I'm sure that makes no sense since you're new to the 1600 and the forum. You missed the the period of time when Samsung was releasing firmware updates quicker than you could keep up with! If you've read backwards you've probably noticed different people prefer different versions. I prefer 2.04 because its the one that has worked the best for me. I can't remember for sure if there was a 1.0? that I didn't have Netflix problems but most of them I have. MrHT prefers 1.04 and I'm sure others like different ones too. There isn't really a right answer, which ever one works for you stick with it until you have a problem you can't live with.

I actually have the IP address for the auto updates blocked on my router so my 1600 can't update itself automatically. After the problems I've had in the past with updates I'd rather wait and see how it goes for others than have it happen automatically and find out first hand the next upgrade is worse than what I have at the time!

I am saying good bye to my 1600, returning it tomorrow as I am so dissapointed by the way it plays different file formats. I have been using my western digital media player and its performance is faultless in comparison. Will just use my ht-bd2 for amplifier and blue rays discs.

Tell me more about the Western Digital media player. I've seen them advertised but never really have checked them out.

I know it has Pandora, can you watch Netlfix with it?

Nevermind a little Google research answered my questions. It looks like a neat piece of equipment but since it doesn't do Netflix I'm not too interested yet.

Honestly if Roku would have had Pandora back when I purchased my 1600 I never would have purchased it. For $99 I could have gotten the Roku instead of $229 for the 1600 at the time and been just as happy. I had a Sony S350 blu ray player at the time but really wanted something that would play Pandora.

But now that the 1600 is selling so cheap I'd pick the 1600 over the Roku.
$229?? I bought my 1600 nine months ago when that model was still relatively new and got it for $150. Where did you buy it? "Best" Buy?

...and notice the quotes around "best."

Amazon is probably the best place to buy electronics, especially when they have sales.

Never heard of netflix or Pandora for that matter. Are they available in Australia and what are they?

Yes, as long as your receiver has digital inputs and the Blu-ray movie has 7.1 audio. The BD-p1600 does not have 7.1 analog out.

When I bought my bd-p1600 two weeks ago the price was $159. That was in the morning and by the evening the price shot up to $192 and since then I've see it floating all over the place. I would think that the price of the WIS09ABGN will be coming down again when fewer people buy at $80. $35 seems like the price it should be sold for if you compare it with other wireless dongles that Samsung makes and are sold by third party vendors.

MrHT, I don't doubt your price. I still remember seeing this post not long after I bought mine and thinking I missed the boat! I check the prices online before I purchase locally and usually Best Buy will match ("we aren't supposed to match online prices but...") but I still end up paying more since I've got to pay 6% tax on top of the price match. Like the poster above mentioned Amazon prices changes in pretty big swings and timing is everything and I guess mine wasn't good!

I like to purchase at Best Buy since its local. Sure the prices are usually not as good (even if they match because of tax) and the advice you get from the sales people is usually terrible but the return policy is pretty slack. I can try an item in my home and not have to deal with restocking fees or paying shipping to return it if it doesn't meet my needs.

Also If my player goes bad while under warranty or bricks updating it I'm not going to feel too guilty buying a new one and returning the the old one as the new one and tell the customer service person the problem with it so it gets sent back to the manufacturer instead of being sold as an open box item. A replacement unit in less than 24 hours after having a problem, maybe less than an hour depending what time it happens!

I know that sounds kind of shady but I came up with that evil plan after reading a few time on here about people who have sent their 1600s in and then after waiting a fair amount of time getting their 1600s back and then have them still not work or brick when they update them again!

I decided then that if my unit bricks I'm just buying another and returning it!
Maybe not very ethical but I'm sure Best Buy doesn't wait as long for a refund or replacement unit as the public waits for a replacement unit or theirs to be fixed!

I actually had a problem with Samsung's SlimFit Tube TV that I bought a few years ago. I bought it, it broke after a year of use, and was planning on doing that little sneaky swap that you just mentioned since Best Buy still had the TV in stock. However, I couldn't do it because I wasn't very smart and I registered my TV. When you register your product, you type your name, address, the date you purchased the item and the unique serial number located on the back of the TV. So, if I were to do that little swap, Best Buy would've sent the TV back to Samsung and they would've saw the registered serial number on the TV and know it was me.

So, my advice.....never register your product no matter how tempting or beneficial it may seem. The reason why they want you to register your product is so they can track it and make sure you don't do things like that. I learned my lesson the hard way.

I just purchased this player yesterday and I have two questions.

1) Is there a remote code for a Yamaha receiver?

2) Is there any way to access the player's menu without ejecting the disc? When I click the menu button that's to the top-left of the arrow keys, it says I can't do that.

I'm listening to Pandora and in the first second of every song it plays it makes a sound, or something. Some glitch on every song right when it starts. I've never noticed this before. Has anyone else?

Running 2.04

Does it ever end with the little quirks and problems?
I've seen a few people ask about the performance of the remote with this unit. I use a Harmony One remote so I never noticed until tonight how bad it is. I was making some changes on my Harmony setup so while it was loading I grabbed the original remote.

You have to have the remote pointed right at the unit or it doesn't work. Brand new batteries, etc. The Harmony One works great, so I know its the remote not the 1600 itself.

I turned mine off and disconnect the net wire, power it up while I see on my laptop the ping -t to see if it connects without timed out replay and it worked, will try again next time it fails with Netflix.

I'm curious what are you talking about? What were you having problems with?
I ask because I was just having problems with Netflix.

Just purchased a Samsung blu-ray (bd1600) and my DVD sound seems to be mostly (not completely) coming from my front speakers and subwoofer, very, very faint from my rear speakers. My TV sound is balanced perfectly as well as my last DVD player. Should I have to re-balance my sound just because I added this new blu-ray or have I not set something up correctly in the DVD audio setup?

Thanks for any help with this!
I would try a recalibration of your surround sound system. What kind of sound system is it? Is there any way of manually boosting the sound of the rear subs?
Just re read your post. You are saying this is from SD dvds and not BDs. I would try playing a BD first, and see how the sound is. This player decodes Dolby True HD so the sound quality should be very good.

I got my Dad a BD-P1600 for Christmas and we watched 3-4 Blu-Ray movies on it no problem. Well today he says he was trying to play some regular DVDs on it and ran into trouble with about 4 out of 5 of them. The first movie played halfway through then quit. The second movie played fine, then the next wouldn't load at all and the one after that would load to the menu and go no farther. Then the fifth wouldn't work at first, but started working after a power cycle; he just started that one so doesn't know if it's going to play through successfully yet. What's the deal? Defective unit? I did not update the firmware, but wouldn't think I'd need to for standard definition DVD playback. I asked him if the discs were dirty and he said they were spotless.

Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that the laser used for Blu-Ray and DVD discs are different, so one could be fine while the other not. If you're still within the return time, I would return it for a replacement. If not, I would check with Samsung for warranty service.

I can boost the sound of my rear speakers but I don't know if I can only do this for DVD playback or if it will effect TV playback as well (which sounds fine). My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V657.

Is it usual to have to recalibrate the entire sound system when you are just switching out a DVD playrer?

By chance does he have BD-Live turned on? If so, have him disable it.

I flashed back to 2.04 from 2.05 today, and still couldn't get past the first menu in "UP".

I then flashed back to 2.05 and disabled BD-Live and UP played fine. Something to tinker with for those having problems.

This player has been a big source of frustration for me. Looks and sounds great when it's happy w/the disc, but a PITA when it isn't.

Other discs I've had trouble with:
- "Spread"
- Polar express

I'm going to try the discs above later this evening to see if turning off BD-Live has solved all my problems. FWIW, I'm hardwired to ethernet.

I got a gift card to Sears for Xmas and I'm looking at buying a BD-P1600 because it is in my price range.

If I do are there some precautions I should take? Do I not want to update the firmware? Update it?

I have an Xbox 360 which I'd likely use to stream Netflix but it'd be nice to enable it on the P1600 at some point, but it's not a necessity. What else do I need to know to avoid the issues others have had here?

There's a link to the 2.04 USB version of the firmware a few pages back. Just download it, unzip it, and copy the unzipped file to a USB drive. then insert the USB into the 1600 (without a disc in it).
Maybe someone did write that before, but I want to clarify this because its very often googled and those pages show as one of top results.

BD-P1600 (imported from UK) DOES HAVE subtitle support for MKV.

The catch is that subtitle must end with SRT (SubRip format in the file) extension.

I tested this on my player, i changed txt (microdvd format), to srt and it worked like a charm, player did display subtitles and it didnt hang as before with other formats.

I just did the latest patch and mayby im just crazy but what ever was in the patch actually made my regular DVD's more crisp and cleaner ! So far no issues with the patch as of yet ...time will tell ! LOL

I'll have him try that, but I don't know why that would affect standard definition DVD playback. In the meantime, can anyone confirm that this player has an 80% failure rate at playing regular DVDs, or am I dealing with a defective unit? I need to know if I should have it replaced with another BD-P1600 or opt for a different brand if possible. Thanks.

I've played quite a few BDs and DVDs on mine so far, and never had a single issue.

I ordered a BD-p1600 despite lots of negative comments. Mostly I wanted the NetFlix feature and occasional DVDs - both kinds.
My old DVD player didn't upconvert, but the 650 says it does it itself and standard DVDs seemed OK. Is there some kind of conflict here, or is that good?
Still reading about all the firmware problems.
