It also won't freeze again on the same play after the initial freeze. However, if the movie is left alone to play freely it will freeze everytime.

What if you go through the menu and select the chapter where the skip is as soon as you put in the disc? I'm just wondering if I have to sit and watch the movie all the way to properly test it.

Once I test it I'll let you know the results.

If I do decide to replace it, I may decide to get the PS3 (which I find to be insanely expensive) or the Sony BDP-S360.

well if samsung ever does update the firmware and i am able to confirm that it fizes my issues, then i will use it as an emergeny back up if one of my other two units crap out

thats my plan anyway, but samsung hasnt updated the firmware since halloween, and my were with movies, like Up and Monsters inc that came out after that. Also those are movie my daughter likes to watch so i had to do something so she could watch them, instead of always sending her to our room to watch them on the 1500 unit i have by samsung,

If you go directly to the chapter in the garbage heap, it will play for about a minute as EVE reboots and then it freezes on the panning shot of the garbage heaps. I've noticed that if I go to a different chapter then it may not freeze when I return to this chapter. It's a very weird issue. I've let the movie play through 3 times from the beginning as well and it froze everytime at this point around the 1:12 mark.

It won’t be such a total loss because at least I can use the PS3 for games and the Samsung 1600 for movies that it works ok with. But my only beef is that the PS3 is $300. I find that to be a lot of money. But with the gift card, I’m getting $100 off, so I guess it could be worse. And not to mention that I’m not a big gamer as well. But I can always find a few games out there that may interest me.

i dont know much about the PS3 so i cant help ya there, but i can say look at other options, i have seen people complain about the PS3 as well. I bought a best buy insignia player, the wireless model, it was on sale, and it blows away the 1600, the picture quality is better, i havent encountered any disc yet that wont play, i have had it only since thanksgiving so i dont know how the longevity of it or durablitlity of it, but do some other reseasrch, look at other threads, you might could save money and get a player to fit yur needs, i originally went with an LG but after week, i noticed some bad lip sync issues and exhanged it for the insignia,

my wife who is not a videophile says the difference between the insignia( i think the insignia is a copy of an lg) and the samsung as far as picture quality.

but like i said research, if you want the PS3 go for it, but look at other players, plus in a couple months all the 2010 players shold be coming out and there looks to be some goodunits from all makers coming out

You’re right. I’ll use my BD-P1600 until it’s rendered useless. I can’t take a chance with the PS3 because not only am I not a big gamer, but if I run into the slightest issue, I’m going to hang myself since I spent so much money on it. At least, the BD-P1600 was less than half the price. What I did is re-order my movies at Amazon and use my money on those. Heh! My life is like yo-yo now. I can’t believe a reputable brand like Samsung would make a complete mess like this. When my player breaks, I’m getting a Sony player. Call me a Sony fanboy or whatever you want, but I’ve never had this kind of a mess with Sony products and I own a ton of their electronics.

I didn't have time to watch the whole movie tonight, but I put in the disc, went to the menu and selected the garbage chapter (which starts at about 1:11 with the word "Reboot" on the screen). I let it play for about 4 minutes to just past the 1:15 mark and it worked just fine -- no pauses.

I'll have to try to watch it straight through soon to see if the results are any different. If I can I'll post the results.

Again, by way of comparison my 1600 settings are HDMI input to Samsung TV (with Anynet+ enabled), TOS to audio receiver, re-encode audio mode, BD-Live enabled (with thumb drive in back), firmware 2.05.

Hmm. Maybe that's why? We have completely different settings. I wonder if that's what causes the different results. These are mine:
-Aynet= off
-Optical
-Bitstream (audiophile)
-BD-Live disabled
-No thumb drive on back nor front
-Currently on 1.04 after having headaches with 2.XX.

I'm still trying out my 1600... mixed results and have only watched a couple BluRay's so far. Want to keep it but have had issues Blu Ray's "freezing" (Angels & Demons).

Any reason why you're not using the Anynet feature?
I don't need it. Have no problem switching sources manually...
I disabled my Anynet when I first connected my player because I had read that it could cause strange problems such as HDMI handshake issues, but I finally gave it a shot and I love it. It's so nice to be able to simply turn on my 1600 and have the TV come on along with it and automatically switch to the proper HDMI input.

I wouldn't be surprised. There are so many variables and it seems like any one of them can cause strange things to happen.

Is anyone having Pandora problems?

I'm back to 2.04 and in the first second of every song there is a silence or static and then the song plays fine. I can leave it play for hours so it isn't doing the play a few songs and locking up.

I find that family films from Netflix have a thick residue of "sticky kid" on them and I invariably end up having to clean them -- DVDs as well, though it seems to cause me more trouble with BD.

Some of the kid BDs like "Ratatouille" are mine. I watch them, not kids, lol. I watch anything. No kids have handled any of my BDs.

I had audio issues when using audiophile on optical, i switched to re-encode and have been trouble free since. I don't have BD-live enabled and was using 2.04 with no issues. I took a gamble and updated to 2.05 a couple weeks ago and still have no problems.

Seems this is a finicky player. Luckily my problems were minor and plays fine now.

Same here. Audiophile worked most of the time but it gave me fits with a few discs. Re-encode has been working great for me.
I never had problems with audiophile.

Ha, don't get me wrong, we (kidless) own Ratatouille, Up and some others! But there goes my "blaming it on sticky kids" excuse for your playback issues.

I can't chime in on how they play on the 1600 since we've watched most of them on our 25x0. Up had the freeze issues others have reported.
I don't have anything other than the hdmi to tv attached to my 1600. I have 24fp on and audio set to pcm and have not had any issues with the 20+ bd's that we have except for "harry potter and the hbp". Tried firmwares 1.04, 2.04 and 2.05.

I use HDMI attached to a Yamaha AVR, what is everyone else using?
Sounds like a lot of optical users out there.

-Aynet= off
-HDMI
-Bitstream (audiophile)
-BD-Live disabled
-No thumb drive on back or front
-Firmware 2.04

Anyone else using Pandora?

I use Pandora all the time. I love it. I'm still on the original firmware that came with the machine, though. I've been waiting for a good reason to upgrade and haven't found it yet.

Just a followup on the grinding noise discussion a while ago.... I went to PC Richards today and saw the 1600 on display. It was plugged in so I turned it on and it made the same grinding noise as my player. So I know that sound is normal. The grinding noise only occurs when you turn on the player. Just press "power" then you should hear... *grind* *grind* and then the player starts loading.... If some people don't hear that sound the minute they turn on their unit, then maybe Samsung made certain batches differently.

What firmware are you using?

Do you hear something in the first second of every song (or almost every song, after a while I just ignore it)
Just curious....is the 1600 internet connection always sending or receiving packets?

Noticed on the Rosewill wireless dongle that it appears to be transferring data at all times.

To those of you not having issues...what are your other settings for audio in the 1600"s menu? I see many of you are using reincode but what are you using for "pcm downsampling", "dynamic compression" and "downmixing mode"

I use Pandora at work (via PC) and home (via Sonos) and love it. I have only listened to it briefly on my 25x0 Samsung and haven't set it up yet (registered it) on the 1600 since it is only attached to my TVs speakers.

I have the higher bit rate paid subscription, which I highly recommend if you listen over a decent sound system.

I'm sending mine to TV speakers over hdmi as pcm stereo.

Dynamic compression = off
PCM downsampling = off

Edit-I have the latest firmware (2.05?) installed.

Ok….. I have also rented that same movie, except the disc was clearly marked as a “Rental” version. So, all you get is the previews and movie. Was watching this last night with Firmware 1.04 and got a 1 second pause at the 1 hr 21 min mark. It paused, then continued a few seconds later. If I rewind and play it, it’s ok. But if I rewatch that entire chapter again, the pause will occur at that same spot.

Sigh! This player always has some new adventure in store for me. What I'm going to have to do is try installing Firmware 2.04 again and tinker with some of my settings and see if I can get this player to work ok. Better yet, I’m going to start a new post right after this and ask a couple of questions. Then maybe we can get to the bottom of why certain people are having issues are others aren’t….
