I'll try Neuromancer's suggestion and get back to you in an hour.

This could suck bad. I have a big movie night planned for tomorrow, with company coming over. Taken a few weeks to arrange and schedule. Crap! *crossing fingers*

Scott, maybe you can try this old trick from basic computer hardware troubleshooting. Open up the unit again on your anti-static workbench and ground yourself as usual. Pull out every connector from every board, one by one, plugging them back in immediately, simply to reseat the connectors in their sockets. Sometimes after disconnecting connectors and plugging them in some contacts may not properly re-establish themselves or some dust can creep inside a marginal contact and cause weird behavior. I've fixed some intermittent problems on computers this way. Best of luck my friend!

I tried re-seating the internal cable connections (in case thermal expansion had caused a bad connection) but that didn't help. Then, on a whim (I'm used to various electronics resets involving holding down a button while powering up a device), I tried holding in the power button while plugging in the power cord. Amazingly, the unit powered right back up! I've since power-cycled it many different ways including unplugging the power cord a few times, and it's been fine.

Undocumented reset feature? Did I discover something unknown to even the beta testers? Hehe. I'm just happy it's working again, phew!

I see I was a bit late in suggesting this method (while I was finishing reading other posts and writing your reply). Glad to hear you fixed it.

I don't think that it has anything to do with the mode of transmission. The "L" stands for linear, which means that the code values are directly proportional to the amplitude values, as opposed to having a logarithmic relationship, for example. Since this is almost always true, particularly with regard to music and soundtracks, the more general term PCM usually implies LPCM (the BDP-83's menus and manual somewhat confusingly use both) . A couple of common, everyday exceptions that I mentioned in an earlier post are the µ-law and A-law encodings used in telephone systems, which are actually 8-bit non-linear PCM; µ-law is also used in the old AU files that pretty much defined Unix audio back in the day.

LPCM (also known colloquially as PCM) can be placed in multimedia containers such as VOB (MPEG2 stream specific to DVDs), AVI, and MKV. The Unofficial OPPO BDP-83 FAQ implies that LPCM is supported in these and other supported containers, even though no lossless audio-only formats are currently supported, including those that contain uncompressed LPCM (e.g. WAV). It would be interesting to test whether this is actually true if such a test has not yet been done.

Actually, these are all examples of LPCM because of the linear relationship between the codes and amplitudes.

I've got an Onkyo 875 and a Samsung LED DLP RPTV. Any recommendations on the setting for SD DVDs? Should I rely on the Reon to upconvert or go with the Oppo? The TV accepts 24p from the 1400 and the Onkyo passes through 1080p signals unmolested.

I have the 905, I'd definitely recommend setting it to Through and the BDP-83 to Auto to allow the ABT VRS to work it's magic. My TV also accepts and displays 24p, and so I like to set that mode to Auto as well in the setup, and then turn 24p on for SD-DVD's. Play around with it each way.

I just received a EAP2 and ordered immediately. I guess some of the first 300 picked have decided not to order. I am glad the Oppo has quickly notified others.

When watching a DVD on PS3 I have noticed that it will always resume playing from the last point I stopped playing. However, if I want to restart the movie from the beginning I have to hit the chapter back button several times until I reach the beginning. Of course the longer I have been watch the movie the more times I have to hit the back button to restart it. In my older DVD player if I wanted to restart the movie I would hit [stop] twice. My question is, is it a simple process to restart a movie in the BDP-83?
Does it also show CDText on either the front of panel or on-screen when connected to a TV?

USPS Express Mail International is always expensive since they send the package airmail but you get it in 2 days instead of 6-7 by ground.

Another thing you have to keep in mind is the brokerage fee for the customs paperwork. For a value of $650 CDN ($500 USD + 30%), that should come up to about $50 CDN (using UPS's rates but Canada Post's rates are close). And don't forget our %5 GST and your 8% PST. It all adds up pretty fast. Too bad our dollar is no longer at par.

There was another way for us Canadians to circumvent this geographic restriction. That was to use a US based freight forwarding service and when registering with with Oppo, give them the address from the Freight company. Although you'd have to add the fee of that service. I only thought of this a few days ago; a little late to get the ball rolling.

Another Canuck left out in the cold

Hint: Never, never, never have stuff delived to Canada by UPS. They will charge you exorbitant brokerage fees and hold your shipment hostage until you pay.

If you ship by USPS, they will ship through Canada Post. Usually no brokerage fees and often no PST/GST. If the item is large (eg DVD player) you will have to go down to the post office to pick it up.

Learned this the hard way. Now, if a firm doesn't offer USPS I don't buy from them.

See the the online manual section "Playback from a Specific Location".

On DVDs you can simply use the "1" button. The YELLOW button will take you to chapter 1 of the longest title on the disc.

For Blu-ray you can use STOP + STOP + PLAY, but on discs with lots of BD-J you have to go through the whole startup again.

I would be inclined to use the Scene Access menu on the disc.

Worst, I was expecting a package from them yesterday. The guy didn't even get to my floor for me to take delivery of my package. He tried to get the security guy at the front desk to pay for it and then left. The package was address to me on the 4th floor!

I hate UPS. Never had any problem with fedex or purolator.

Guess I'll try the express sadness/regret and get selected method. "I sure wish I would be selected for the second round of EAP. I wasn't selected for the first round." I'll let you know if it works.

Northwesterner here! Also looking forward to true universal player. I haven't bought a bluray player yet specifically waiting for an Oppo player. I just placed an order for some bd's and added some to my sacd collection.

Thanks for the pointer to the manual. I had flipped through it before and obviously missed that section.

Oh, and you forgot USB in that list of yours....

I got an invite email around 6 pm last night and thought about it for 4 hrs or so and decided to go ahead and order a unit. It's interesting because I was about to close the deal on a Pioneer BDP-09FD...real close.

I don't own a BD movie but I did order a few this morning. I own a good amount of SACD material though and a decent amount of DVD-A so I hope the firmware will allow me to use the DVD-A's sooner than later. The big draw for the Oppo is the "chance" to have one player in the rack to cover SACD/DVD-A/DVD/BD playback. I use a 983 for video now and a modded 980 for SACD/DVD-A so I hope the 83 can replace them.

My hesitation in ordering is about doing business with Oppo. I'm still not fond of the way they did this whole EAP program; I just don't care for their marketing tactics.
I got my invite late last night, placed my order a few minutes ago. I hope OPPO keeps the (EAP price) 499.00 the same for those of us that signed up early and have spent many hours reading this thread. To those who have not been selected hang in there. More late invites to come!

Can't 'please all of the people all of the time' I suppose. I actually think Oppo's approach has been quite clever. You are apparently new to BluRay, but for those of us who have been with the format from day 1 it has been enormously frustrating to experience the 'lack of completeness' of the format. I don't even necessarily mean new features like BD-Live, just basic playability and speed. I've lost track of the number of times a disc has failed to play or taken 5 minutes to load - all because I was a firmware version behind.

So, if Oppo feels it necessary to wait until the player is stable and fully-featured before launch - and to verify this through a random EAP - more power to them. Better this than to launch yet another player that has problems out of the gate.

Just my 2 cents!

OSD for CDs and SACDs. Album name, artist and track title.
ca1ore has said it very well.

I can't help but wonder if the studios will ever get their part worked out as it seems that a lot of firmware updates have to do with failures on their part. I don't recall having this much trouble with DVD.

No, I just didn't believe it (BD) was ready for prime time and didn't feel like going through the bumps and hiccups you describe. I could live without it.

I have always used Oppo for my video needs...so I figured to wait and buy a BD player when they made one. Then came the wait without word, some email and phone exchanges and the EAP. I think i just got to know Oppo better and that soured me.

Its of no mind anymore. I bought, I'll try it and if it doesn't measure up, it will be gone. This is why you early or late adopt, eh? To see if it fits?

My other question is .... does anyone know if the alternate Oppo remote codes are available on the Logitech/Harmony web site as I will be running both Oppos in the system?

Styx - we have very similar systems. I also have the RX-V2700 with satellite box, XBOX 360, and Oppo DV-981HD. I lived in England for 2 years and have a number of PAL disks also, but I'm moving the 981 to another room. I have some PAL discs that WILL play on the BDP-983 so I plan to give the PAL to NTSC conversion a workout.

The 981 and BDP-83 operate on the same IR codes. I added the BDP-83 to my Harmony 1000. When I push the BDP-83 activity button it fires up the 981. All the codes work identically. As far as I can tell there are no alternative set of IR codes for multiple players. Even if there were, it is unlikely that the Harmony database would have them. Dish Network satellite boxes have the ability to change remote IR codes to avoid conflicts. But you MUST set the IR remote code to "1" (the default) for the Harmony to work.

There are millions of Dish boxes, yet Logitech hasn't enabled multiple remote codes for Dish. I wouldn't hold my breath that either Oppo or Harmony will support multiple IR codes for their DVD players.

The FAQ is still changing. Just this morning I added a note about CD-Text and a caution about losing settings.

Note that there is a time stamp at the top and a link to the Change Log section so readers can quickly see what's new.

You mean multiple codes in the OPPO remote? There is a 3-way switch in the battery compartment. Only position "1" is compatible with the other OPPO players. See the FAQ for syncing up the remote and player: Why did my remote stop working when I changed the code set?

Quote:

As shown in the manual (Installation / Remote Control / Setting the Remote Code) eject the tray (using the control on the player, since the remote is not working), point the remote at the player and press the Enter button for 5 seconds.

This will resynchronize the remote and the player. The setting of Setup -> Device Setup -> Remote Control Code will be changed to match the remote. A confirmation message will appear on the front panel.

Someone mentioned getting the other codes into the Harmony database, but I don't recall if this is done yet.

Hi Folks,
I received my invitation at ~8:30 EDT last night and wanted to place my order but noticed that Oppo has provided an option to select a 15 or 25 ft. HDMI cable. Does anybody know anything about these cables (type, brand, rating, etc. price). I'm holding to order until I get some info as I could use the 25 ft. cable.
