There's no reason to assume your issue is anything more than that. HBO has never released separate retail and rental discs, so they should be the same as retail discs. So get Netflix to replace them and try again.

I actually think that is the best suggestion yet. Everything else is just grasping and stalling you.
Is it not a glass lens? That won't be scratched.

MYTH

Also true that none of the "lens cleaner" discs which are recommended for BD drives use brushes in the first place.

FYI, my BDP-83 (purchased in 09) developed this behavior a few months after the warranty ran out... Just lived with it until recently when it got to the point that it would only open about a 1/3rd of the way all the time... Finally contacted Oppo a few weeks ago and other than the cost of shipping it back to them they fixed this issue, cleaned the lens, etc. without charging me a thing. Nice to see a manufacturer acknowledge a common problem and provide a (almost) free fix for a player a couple of years out of warranty (where most would tell you to take a hike).
That's how Oppo is and why we who own their players love 'em. They may cost more to buy originally (though I think you get your money's worth) but the long-term ownership experience is probably less expensive than most of those $150 players that either won't be supported or can't be serviced as soon as a couple of years after purchase and you end up having to throw them away.

Same here they didn't care about the warranty or the region free mod.

They still did it for free.

I have just moved into our new house with network cabling & took the opportunuty to plug the oppo 83 in where it immediately has done a firmware upgrade. It was probably a year or so since i did the last one. One strange thing has happened. Photos that have a sub folder no longer play from the USB drive though photos without do. The same photos with a sub folder will play through the network on the machine. I have done a factory reset and erased persistant storage but no change. Go figure. Everything else is fine after nearly 4 years.
One or reasons I have never upgraded firmware. If its not broke, dont fix it.
