So, let's say that OPPO does not received anymore votes by Sunday. Rescaled to represent the actual votes cast, there is a 80 percent approval rate for the release of the BDP-83 to the general public.

Now standing at 82.2% approval!

131 votes pending.

I would just like to ask what the opinion is of Oppo's customer service for their already released products.

Once this player is released to the public, can I expect Oppo to provide updates on a regular basis or will there be long delays between updates/upgrades like some other companies (that will remain nameless).

Just curious as to what to expect from Oppo in the future in regards to customer service.

Thanks,

Steve

Why don't HDMI connectors use the screws on the sides like DVI connectors? The screws were a bit of a pain when plugging and unplugging but they were a secure connection.

Steve, you can check out some of the OPPO DVD player threads (there's been the 971H, the 970HD, 981HD, 980H, and 983H) for first-hand accounts of OPPO's customer service if you want, but there's a lot there to read. The general opinion among folks who have owned their players, though, is that they are among the best in the business at supporting their players.

If you look at the first post in the 983H thread, it looks like there were 5 firmware updates in the first 6 months. It has slowed down since.

I believe Blu-ray players require a more aggressive firmware update schedule than DVD players, just to keep up with new security codes. This is part of the Blu-ray architecture and was planned from the outset.

OPPO generally updates their firmware once every 4 months, but has been known to make monthly releases in order to fix very important issues.

Ask this in the HDMI forum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forum...ysprune=&f=168

Most of what I have learned there are things I didn't want to know.

Reading the Oppo DVD player threads will tell you a lot.

If past experience is a guide, expect monthly firmware updates untill all desired features are fully implemented and bugs are squashed.

Oppo is famous for exchanging players they didn't really have to and simply amazing customer care. Post-warranty service is also exceptional and cheap.

I suspect I know what nameless CEM you're referencing...

Oppo's better than Samsung of course (i.e. 6 months between firmware updates to deliver essential features!).

Oppo 83 > Denon AVR-2809ci > Samsung LN52A750
(HDMI only audio and video bitstream to take advantage of newer HD audio on my Denon)

I am one of the EAP 350. This is my first posting as I have been waiting for someone to mention the lip-sync problems with 1080p/24 conversion for SD DVD HDMI bitstream set to ON, so I might see what their conclusions were, other than just turning it OFF. I had this on my Panasonic DMP-BD35 and it worked quite well. I know some people do not like this effect at all but I do, and it seems like more and more blu-ray discs are outputting 1080/24 so it seems the film industry likes this setting also. I have talked to Oppo on this since I first got the -83 and they are working on it. This only happens if you are using HDMI for audio and video. The new 0417 firmware did NOT solve this but Oppo is still working on it. The audio delay under the HDMI in the setup on the Oppo has NO effect on this to set delay - as an Oppo tech explained: by using the HDMI out for both audio and video, this is correct, because the Oppo is not processing the HDMI audio and the delay only works for analog (rca) connections. I am only posting this because I have found a work around until Oppo corrects this with further firmware updates. IF you have a receiver that has HDMI lip-sync audio delay settings (I have the Denon AVR-2809ci, but the 1909 and the 2309 also have this setting), you can select the input for your Oppo on the Denon and set lip-sync to ON and Audio Delay to 150ms and it corrects this lip-sync for 1080/24 SD DVD conversion. The tech from Oppo agreed with this as the delay setting is being applied after the Oppo. This work around does not effect blu-ray or CD delays or lip-sync thru this same input of the Denon as I have never had any problems with these, only SD DVD set to 1080/24 conversion. The Samsung LN52A750 is capable of 1080p/24 - in fact if you turn OFF Auto Motion Plus on the Samsung display it correctly refreshes 1080p/24 at 120HZ (per Samsung). I don't know if other HDMI AV receivers have this setting but you can check on your receiver.

I voted YES for release, as this player works with my HT system. I only posted this as someone in the EAP or someone in the near future may want to try this work around to use this feature with similar equipment as mine, until a future firmware fix. Or just leave this option to OFF.

Because they're crap.

I've been away from this thread for awhile, but it does amaze me that we seem to be no closer to a release date than we were months ago.

No one has told me the date, but I suspect we are considerably closer than we were months ago. As in Real Soon Now.

Cheer up, April 26 (voting deadline) isn't that far away.

I use the Oppo suplied HDMI and the lowest priced Monoprice HDMI cables. I spray the cable plugs with ProGold G5 Deoxit connector enhancer and have had zero problems since. This product is fantastic!! I use it on my Oppo 83, my Oppo 983, my Toshiba HD-XA2 and my Samsung DTS H260F tuner connected to my Marantz SR 8001. It has totally eliminated any dropout or handshake issues. I no linger have a drawer full of bad HDMI cables.

I would like to use the 1080/24 SD DVD conversion, but have it off, following this forum's advice. I thought the problem with SD DVD 24 fps lip-sync was that the lip sync error kept growing over time during a movie. Do I have that right?

yorkiepower, in the mode you are using, the Denon will be seeing 1080/24 whether you are watching an SD DVD or BR. How is it able to distinguish between the two to only apply the audio delay to the SD content? Does the HDMI handshaking include knowledge of SD/BR source?

I don't know the "about the growing over time, etc," I just know I had a problem and this is a work around on my system with my receiver and it fixes it so I can use 1080/24 SD DVD. I also do not know how the Denon sees the SD and the BR over the same cabel and input but it allows me to not have lip-sync problems with either and both formats are pleasantly watchable all the time.

Thank you all very much for providing your thoughts on Oppo product/customer support.

It sounds to me like I have a winner here, product and company wise.

We're done with the HDMI cable, etc. discussion. There's a whole forum here for it. Thanks.

With the latest firmware, you should be evaluating DVD synch again. You may find it's very good on your system. I know that Oppo wants feedback on this from EAP members, since every system is different.

This should do the same thing and is much cheaper.

If you had been reading whan I brought up Moulin Rouge You'd know.

So far they have not said they have done anything for that problem however that didn't stop me from trying after the first update and sure enough no change. Haven't had time to try after the second but since they did not mention it in their update I assume it has not been addressed in the updates.

Nope. Won't do it.

Wasn't referring to the company if that is what you thought. Just some of the posters here.

I would try Moulin Rouge again with 0417. With DD5.1 or DTS.

DVD-A is a niche market. CDs aren't.

Don't you mean almost a month ago, since the original release date was March if I'm not mistaken?
According to OPPO release date will be May 15, 2009. Oppo will go by the finale vote on 4/28/09 . As it stands now the unit will be released as they got 80% approval from the number of votes cast.

I realize that Blu-Ray discs have the ability to output at film rates, but what is it that you like about standard DVDs doing this? After all these years of watching DVDs at 60Hz rates, what should we like about forcing a "film-like" frame rate for them??? Since I've never had a player that can do this, and still waiting for the 83 to be introduced, I'd like to know how it affects the viewing of a movie.
With yesses at 180 (82.2% of respondents) and nos at 39(17.8%) we have reached a milestone. Only 65 more yesses will achieve 70% of the 350 in the EAP, but it will take 66 nos to reject release. Gosh, this is exciting! It's like watching a Presidential Election and waiting for the late states to come in.

I think the outcome is a no-brainer. It is just a question of when. If I were a TV network covering a National Election, I think I would have called it long before now. The next President of the United States will be ... the Oppo Bdp-83.
