True, but is that unique to Samsung? I see complaints from owners of Blu-ray players of all brands about funky behavior with specific titles. Maybe the 1600 line is worse than others. I honestly don't know.

But I do know that the technology is far from perfected the way DVD was when it was released.

You are correct there. That's why I asked enchntr to let me know what player he plans on getting next because I don't know a single standalone that doesn't have a funky behavior with some kind of disc. Even the Oppo has one and the Sony standalones.

It seems like the PS3 is the only one without any funky behavior and that's bad because many of us here at AVS love movies but are not gamers. Me being one of them.

Again...correct. If this continues, who knows if Blu-ray will even make it to mainstream. This would've been a stable format to begin with if they never had this BD-Java nonsense. That is what made the format more complex.

What is the most stable firmware so far? I already downloaded 2.05 from Samsung so I'll have it ready when the player arrives. It seems to be hit or miss with what is the most stable. Some here seem to feel 1.04, others 2.05, etc. Should I upgrade to 2.05 and just see how it goes from there?

Keep in mind that some folks contacted Samsung after having problems with
the firmware update, and were told that they should update the firmware
only if they were having problems - even though the player puts up
a nag screen every time you turn it on (assuming you're connected to the
Internet)

Although I think this was just an idiot customer support rep trying to talk
their way out of having to deal with the problem

But there are problems with older firmwares. For example, when I borrowed my friend's copy of "Watchmen"....Maximum Movie Mode only works with the 2.XX firmwares. Does not work with 1.03 or 1.04. On the other hand....there are some movies like the Disney Pixar ones that have issues with 2.XX but runs fine with 1.04. Problems no matter what you use. You'll just have to choose which problem you'll want to deal with. In my case, I'd rather deal with 1.04's problem because I only borrowed Watchmen..I don't own it and don't plan to.

And the Samsung rep is wrong. Blu-ray players must be up-to-date due to the everchanging specs.

So I see this player at 3 stores for $149 on Black Friday. Is the firmware such a huge issue that I shoudl not bother?
I saw a pallet of these at my local Fry's for $149 right now. The sales rep said they've been that price for awhile and that they're trying to clear them out.
Don't have a Frys in VA. My options are Best Buy, Radio Shack and Sears they all have it for $149 on BF.
I just backleveled from 2.05 to 1.03. Now my player works again. I tested with the latest movie ("Away We Go") I was having trouble with. I tested with the older firmware and the stuttering went away. I think the players have different chipset sets. I wonder if newer ones my have a faster processor. The problems for me seemed to show up after BB and YT were added. I wonder if older machines can't handle the overhead of the additional code needed for BB and YT.
Maybe I was being hard on Samsung. So, I have a question....

Do other standalones (Panasonic, Sony, LG, Oppo, etc) end up with issues after firmware update?
from what I have seen yes other players do have issues after fw updates.
Thank you, Ellpolo. I guess it's not just Samsung then. So buying another player of a different brand will probably not make a difference.
What kills me is the constant fallback to "well the ps3 plays it flawlessly" Of course it does if it didnt that would be really bad for sony since the ps3 is pretty much their flagship bd player (bluray is sonys creation). Not only that if you look back even the ps3had playback issues for awhile, especially the older ones. If sony couldnt get playback right on the ps3 it would be an epic fail and we are all outta luck for a firmware that would work.

I feel your pain. I have gone through three different Samsung Blu-ray players since they first came out and I have had so much grief with freeze-ups, etc. that I just couldn't stand it anymore & I went out a few months ago and bought the first non-samsung player I could find. Finally, no more freeze-ups & non-playable discs. Not one issue since I got the new player and I've had two firmware updates so far. In the past I just assumed that every player had issues. Boy was I wrong.
my freeze up issues keep on coming, i just bought the new star trek bd, and was watching it last night, and right after the big opening scene when they bring up the star trek logo and then young kirk is high tailing in the stolencar, it started stuttering, freexing, audio drop out, i stopped the movie went right back to the same spot and it did it again. i then turned off the player, restartedskipped to that chapter and it played fine, so im not sure if its a disc problem , or if my player is starting to crap out.

i took the same disc this morning put it into my 1500 in the bedroom pl;ayed it frmo the beginning and it played right through that spot no problems

although it took a lot longer to load in the 1500 than it did in the 1600, so long infact i almsot thought it wasnt going to load.

ive the latest firmware 2.05 in my 1600,

i donw graded to 2.4 the other day wghen i was having issue with Up and that didnt fix it, so i put 2.05 back on
im thinking come black friday there may be a new unit coming into the family
post #1575 of 3592
I had problems at the layer change for star trek (right when Vulcan is getting sucked into the singularity). I was running an older firmware, updated to the newest (dated 10/15) and it still happens. The disc doesn't look damaged.

Amazon has a coupon where if you buy "Up" with "Cars," you can get $15 off. I would like to jump at the deal, but would like to confirm if anyone has issues with both movies. Some have said they had freezing issues with "Up."

Does anyone have issues playing both movies on this player? Please indicate what firmware version you have. If you're using 1.04...that'll be most helpful to me since that's what I'm currently using.

I would like to place my order by tonight as I don't know when this deal expires. So, hopefully a few can answer today.

Thank you.

If anyone still has the 2.04 firmware for the XAA US Bd-p1600 player please post it to mediafire.com or megaupload.com and put a link up here. I really want to roll back to 2.04 from 2.05.

any one else having problems with the new star trek

i mentioned earlier i was having trouble at the beginnig if the movie the yesterdy, after a couple shut downs and restartes i got it to work

rhen tonight i started the movie at chapter 7 and it immediately started to get pixelated and distroterd, turned it off, then back on and started it again at chapter 7 and it layed fine for a few minutes where it justacted up the time beore, and then bam it acted up again.

i took out star trek, turned off then on again the player, started another movie and that plaeyd fione, took that out loaded up transforers 2 cause i knew that disc was fine, and it p;ayed well until i turned it off after 20 minutes

put star trek back in, with out restarting the player, launched chapter 7 and it played just fine for abuot 10 minutes thenstarted acting up again

i never hd problems like this until i got Up and Mnsters inc, those 2 movies act up as well,

so now i have three movies thatact up, 2 (up and MI) i know others with this player have had issues, but now with star trek i got to believe eiterh my player is going bad ir its a bad disc, but ifits a bad disc why would it work sometimes and not others?

can anyone tell me if they are having issues with star trek

im on 2.05 firmware,

1- Different settings....like one person's machine could be connected to internet while another's is offline.
2- Each person plays a different movie. And some people play a lot more movies than others. And some use their machine more often than others.
3- A couple of people could have a defective machine.
4- Some people are not being truthful. Not pointing fingers at anyone.

I have both the 3600 and 1600 and both get the same exact reaction/bug on each firmware I download.

There has to be diferences in hardware, chipsets, settings etc. that play into these issues. Most everyone here is experiencing playback and freezing issues.

My Bd-p1600 suffers from picture degradation on even the player menu screens with certain versions of the firmware. So far 2.05 and 1.04 give me digital "snow" and static lines. But 1.03 is crystal clear.

Does anyone have a link to usb versions of 2.03 or 2.04?
Snow and static lines are unusual. If your player is still new, exchange it.

I was cheered up today when my 1600 played my Netflix copy of "Drag Me To Hell" flawlessly. Based on several comments on various players, the Panasonic and older Samsung players struggle with this title. It's good that this particular player was able to play it ok especially since I have the old 1.04 firmware.

Hopefully, Samsung will be able to release a stable firmware in the future that works well with whatever hardware, chipset, etc people have. It's not that Samsung can't do it. It's actually due to the fact that they've been rushing the 2.XX firmwares. Firmwares 2.03, 2.04, and 2.05 came out extremely quickly. The 1.XX firmwares took a lot longer which leads me to believe that more testing was done with those....hence their stability.

It only shows up when I switch to 2.05 or 1.04.

When I go to 1.03 they go away. I've done it multiple times now with the same result. This is the second player that has done this after a firmware upgrade. My electrician switched out the first when it went bad during set up. (I'm sure it prompted him to upgrade the firmware and he did)

Samsung has been no help.

I'm just going to switch brands.

I notice with Firmware 1.03, the default resolution is 1080i. All the other firmwares have 1080p set by default. Maybe that could be it. Maybe your HDMI cable or TV is struggling with the 1080p resolution. If you decide to update the firmware again, try setting the resolution to 1080i and see if that clears the snow/static.

Good catch! I didn't think it was the cable because the DirecTV receiver picture looks fine. But now that you mention it it looks like the DirecTV is sending 1080i to the projector. The projector is an Optoma HD20 so it should be 1080p capable, but the hdmi cable might be the problem.

I'll switch to 2.05 and try it out on 1080i.

Edit: You win MrHT! 1080p was the problem the picture is fine in 1080i. Now why didn't Samsung or my HT company think of that, eh?
If you're 100% sure your projector is 1080p compatible...then I suggest you buy better quality HDMI cable at Monoprice.

I'm sorry for anyone that hasn't had a good experience with this player as mine has exceeded my modest expectations.

Netflix movies are great, and so far, of about 10 or so blu ray discs, nothing but seemless viewing.

I also really like Pandora.

My firmware is 2.05.

It could be that I'm not an advanced user, so I have encountered the problems such a person would find.

im on 2.05 firmware,

Yeah, I was trying to watch it the other day and I kept getting this ugly, annoying lens flare every few seconds.

Wait, what?

I did have a strange occurrence with a Disney standard DVD the other day. I put it in and tried to skip past the first of many title/production screens and my 1600 locked up. I had to turn it off and back on. It let me skip the first screen but the second screen came up all garbled and staticky. I'd never seen that before with any disc, and I'd played that exact disc several times before in that player.

I thought I was going to have to reboot again but when I skipped that screen it went to the menu and it looked fine. And the movie played fine after that.

Very strange.

Ah, Blu-ray. Every movie is an adventure!

Was this the first time you played it with the new firmware?

Go that right. I really want to jump at the “Up” and “Cars” $15 off deal at Amazon, but I’m scared of what kind of adventure I may have with those two titles. Hopefully, someone here can answer my above post before the deal expires.
Very odd... I'm on 2.04 and have yet to have a problem with any title (about 15 of them so far). Maybe some of it is in the setups? (Mine is very basic, just an HDMI cable into the Samsung LN46A550).

Up, Star Trek and Drag Me To Hell were all flawless. I don't use the streaming / internet features so I can't comment on that, but my Bluray playback has been perfect for every title.

Nope. The first time I played the disc was a week or so after upgrading to 2.05. It played flawlessly every time until the one I mentioned. It's Cinderella and my daughter watches that movie over and over. Heh.
