Bob,

The vibration seems to be a problem with certain discs. Why? I am sure that it is not the hardware as some have suggested. It seems to be the same discs over and over. This is most noticeable with this firmware and I can hear it from 8 feet away (my seating position).

Can you guys please check?

I don't have time to put the disc in, but the last three are most likely the subtitle tracks used when the English, French, or Spanish soundtracks are enabled and no subtitle is requested - they would contain the foreign language subtitles that crop up a few times when he's in captivity.

This raises the question of how do other players handle the same disc?

If other players don't have the vibration, wouldn't the conclusion be that the drives in the Oppo are lacking something?

Updated the FW without a hitch and DVD-As play just fine for me now. I even had no problem resuming from the last stop point. Still looking forward to the DTS-CD fix, but that's a minor nit for me now.

In the current firmware, I believe the update check will occur when the tray is ejected.

I updated via the internet and had the same glitch-free experience as several others have reported--about 2 min.

I tried a few DVD-As and they worked fine. I do not have any more vibration than any other player I own--maybe less. I am still looking for a HDCD to try.

I bitstream to a Pre-pro so I am not really a rigorous test for most of the problems and won't complain until we get around to arguing about whether LPCM has more jitter than bistream. That's when I stop reading the forum.

Just did my first firmware update with no problems. Very quick too via USB.

Now enjoying some DVD-A discs that would not work before.

One question, the help page for updating the firmware has a step #10 as follows...

>>Turn on the player after the firmware upgrade process is completed. Press the SETUP button on the remote control to enter the setup menu. Select Device Setup, Reset Factory Default, and then choose OK to reset the player settings. Enter your customized settings as necessary after resetting.<<

Does this NEED to be done? I did not do it and the firmware seems to have updated to the new version (and as mentioned DVD-A discs are now playing).

Thanks, Mike

I've done it both ways. Your current settings are retained during the firmware upgrade, which is convenient. But OPPO recommends during a reset to default so that is what I do now. I suppose the concern is that someday a firmware might be crazy enough to scramble your settings, so better safe than sorry. It hasn't happened recently, but it is certainly possible.

During the beta I was constanty checking and changing the settings, so doing a quick reset and restoring them manually is not a burden. It's good to review everything so you are aware of what settings you are actually using, avoiding misunderstandings.

Thanks for the info on resetting after the firmware update. I was hoping to avoid writing everything down and re-inputting it all after the update. So far so good, but I should write it all down at this point in case I need to re-input for any reason.

Thanks, Mike

As stated previously, I have the problem using either output. I've got the HDMI output set to bitstream, but also tried it in LPCM mode with the same result.

Edit: Based on other discussion, I'll have to double check what's happening in LPCM mode and report back.

Actually this brings up a minor point. I have the update notifications enabled, but did not receive a notice when I turned my BDP-83 on last evening. Since I knew an update was available, I went into the menus and told it to go fetch it.

This step promotes stability in the upgrade process. One step that is a very good idea but is omitted in the instruction is to power off the player after resetting defaults, and again after entering your custom settings. The power off cycle is when the player actually stores the settings.

I didn't eject the tray. The tray was, however, empty. I simply turned on the Oppo and the message about the new firmware popped up.

Sorry big thread. Please do report back your findings with regards to LPCM as that works fine on mine.

I don't recall ejecting the tray either to get the update message.

Brian

Did these questions/issues ever get addressed? I could not find an answer, but the tread is moving pretty quick.

I'm a little paranoid to do the upgrade until I hear back on this - I listen to a LOT more CD's than DVD-A's.

Seems like most of the issues have been resolved, and I really want to try this version soon (tonight if all goes well @ work)

Maybe OPPO changed the criteria from "open tray", to "empty tray" with this new firmware.

So it looks like the process is somewhat inconsistent. IMHO, it would be best to report the update when the player is turned on OR the disc drawer is opened (whichever comes first).

It seems that OPPO is not implementing the update notification with "power on" because people may want to RESUME a movie or music, and they may not want to deal with the fw upgrade at that time.
Doing it when the tray is open or empty almost assures there is no resume going on.

See this post otherwise just upgrade your FW as others have already.

What other CE manufacturer has supplied this level of detail pertaining to a firmware update. Oppo actually provides specific examples of what was fixed. I've never received a firmware update with this level of detail. PERIOD! Again, I'm thoroughly impressed. Others may have a different experience, but this is a 1st for me.

I believe the additional subtitle selections are only used if you turn on the commentary track.

You are talking about an SD-DVD disc, correct? Not a Blu-Ray?

Play the movie on that disc. While it is playing, press Stop once. You should return to the Oppo splash screen along with a message saying to press Play to resume. Try that -- i.e., press Play. Does it resume?

Now press Stop again -- you will get the same message.

Now power off the player -- leave the disc in the tray.

Now power up. If you have Auto Play turned on in Setup (i.e., play starts automatically when there is a disc in the tray) you should now get a message telling you to press Stop if you DON'T want the disc to resume play. Don't press Stop. Does the disc resume play?

NOTE: If you stop a disc by pressing Stop TWICE, the Oppo will discard the resume location from its memory. If you are using a programmable remote control, be sure to test this using the original Oppo remote in case there is an error in your programmable remote causing it to send Stop twice.

Ill try that but for me that seems to be a lot to go through. My old panasonic player you can just turn off and it remembers where you are. So now both my Oppos cant remember where it was unless you do some fatality type move with the remote. Guess that just means Im supposed to be watching a movie all the way through.

Yep, no restrictions. Maybe there is something Oppo has to set and hadn't until after I checked for it and manually updated. Besides, if you follow this thread, you are likely to know of an update before the player notifies you

Huh? Please re-read my post. What I described is precisely what you just stated your Panasonic does.

I was simply telling you how to test it step by step.
