Just ordered my speakers and reciever, now I need a SUB!

I just ordered:

4 C-300 Energy speakers
1 C-C50 Energy Center
2 C-100 Energy Speakers
Onkyo 706 Receiver

I'm not sure if I am going to just have a 5.1 with the 300's (and put the 100's in another room) or make a 7.1 setup. Now I have to decide on a sub, unfortunately my budget is kind of drained now, I'm looking around $200-$300 for a sub. Any ideas on what would go good with this setup? Thanks.

Here's one possiblity.

Here's another, just giving options although imo the STF2 croseiv linked is a much better choice at slightly over your budget.

I was actually looking at the F12. The HSU is nice but I dont think I can swing the price.
I meant to link to the STF-1 actually which is $299.

The F12 actually looks like it has better specs, and is around $200-$250 depending...

There's also parts express.

You may want to save up some more money and do that system justice.

Yeah, I have to agree here...

I've heard the STF-1 and Bic H-100 which is the previous version of the F12. Between those I'd go with the F12. If you must stay under $300 imo it's the way to go.

I actually just ordered the same setup, the Onkyo 706, and the energy speakers and am looking for a sub. I have been looking at the bic VK-12, the bic F12, the ED A2-300 among a few others. I am looking to stay in the $200-400 range does anyone have any others to look at or would recommend any of these over the others? haven't heard any and don't currently have a sub, so I am kind of at a loss, I appreciate the help, thanks!

How much more money are we talking? I would like to stay $200-$400 as sledder 69 said. So the F12 wouldnt do the system justice, not good enough of a sub? What about the VK12? Any other suggestions? Thanks

+1, or buy a used one for 300. A new one at 300 will not help the system out in the long run. You'll likely toss it after a year.

Ok, so how much should I be spending? Can I find a good sub for $300-$400? What is my best option for $250-$450? Thanks.

Keep in mind some of these guys are Bass heads and expect to have powerful bass you can feel but not hear. So if you want less you need a lesser sub. If you want this or tighter cleaner Bass you will need more sub. How much sub you need ultimately depends on the size of your room. If you in lets say an 8x8x8 room or a 20x10x10 room the amount of sub you are going to need will be different.

Quick layout of the basic price ranges for each tier of sub. This is not exact but between different manufacturers there are comparable subs in these price ranges. In general, each step up is significantly more sub if we are talking apples to apples (Internet direct vs Internet direct). And sometimes you can find deals which brings a higher tier sub down into a lower tier price bracket.

200-400
400-600
700-1000
1000-2000
2000+

If you are in a small room a 200-400 dollar sub will most likely be adequate. If you are in a larger room I would just hold off on the sub for a month or two save a few extra hundred dollars and go for a higher end sub in the 700-1k bracket.

Its difficult to say how big the room is because my living room (where tv and speakers are) is about 20x12 but this opens up to the kitchen and dining room seperated by a half wall. My ceilings are probably 16-18 feet at the peak and 10' at the walls.

This is my first real home theater set up and I already spent over double what I wanted to. I cant see spending $700 on a sub, now or a year from now. Will I be truly dissapointed in a $350 sub, say like the BIC F12 or the V12 Acoustimass. Any other subs in the $400 and under range that will do the job? Keep in mind before this I had a 10 year old 5.1 Sony setup...

Not pushing it one way or the other, but just pointing out that the HSU VTF2-MK3 is currently 10% off (in satin black) - click on the HSU ad at the top of the AVS page. That puts it at around $450, but the shipping is going to push that up to around $500. This is a tunable 12"in sub - check the HSU page for physical dimensions, reviews, etc.

I'll let others comment on whether they think this sub would be a significant improvement over the BIC 12in considering it would cost about 2X more.

Edit: The above may be incorrect. On second look, the $494 may be after the 10% discount, so the total would be more like $550 I guess.

I am really leaning towards ordering the VK-12 for $320 on Amazon this weekend...anyone want to talk me out of it? For the money seems like a pretty decent sub.

Well, I finally decided on the BIC VK-12 for my sub. System is finally complete:

4 Energy C-300's
2 Energy C-100's
1 Energy C-C50
BIC VK-12 Sub
Onkyo 706 Receiver
61" Samsung A750
PS3
Wii

I am going to wall mount the two 100's right next to each other about seven feet behind my couch and about 6-7 feet high. I am going to put two of the 300's on 24" stands (I know they are floor standing but I need more height) for the side surrounds. Then the three main in front with the sub in the corner. This is pretty close to what THX recommends for a 7.1 setup (except they recommend the sub under the center channel). I hope this will sound good, I am hoping to get it all set up next weekend (if everything comes in by then). I spent almost three times as much as I originally wante to but I think it will be worth it (I hope so!). Thanks everyone!

How did it all turn out? (Sound wise)
